    Summary

“you must love him a great deal,” ty lee whispers and it echoes in the haunting empty of their shared cell.

    “what do you mean?”

“you’re afraid of azula, yet you betrayed her so he could escape,” ty lee says, not whispering but still very quiet and plain. not at all like her usual tone. “so you must love him a great deal.”

    Summary

“You’ve been getting better at this,” Katara says, casually.

“I mean,” Sokka says, suddenly self-conscious. “It’s not my best work, but—”

“Sokka,” Katara cuts him off, rudely, and so he shuts up. “I love it.”

    “Thanks,” Sokka chuckles.

Katara looks out the window, where the stormy weather has calmed down a little, and back at the drawing. As she traces it with a single finger, she notices a strange texture. “What did you make this with, again?” she asks.

    Summary

[Appa looks at Zuko pointedly, as if knowing what he’s thinking.

Zuko sighs, and follows his own resolution.

“Does it ever get lonely?” he asks, and then kicks himself mentally over it. That was not an apology.

Aang yelps as the crab manages to grab one of his toes, clashing onto the sand and shaking his foot to get rid of the damn thing. He says, “Sometimes!”]

Or, Zuko apologises to Aang. Aang plays with a crab. Appa is there, for emotional support.

    Summary

When he gets his welcome from the people, Zuko still remembers Lee’s cursing at him, the rejection of his knife and his person itself, the anger of those towns at knowing who Zuko was. When he sleeps on the silk red and gold sheets, Zuko still remembers the cold ground of the Earth Kingdom he slept on for months as a refugee, as he has breakfast from the finest silver plate, he remembers the hunger he felt. Hunger that kept him awake at night.

But Zuko is now back at being the Fire Nation’s Crown Prince. All he could’ve done before is gone, with the eyes and the thoughts he left with his uncle and at the Earth Kingdom. There’s nothing left but a pristine image of the boy– the man Zuko should’ve always been.

Besides, he and his father — they’re doing better.

    Summary

    [“What?” he says, eloquently.

Sokka holds Zuko’s hand not with tenderness, but testing every finger and fingertip, the palm and the back and each knuckle, looking for a warmth that isn’t there, apparently. Surely, it’s all a formal examination, to figure out if Zuko’s hands are indeed as the initial premise stated. Nothing less, nothing more.

“Your hands,” Sokka says, still not looking him in the face. “They’re so cold.”]

Or, Zuko’s hands are cold, and Sokka is... deeply concerned.

    Summary

[Sokka sighs. He doesn’t know how to put it in words. Softer than before, he tells her, “You know, you don’t– you don’t need to be a hero all the time. Maybe someone else is already on their way to defeat the Fire Nation. There are many, many waterbenders, out there.”

    Then Katara sighs.

She just says, “Not from the South.”]

Or, Kya’s, Sokka’s, and most importantly Katara’s understanding of her identity as the last southern waterbender.

    Summary

[Sokka is five when the first mark appears.

It writes itself in a deep red like a wound, as if someone had carved the word “nonbender” in a messy font across the knuckles of his left hand, as if it was handwritten with a knife.

When he asks his mother, as she applies salve on Sokka’s knuckles, she sighs deeply and says nothing for a few moments.

“Sometimes, spirits don’t make much sense.”

Sokka has yet to turn thirteen when he wakes up screaming in pain, about ten soulmarks all over each other between his left shoulder and his ear, red and vivid like burning flesh. Among the few words that are somehow possible to read out of the disastrous scribbling, “disrespectful” and “coward” and “burned” and “sorry sorry sorry” are the ones that stand out the most to Sokka. He thinks, at the tender age of twelve, whoever did this to his soulmate will be sorry too, one day.

A month after Hakoda leaves him with the job of the protector at the age of thirteen, Sokka realizes, with a bitter taste in his mouth, that he’s got more soulmarks than his entire village combined.]

Or, to have a soulmark is to carry the vilest things that your soulmate believes about themselves on your skin.
