"Nah," Gin-san responds, his voice muffled, halfway past comatose and lying face-down in the grass. The sound of muted conversations coast around them. "My wisdom's just overflowing. I should get paid for tutoring you—oi, make sure to tell your sister. My tutoring services aren't cheap, but I guess I could give you a bit of an employee discount. I take bribes too. Hey, hey, icebenders can make ice cream, can't they? What about a parfait? Frozen yogurt? Pattsuan—"
The air nomads were killed in the Kansei Purge. Kabuki-cho is a port town on the Southeast coast of the Earth Kingdom. Gintoki does not bend. Nothing changes all that much.

“Gin-san,” Shinpachi has started saying. “I just don’t understand why you’ve been so depressed, lately. I wish you would talk to us about it- you know we’re willing to help, however we can!”
Where did he get that idea from?! Gintoki clears his throat and sets the record straight very patiently, very authoritatively.
“I’m not depressed, Patsuan, I just have a little less energy and find less enjoyment in things I used to like.”
“That’s a symptom!”
It’s a shame that Shinpachi can’t identify depression in people very well. He’s listing off advice that would be very useful if Gintoki was depressed, things about being open about your struggles and seeking help. Gintoki isn’t depressed, though. Shinpachi should probably not become a therapist.
or: a food shortage and all the talk around it might have sent Gintoki spiraling, if he was the kind of person who thought about his issues at all ever. He's not, though, and so he's fine.

Shinpachi would walk to and from the flat more often, spending the night less and heading home earlier each night. But through that lonesome walk, a chill had begun pricking at the back of his neck. His hairs would stand but he wouldn’t look. At least, he wouldn’t be obvious.
It’d been too quiet. And for too long. They have far too many enemies for that to be a coincidence.
