There’s a gust of wind that kicks up dust on the sides of the road and whips through Grace’s hair. She scans around, as if air could contain a threat, and in doing so notices Sarah’s observation. Eyes bluer than the sky that’s open all around them. Frozen thunderstorm. Sarah gets a prickle down her spine.
Neither moves.
They’re waiting, Sarah knows, to find out who’ll be the first to blink.

Every goddamn sign post, every tumbleweed bouncing along side of the interstate, every saguaro or broken down sedan or sky-high gas price you pass, somehow meanders its way back down a path to Lightning McQueen, so even when you’re trying not to look at her, you end up conjuring her up in your mind’s eye. When she’s content to work-work-work to save humanity and not think about herself, or her needs, or whether or not she gets any kind of emotional payoff from everything that’s happened. But...then she’ll hear a voice that sounds familiar, or see a flash of blonde hair, and a crack will appear in her emotional armour, reminding her that she can try and pretend, but deep down she knows...she’s never quite going to stop waiting.

Summary
“Grace,” Dani puts her hand on Grace’s. “Can I have this?” She asks. Grace’s features tighten briefly with confusion. Dani doesn’t know how to ask for this.
It’s not a nice or kind heat, inside her. It’s desperate and feels like someone, something, has ripped away a layer between her and the world. But Grace makes her feel like it’s okay to feel it.
And it feels like Grace would understand.
Or, Grace gives away her feelings while they’re at Carl’s house, and Dani has questions. Grace is tired of not being able to answer.
(Some minor canon-divergence. Also, jumps right in there.)
