“Yeah, well, if there’s one thing I love, it’s not meeting expectations,” Yang says wryly. “Besides, I’m not the only one who’s recovered from something over the past four years."
“You heard about all that?” Blake says. The breakup—and the ensuing legal battle—had only made the news because of who her parents are. Otherwise, nobody would’ve cared about who Menagerie’s bronze medalist gymnast broke up with. No one, apparently, except Yang.
“I kept up with things,” Yang says. “I’m happy for you, too. You look happier without him.”

“What are you smiling about?” Ilia says as Blake reenters the living room.
“Percy was up reading,” Blake says. She holds up the book. “Fourth grade reading level.” Ilia whistles quietly.
“He’s gonna blow all the other kindergarteners out of the water in the fall,” she says. Blake’s smile turns into a grin.
“It’s not a competition,” she murmurs, despite the pride blooming in her chest.
“Too bad, because he’d win,” Ilia says. “But listen, we can talk about how cool your kid is any time. I wanna hear about this new friend of yours." Blake’s smile takes on an altogether different tone.
“Her name is Yang,” Blake says. “She’s…” Blake doesn’t even know where to start.
“You slept with her?”
Well, okay, they can start there.

“And you called your wife over here,” Weiss says. “To—what? To see if I would keep your secret? Well, I won’t.” Of all the people for Yang to try this on, Weiss is possibly the most wrong. Not with her childhood. Not ever.

“Here, it’s just so cold and damp and…I like the sun. I like being warm.” She turns to look at Yang. Yang is looking down at her with a look that Blake can’t parse. Curiosity is certainly in there, and what looks to Blake like sadness.
And something is different, too. Something is very different.
“Your eyes,” Blake says. Yang blinks at her.
“My eyes?” she repeats.
“Yeah,” Blake says, frowning. “They were red a second ago. Now they’re purple.”
“Weird,” Yang says cheerfully. “Must be the fluorescents.”
(Blake, fleeing an abusive relationship and the memory of a night that she doesn't fully understand yet, decides to spend her last year of high school on the tiny, rainy island of Patch, living with her parents' old friend Sienna. There, she meets Yang Xiao Long, and starts to ask questions she might not want the answers to.)

“Nineteen,” Yang says. Blake nods, the confusion on her face disappearing. She reaches out with one hand and lays it atop Yang’s prosthetic. Gently, she guides Yang’s hand down so that there isn’t a gun in her face anymore. Yang doesn’t fight her. “How old are you?” Yang asks. Blake sighs, shakes her head, half-smiles.
“Thirty-two."

“Not all of them,” Beatrice says. “That’s not how it works. We can’t save everyone, Ava. No one can. But some of them, yes. You can stop some of this if you work with me.”
(Ava is the first Slayer in history to be raised from the dead by her calling. Beatrice is the youngest Watcher in history to be assigned full-time to a Slayer. It's just her luck that this particular Slayer wants absolutely nothing to do with her own destiny.)

“Saturday,” Ilia says. Weiss walks out of the coffee shop without another word or a backwards glance. Ilia checks the window out the front door—there’s no one even approaching the shop—and then turns, leaning back against the counter and sighing deeply. Part of her is upset that Blake hadn’t mentioned her to Weiss. Part of her is upset that Blake hadn’t mentioned Weiss to her.
Part of her is still in high school and noticing that Weiss has only gotten more attractive in the past most-of-a-decade. Not that high school Ilia ever paid attention to how attractive Weiss was, of course; it was just…hard not to notice. And it still is, it’s only gotten more so. Ilia has never seen a sharper jawline in her life.
(Blake and Yang are getting married. Weiss and Ilia bond over being the ones left behind.)
