    Summary

The ball was, of course, very lovely, very charming, quite spectacular. Oscar was enjoying himself, he was sure, immensely; that he couldn't quite feel it was only a trick of something, the light, or his heart, or the champagne.

    Bookmarker's Notes

He felt quite dumb, holding each word up to the light, like a possibly-counterfeited coin, before he said it. Is this the one that would give him away? Is this? But he remembered himself enough to say, if a bit stiffly, "He would've wanted you there."

And he would've. John had disliked Gladys enormously, at first, just because Oscar had liked her, just because John couldn't see—But after he'd used her to torment Oscar at Newport over that strange, years-ago week-end, he had seemed to grow some kind of real fondness for her, as if to make up for the strange burst of vindictive charm he'd unleashed against her. Oscar wasn't sure Gladys had ever known the difference, between John's false charm and the real. Oscar had never been entirely sure anyone really understood John. He certainly hadn't. The will, his sister—all that had only made him surer. He hadn't understood John at all.

The trouble is, Guy can hear them, all over the abbey.

One in particular is occupying his room.

    Bookmarker's Notes

No, real ghosts made themselves known. They liked their own people, cozy and familiar places. Downton Abbey had too much space, too many personal histories no one cared to remember. No true ghosts would ever linger on those freezing balconies or haunt the secret passages. What people felt in those places was their own inevitable death, nothing more.

For the kinkmeme, prompt is: "Combeferre/René Laennec - Because, hey, it's totally plausible that 19/20-year-old Combeferre could've studied at Collège de France under this professor, right?"

    RIGHT.

In execution: Combeferre's friends piss him off and he almost explores other options, but then doesn't.
