Wylan props himself up on one elbow, aware of Jesper’s expression, and hurries to add, “It meant nothing, just a couple of days. And it was only physical.”

“What is clear to me,” says Wylan, his gaze fixed on Jesper, “is that if you’re going to treat me like a piece of shit, then there’s no point in taking my picture.”
Blame sets in the bottom of his stomach, and Jesper looks at the man in front of him helplessly. “Then why did you leave me a letter?”
“Didn’t I just tell you? That was me trying to be the better person.”
Stunned, Jesper stares at him. He sighs, exasperated. “You can’t be cruel and gentle at the same time, Wylan.”
“How are you so sure? You’ve been both for a long time.”

His last night sleeping in Wylan’s bed scares him, because he isn’t sure he’ll be able to let him go after this. Not when he’s looking like the most beautiful being in the entire world, with his dishevelled curls, eyes sky blue and exposed, tempting neck, all curled up on the silken bed like a living dream. But he’s awake, and when Jesper pushes the door open, the boy takes the time to stretch an arm towards him.
“Come to bed” Wylan says, voice drowsy.
Jesper complies. How can he not?

On Tuesday morning it was a pink peony, in the keyhole.
The boy with eyes like the stars was wearing a dress that day, a flowy thing in greens and yellows that grazed the skin of his calves every time he walked. He’d paired that with a battered up pair of All Stars, but Wylan wasn’t one to comment on fashion choices, what with his shapeless sweaters and big scarves.
He smiled at him through his window, and the boy smiled back when he caught him staring.
Alternatively: Wylan Van Eck is an idiot but he still deserves nice things.

He was more than happy to let Wylan set the pace, but Wylan had stopped setting any pace at all and Jesper couldn't ignore it any longer. The way Wylan averted his eyes while Jesper undressed – the way he changed like he was in the school changing room, half-covered and hurried. The way his first act on slipping between the sheets was to turn out the lamp on his bedside table, any action thereafter confined to the secrecy of darkness.

He’s miserable and bored until a chance encounter with a shy artist. He never expected to meet someone sweet, gorgeous, and interested in him in the middle of Iowa.
There’s just one tiny problem: Wylan’s father is nationally prominent and openly homophobic.
