Partially dozing off, he craned his neck back against the window as the intercom signaled they were coming to another station. The doors opened with a ding. The sounds of chatter floated away as a few people got off. Rushed footsteps as more got on.
“Excuse me, sir, is this yours?”
Hawk opened his eyes and looked up, hand tightening on his knee as the subway departed from the station.

They rented the apartment as a pair of roommates. A quaint, pre-war two-bedroom on the third floor, nothing too special. Eventually, they’d turn the second bedroom into a study with a fold-down day bed for good measure. Stick some heavy books on the mattress to dip it down and lay a stack of quilts against the armrest. It’d be useful when Hawk’s mother visited, Tim pointed out.

Summary
It's been five months since the cessation of a peaceful android revolution. Now recognized as people under US law, androids have access to the same legal rights humans do, including marriage, reproduction, and property ownership.
But androids aren't utilizing any of their hard-earned rights. Years of systemic abuse at the hands of humans have discouraged them from integrating with human society in any meaningful way.
President Warren makes a suggestion to Markus during one of their weekly video chats. Why not lead his people by example? If other androids see Markus enjoying the same rights as humans, won't they finally feel safe to emerge from the self-imposed fringe of society?
In other words: Markus has to get married. Markus, who has never had a single romantic thought toward anyone in his entire, brief life.
Now, which of his friends can he count on to bite the bullet with him?
