    Summary

Cassie McKay was a legend in women's softball. Nearly 25 years on the national team, she was one of the oldest players around.

Hollywood starlet Victoria Javadi has made a name for herself outside her parents' successes.

When their secret relationship is suddenly public - viral, no less - the pair navigate public perception, family opinion, and a deep desire to be loved by the other.

    Or in other words:

“I mean, I grew up watching Cassie McKay play. She’s been captain of the national softball team for years and she’s still competing at the highest level at forty. That kind of longevity in women’s sport is incredible.”

    Summary

Everyone keeps telling Samira she needs to get laid. But she can’t do something serious right now, and what’s the point of something casual when historically, her casual hookups kinda sucked, or at least were hardly worth the effort? She needs someone who knows what she needs. She needs someone who knows what they’re doing.

So when Cassie McKay makes herself available after a particularly long shift, it’s easy, it turns out, for Samira to ask for what she needs.

    ******

“I’m not straight,” she tells her beer. “Just because I haven’t done more than kissed anyone who’s not a cis guy since college doesn’t mean I’m straight.”

Princess smacks the table. “I knew it!” she crows. “Santos owes me $20.”

“Serves her right for assuming,” Samira snorts. She shakes her head, ears growing hot.

McKay cuffs her on the shoulder. She steps into Samira’s light, her chain glinting around her throat.

“Trinity probably thinks she knows every queer girl—and girl-adjacent queer—in the Pittsburgh area,” she says, smiling. Her eyes are warm and bright. “Not all of us need to proclaim it.”

    “Let’s get right to business.”

Victoria would have preferred the pleasantries. Beside her, Trinity is practically vibrating in anticipation. Samira’s eyes have taken on that wide-eyed brightness that appears every time she’s presented with a challenge. It’s kind of like the look she gets whenever Emery walks in the room. So she supposes she’s outnumbered on this one.

“Dana and I are tired of being outnumbered on spaceflights,” Collins says, walking to stand beside Evans. They linger close enough to each other that Victoria catches one of Trinity’s eyebrows twitching in surprise. “There’s no reason why I should have been the only woman on the Discovery. There’s no reason why Dana shouldn’t be able to be commander of a crew. So, along with the help of McKay and Robby, we’ve been laying the groundwork for a flight whose crew consists entirely of women.”

“We want it to be you,” Evans says. Her smile is dangerous, it’s the kind that makes Victoria want to believe every word she’s saying. “We want it to be us. The six of us.”

“Well,” Javadi says as she bends his foot the way Cassie taught her– the test to make sure all the ligaments are intact. “You shouldn’t have to change yourself to be with someone you like. The right person should like you for you, including what you may or may not lack. And you should like them for them, no matter how much they might piss you off.”

“Hypothetically speaking, right?” Cassie asks, just for clarification on an answer that she’s growing more and more certain of it being no. Javadi just shrugs, which is worse than a yes or a no, and prompts so many questions on the tip of her tongue.

mckay thinks santos and javadi can't stand each other. after she overhears three little words from santos, she can't help but consider the only two possibilities: either santos and javadi's relationship isn't what she thought, or she's slowly going insane

    Summary

"That's a very pretty speech," Garcia says, and then she goes quiet, and Victoria watches her face do something she has seen before. The face of someone who has just decided they have a card and is deciding whether to play it. "Is that what this is about? Teaching?"

    "What else would—"

"Or is it something else." Garcia's eyes move, briefly, to Victoria—just a flick of attention, barely two seconds yet entirely intentional—and back to McKay.

    Victoria's stomach drops.
