It’s fate, really.
She hasn’t seen him in twenty-six years, since her own wedding where he stood as the Best Man. He’s been married and divorced since then, his ex-wife Aly tossing her satin dress-clad legs over Baela’s lap as they pass a bottle of wine back and forth. There was an ex-fiancee as well, Aly’s mouth dripping with gossip and rumor about her, about how Rickon wasn’t a fan and naturally, she had to go. Baela doesn’t bother remembering her name between sips, caught up in giggles that shake them both.
The bride and groom are long gone, as are most of the guests, but still they linger. They drink together until he finds them, rolling his eyes at the way Aly catcalls him, kicking her feet at him as he fetches her discarded heels.
See, Aly says, lipstick half-gone, smeared on her pretty teeth, I have him well trained.

She freezes mid-sentence, halfway through a call me right now and doesn’t know what to do until her numb fingers manage to open the groupchat instead and send one frantic, numb, help me, into it. Sending it straight to Jace’s phone, where she can’t even begin to process the fact that it will go unanswered, and to Cregan’s because nearly eighteen years ago he sent the same text in the middle of the night when Arra was dying on the table and Baela knows now without a doubt that he will find her. Just like they found him.
Baela needs him here because he loves Jace too, because he loves her kids, because she knows that he’ll set his grief aside to protect them and care for them while she doesn’t have the strength to do it herself. She needs him here to tell her the truth, because it’s still not real, it's still not possible, it can’t be possible.

There was a moment of frozen silence before Baela’s hand clamped around his wrist, wrenching it away even as she cried out in pain from the pull on her injured jaw, and he let her move him away. Her wrist was so frail next to his that he feared that stopping her movement might snap it in two.
“You’re not my father,” She said, “and you’re not my husband. You have no authority over me, not here, not anywhere.”
She stepped further into his space, nearly chest to chest.
“And you don’t know what he would have wanted for me. You didn’t know him. I know him. I’m the only one left that knows him and no sharing of blood beneath a heart tree will ever give you the right to speak for him.”
“If he loved you, which he did, he would want you to live as any man who loves would.”
Baela’s eyes were shiny with tears, with rage, with hatred.
“If he loved me, he would have married me when I asked.” She stepped back, “but he didn’t. And now he never will.”

Makkari settles her cheek on her knees, her hair falling to curl around her arm, the front held back by a braided circlet. It's so black, so dark that she most likely would've disappeared into the ink of the night without the tender light. He does the same, mirroring her form so that he's still in her level of sight.
"It got old," he finishes. She doesn't push him, just nods and reaches out to squeeze a bit of his cheek with the tips of her fingers. It's such an odd thing to do to someone she didn't really know.
He smiles at it, reaches out, and does the same. She resists the urge to cry like a child.
