Summary
I wrote this at like 3:00am based on a dream I had. So.
.Mike was touchy, it was just in his nature.
Maybe that's why, when Mike reached out, hands cupping his own, leaning in close, a murmur of “I miss you, Will. I miss us,” all Will did was squeeze back, the way he always had.
It started off the same as always, something unintentional that Will could brush off, accident touches that slowly grew into something friendly, platonic, normal. The occasional nudge of an elbow to his side, a long look and a hand reaching out to grip his shoulder. Simple. Friendly.
But now?
Now Mike couldn't seem to be able to keep his hands off of him.
It was driving Will crazy.

“Are you okay?”
A lump formed in Mike’s throat. There was an obvious answer. No, of course he wasn’t okay. No one who was okay would be living like this, a room in disarray, shutting out everyone, failing at everything.
He avoided Will’s worried eyes, feeling the weight of all he couldn’t say: the nightmares, the spiraling thoughts, the guilt clawing at him even in sleep. He couldn’t tell Will, not yet.
“Yeah,” Mike finally let out, quiet, weak. “I’m okay.”
Will’s gaze didn’t waver. His lips pressed together, his eyes sharp.
“Okay,” he said slowly. "Let me rephrase that." Then, with a quiet authority that made Mike freeze, he added, “You’re not okay.”

After closing the gate and moving out of Hawkins, Mike and Will are battling a new war: grief.

Summary
His entire body hurts like a bitch. He wraps his arms around himself as he shivers, a cold, achy feeling settling into his muscles. He swallows, wincing at the soreness and discomfort in his throat. He tries to sit back up, but immediately regrets it as the pounding behind his eyes becomes worse and dizziness overtakes him.
Mike doesn’t even bother lying to himself. He’s definitely sick.
But he can't be late to class. So he's going even if it kills him.
Or Modern-day college AU sickfic where Mike tries to ignore the fact that he's sick so he doesn't miss class, but Will finds him passed out on a park bench. Because of course giving Will a heart attack is part of their relationship

“What’s wrong?” Mike asked, not bothering with pretenses. He loved seeing Will, but Will was not a climb-through-the-window-in-the-middle-of-the-night kind of boyfriend. He was the kind of boyfriend for gentle kisses on the cheek to say “good morning”. He was the kind of boyfriend for soft, shared looks and hooking their ankles together underneath the dinner table. He was the kind of boyfriend for late-night calls, notes slipped in lockers, and entire-ass paintings as presents.
They enjoyed a make-out session in the back of the art room as much as the next couple, but they weren’t anywhere near the stage of climbing through each other’s windows to see each other.
So if Will was climbing into his bedroom in the middle of the night, it meant something was seriously wrong.

In which Will isn’t sleeping at night and Mike is desperate to help.

Billy Hargrove hit Mike just a little bit harder, Max woke up just a little bit later and Mike Wheeler had always had shitty luck. He gets drugged, hauled to Russia and jabbed with so many needles that he doesn’t know where he began and the needles ended.
But it’s not so bad (He’s lying, it fucking sucks) at least he has the boy in the bed next to his, and relatively regular mealtimes and- Yeah, he's having trouble coming up with anything positive.
He just wants to go home, but the doctor and this strange new thing in his chest aren’t going to let him. That’s fine, he’ll just have to get himself out.

For a moment, Mike just keeps nodding. Lucas calls Almost ready! over the din of panic and Will tries to steady his breathing. He doesn’t know how he’d ended up being the one they trust with the stitches, but he gets their reasoning. Steady artists hands, they’d all said, even Mike, wincing while draining half the bottle. Then: I trust you.
“It was the hottest thing I’ve ever seen,” Mike repeats, like Will simply hadn’t heard him. “When you, like,” Mike dramatically wipes his nose with his good arm, eyes flashing dark. He misses, a little, and Will grabs his hand to bring it gently back down, but he gets the picture.
OR
Mike is severely injured in the Upside Down. He admits some things to Will, drunk out of his mind. They talk about it.

The ripple of anger in the air at Will's outburst sent a thrill through Mike, and he gulped as he tried to stomach Will's anger, the way his eyebrows drew together and his eyes welled up. Instead of shying away, he remained where he was, unflinching as he prepared himself for what he was about to say.
"I never said you weren't insane," Mike decided, resisting the urge to smile but failing miserably. "I think you're mad. Completely bonkers and insane." He took Will's face in both hands then, holding his eye contact like his life depended on it. "But you're not at all evil like he is. You're just Will Byers who can do badass shit and help us kill this bastard."
After the events of the military base, Mike guards Will at the radio station and tries and fails to keep a nosey Robin Buckley away. A conversation follows when Will finally wakes up.

Its not the first time he’s done it. It’s the fourth, actually. She’s been here, with him, a little over a week. Nancy, his mom, and his dad have been dead a little over a month now. Holly wants peanut butter and nutella on her sandwich, and he knows for a fact Mom never let her have peanut butter and nutella. Too much sugar. Mom is dead.
He spreads peanut butter on one side. A little less nutella on the other. Wonders if he’s doing this wrong, if Mom had a special way of making sandwiches that he suddenly can’t remember.
Something drips off of his chin. Hits his wrist. Itches a little. Dries there. Oh. He’s crying.

“Uh… earlier when you went upstairs…” he started. Mike’s face scrunched in confusion before realization dawned on his features.
“Max wanted lame stories of you- you know how she is..” Mike rolled his eyes fondly, relaxing into the pillows. “And Dustin told one we hadn’t heard before…” Will averted his eyes, suddenly gaining interest in the hangnail on his right thumb.
“What was it? I’m sure I’ve done enough dumb shit in my life to fuel Max’s entertainment for a few years more, it can’t be that bad.” He grinned, only faltering when Will didn’t smile back at him.
“Mike,” he really didn’t know how to say it best. “Dustin told us you jumped off the quarry to save his life.”
That works.

The Party, and more importantly Will, finds out about Mike's incident at the quarry back in 1983 and the news is taken about as well as you'd expect. Mike revisits some unresolved trauma as a result, but he's not alone this time.

“Yeah—Will, no worries—” Lucas started, reaching for his bag, about to pull out the extra hoodie he’d packed for tomorrow. But before he could even unzip the damn thing, Mike literally yanked his own hoodie off and tossed it at Will like it was nothing. Will let out a tiny “oomph” as it landed on him, clearly not expecting it.
“I got it, Lucas,” Mike said, smug as hell. Yeah, no shit, Michael. Lucas just stared. Seriously? If he’d asked Mike for a jacket, it would have involved like…seven passive-aggressive comments. Not whatever the hell this is.
