Klavier stared through the window in silence. In that silence, Simon could hear his reprisals of the past.
Unattainable approval. Standards never to be met. A throne of lies that he had been too naïve to see Kristoph’s manicured hands construct, even as his own—scarred from guitars and stained with ink—followed in their act, desperate for cheers and applause as they used the tools forged before them. And all of it, he had done with an eager, show-stopping smile.
Klavier did not smile now. He only continued to stare with a severity that hardened his eyes and cast stark shadows upon his features.
Kristoph Gavin stared back. A smile pulled at his lips. It did not fit among the gaunt features of his countenance, his eyes shadowed by hollows, his cheeks sunken into the bone beneath; but then, none of his physical appearance corresponded with his demeanor. He lifted his head, just barely, pale hair streaming down in a perfect, precise curl onto the gurney whose straps bound him. Then his voice crackled over the speakers. “My, my, what a surprise… It’s been four years too many,” he said, “Klavier.”

The tape recorder clicks to life, the button sinking into its slot with a satisfying shunk. The tape inside spins, curling its way from one spool to another as he sits there, breathing as quietly as he can. Not that there was anyone to hear him, exactly, anyone with half a social life at all had left the office long before he had, but… here he stood, coat over the back of his chair, hair in his eyes, elbows planted on the table.
Better start the recording somewhere, right?
“Audio log,” his voice crackled up out of his throat, the first words he’d spoken in hours, “Eighth of February, 2028. About nine in the evening. Simon Blackquill recording.”

Phoenix’s heart is pounding when Edgeworth lifts his hand, but then he hesitates. In that moment of pause, Phoenix sees years of pressure weighing him down. Miles cried over folding a bad paper crane when he still had the father he idolized to tell him it was okay. Then he was fighting to be good enough in every aspect of his life, not even to be accepted, but to avoid being rebuked.
It’s okay, Phoenix wants to say. Not as a platitude but an assertion. They’re not going to be very good dancers and that’s okay.
Phoenix shoves past his own fear, past that nagging voice telling him to accept rejection. If he puts himself out there to be judged, silly and trivial as his fears may be, then maybe he’ll show Edgeworth how to do that too.
