The maid puts a hand on the barrel as if to lower the gun, but she doesn’t— she merely rests it there comfortably. Her expression twitches: a part of her lips and a slight, rapid shutter of her eyes.
“S-sorry.” Argus lowers the gun. This is real, right? It isn’t only her in the corridor, scared and helpless.

“Well, we're all awake now,” Ichika sighs. “Good job. Now what?”
For a moment, none of them speak. Honami looks at them, shrouded in darkness, all in various states of wakefulness. All of them awake at three in the morning because they couldn't bear to be in bed without each other. The thought fills her with a mix of amusement and affection, and suddenly she knows what they should do.
“Let's go outside,” Honami says. “Watch the stars.”

“You cut your hair.” Shiho blinks.
Ichika shakes it out and smiles shyly. “Do you like it?”

“Honami,” Ichika finally asks, and Honami’s attention snaps back to the present. There’s something oddly profound in the sparkles of Ichika’s eyes— blue and round and shining in a way they hadn’t been a heartbeat before. “Do you believe in soulmates?”
Honami blinks, a bit taken aback. This wasn’t the kind of question she had expected to receive. Her thoughts must’ve mirrored those of the others, because Shiho voices the same thing. “What kind of truth question is that?”
“It’s just something I want to know!” Ichika defends herself, shooting Shiho a glance. “I read about them the other day, and it made me think. Do you think soulmates exist in every universe?”
