It would mean she existed, here and now in this space. If he ever looked back and questioned this, Sonic would be able to reassure him that it was real. She had been here.

Sonic knew that Shadow didn’t have the best reputation. The guy almost blew up the world and while it wasn’t technically his fault, his evil alien dad had attempted to conquer earth. Plus, driving a loud motorcycle while shooting at enemies in the streets wasn’t typical ‘hero’ behavior.
But. C’mon. It was hot.
Others didn’t see it that way though, and despite his best efforts, Sonic couldn’t ignore them forever. He could, however, briefly play the funniest prank imaginable on them, just to get them off his back.
“It’s actually really hurtful to hear people say such horrible things about the father of my baby.”
“What?” The reporter asked, almost dropping her mic as Tails stared at him, knowing he was full of shit.

Grief did things to people, Shadow knew that then, but he hadn’t understood it. He believed that grief made them this way, made them want revenge, made them blind to all reason, but that wasn’t true. Grief did a lot of things, but it never made anyone do anything. It led them to the decisions, and he had blindly followed the professor down the destructive path.
Sonic had merely stepped down that path, grabbed Shadow, and yanked him back.

Whenever Sonic mentioned trying to befriend Shadow and trying to get him to join the team, his friends (and honestly, the whole village) would have negative reactions. He never really had the chance to explain that sometimes, Shadow was nice. It was rare and fleeting at almost every instance, just like him helping Sonic up off the ground, then gone in a flash.
Sonic was sure with just a little more time, Shadow would come around. Hopefully.
