Summary
Some people are pulled into each other's orbit whether they want to be or not.
Eva Stratt has spent her life making impossible choices as the Director of the Petrova Line Task Force. Ryland Grace has spent his life avoiding them after being blacklisted from the scientific world. Somewhere between the end of the world and the hope of saving it, they become something neither of them could have planned for; and something they have to realize neither of them can keep.

It was a modest grave. The headstone was small and understated, made of simple stone, but the quote beneath her name was undeniably expensive to carve.
I’d read somewhere that an environmentalist group raised the funds to bury her, though there was no funeral. There were no documentaries about her heroism. There were no celebrations or decorations on her grave. She had no mourners, just grateful children who saw her name in the paper and wanted to do some good.
That was ten years ago today.

“What made you come up with this?” Grace asks. His voice is thick.
“Grace need comfort,” Rocky says matter-of-factly. “Like a hug. This comfort Grace, question?”
Grace presses his hand more firmly against the top of Rocky’s carapace, and Rocky shifts a bit within the xenonite, rising so that they make nearly direct contact through the panel. It’s not like they haven’t done something like this before—Rocky is always pressing his claws up against Grace’s palm—but it’s different for Grace’s whole hand to be so close, to feel the heat of a living thing against his side and against his palm all at once.
“Yeah,” Grace breathes.
