Summary
From the very beginning, through thick and thin, Mulder and Scully have been there for each other, have had each other’s back, and have gone to hell and back for each other. Best friends who care for each other, who would die for each other, who would live for each other. Across all lifetimes, always, Mulder has loved Scully and Scully has loved Mulder.
But, childhood trauma is a real bitch, ain’t she? All the years of being blamed and ignored and cast aside after Samantha’s abduction have taken their toll and Mulder still has trouble fully believing that he’s worthy of being cared for and loved.
Scully helps him realize otherwise.

But he’s loved her for years and here they are. Tentatively, timidly, his soul is still reaching for hers, asking it to soothe old hurts and pain. Umbrellas and newspapers rose into the air, swelling into a black black and gray river down Museum Mile. And there they were in the middle, huddling cold and wet with nothing to show for it but each other. Joy to you and me.
“It’s just a bit of rain,” Scully teased, eyes aglow. As if it were a separate thought, she added, “I’m not going to die.”
I’m not going to die, she says! And she sounded so sure, too, that she may as well have said never. What he wouldn’t have given.It never does rain sleeping bags; Mulder counts himself lucky all the same.

When Dana Scully arrived in their basement office at 8 AM on the dot and Mulder wasn’t already there, waiting for her with a new case or some ridiculous slideshow, it was unusual, but not unprecedented. She figured he was probably just out getting coffee.
By 8:30, she was a little concerned but not overly so. Maybe he just overslept for once.
By 9, she had called his home phone three times and his cell twice. No answer. She was trying not to look like she was waiting by the phone for a call back.
When the clock hit 9:30 she was out the door and in her car, driving to Mulder’s apartment, trying and failing to resist going just a little over the speed limit.

Scully watched as Mulder closed his eyes and breathed in the sound of their son. She was reminded of that night three years ago when his journey to find Samantha had finally ended and he’d looked up at the sky and told her that he was free. That was how he looked now: happy and free. Mulder opened his eyes and smiled at her and she knew they’d be okay.
The anniversary of Samantha's disappearance in 2002 brings chaos, stress, fights, guilt and ultimately some pretty sickening young family fluff.
