The water rises and Eddie’s resolve diminishes with every inch closer it gets.

Summary
Buck’s not really sure what to say here, so he doesn’t say anything. For a minute they stand there in total silence, the TV muted, and looking at Eddie – the defeated slump of his shoulders, the hand over his mouth, the eyes staring blankly at nothing – it’s like those modern art installations one of Buck’s exes used to take him to: Man, with broken heart.
Man, eviscerated.
Buck’s no good with people being sad around him – it always feels like his responsibility, like if they aren’t smiling it’s his fault, and this time it really is his fault, at least partially, so he offers, “You can beat me up, if it would make you feel better.”

Summary
A patient is flirting with Buck. The good news is, Buck seems to be enjoying himself immensely judging by his tilted grin and the fact that he’s lingering while Hen and Eddie actually try to do their jobs. The bad news is… all of the above.
“Alright, Buck,” Chim swoops in like Eddie’s knight in shining armor. “Stop distracting your husband and let him do his job.”
Buck’s face drops, gawking at Chimney as he continues on his way to the truck.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize…” their patient begins, her shoulders bunching to her ears.
“No!” Buck waves his hands, whipping his head down to look at her. “No. Soon to be ex-husband, actually.”
She makes a face. Eddie tries not to. “That sounds… complicated,” she says.
“Nope. Not complicated at all,” Buck insists. “We got married as a joke in Vegas. It didn’t mean anything. Drunken mistake.”
Eddie clenches his jaw, praying for the ground to open up and drag him under.
Eddie has come to the decision that a forever love is not for him. He plans to remain happily single for the rest of his life. That is, until a drunken night in Vegas changes everything.

Buck huffs against him, one hand closing in around his shoulder blade while the other slides down the expanse of his back and hugs the small of his back. “What next? Are you gonna lift your leg for the full princess experience?”
Eddie freezes. It’s a joke. He knows it’s a joke. He wishes his body and nervous system knew all the same. He feels a subtle tightening in his chest like his body is threatening to close in on itself but instead of it doing that, it unravels, slowly. Something akin to a caterpillar slowly shedding its cocoon before it becomes a butterfly. The endearment settles softly between his ribcage, making itself at home as though it was always made to fit.

He’s going to tell him he put in the notice on the loft, and they’re going to head to the bar with their family, and they’re both going to smile while Eddie drives away, even if it kills them. That is, until Eddie says it.

In hindsight, he really wishes he could have taken a deep breath, said no, c’mon, of course—that’s, that’s not even a question. He would prefer to take back the angry laugh, too.

It's a Thursday evening, at the end of a 24-hour shift, and Eddie is in the bathroom at the house brushing his teeth when Buck leans in the doorway behind him and says, "I'm going to take a shower."
It's such an ordinary thing to say–Buck says it five times a week, minimum–except that Eddie's brain snags on the tik tok video from a few days ago, and his mouth moves before he thinks better of it.
"Information or invitation?"
He says it in the exact tone of someone delivering a punchline, light and a little teasing, clearly expecting Buck to groan at the callback and go shower alone. It is a joke. It is absolutely, entirely a joke, and the correct response from Buck would be a tired chuckle.
Buck doesn't laugh.
He meets Eddie's eyes in the mirror, something shifting behind his face, and says, "Invitation."There is a silence.
It's the kind of silence that Eddie can feel on his skin, that is doing something specific to the air between them, and he watches his own face in the mirror very carefully and does not turn around.

You traded that away the morning you decided I wasn't worth staying for. And I get it, Eddie. You had to go, for Chris. I know. But for fucks sake. I would have come with you. I would’ve—" There it is. The thing he never let himself admit. I would’ve come with you. You never asked. I’d’ve followed you across the country without a second of hesitation, and you decided I was easier to leave behind than to bring along. “I would’ve said yes to anything. But you didn’t ask.”
