Things start to get a little tricky, however, when he's contracted to eliminate the Phantom Thieves, and a run-in with their mischievous leader throws his well-hidden double life into complete disarray.

“Maki,” he repeats, and it’s like a missing piece of his soul falls back into place. The record of his life before he fought the Six-Eyes brat is a long, impossibly white scroll of nothing -- but written on it in faint letters is the name of a child, a child with a delicate name that brushed the heavens, spun a prayer into letters; a name that began with an M, and it ended in i, too.
“Maki,” he says again. “I think you’re my daughter.”

Summary
The girl dives out of the way in time, the Shadow’s maw just barely missing her head. Akechi intends to withdraw his weapon, call Hereward, do something, but before he can she’s snatching a broom from the entrance to the ramen bar and plunging the butt of it into the Shadow’s body. The Shadow howls, incapacitated, and she uses the opportunity to barrage it with more attacks, twirling the broom around like it’s her fucking birthright.
Akechi is too stunned to move. Eventually, the Shadow slinks away, retreating too far and too fast for either of them to chase it down.
“Aw,” she says, puffing out her cheeks, “I wanted to finish it off.”
… Maybe he should have intervened earlier. He gives her a long, proper look this time— her wild, red locks, her vibrant gaze, her uniform, now drenched in Shadow blood.
“What did you say your name was?” he asks.
“Shiomi,” she says, smiling brightly. “Kotone Shiomi.”
The appearance of a retired savior brings light to feelings Akechi long thought he’d buried.

PACES ROOM PACES ROOM PACES ROOM. my god. i have so many thoughts abt ratiomei and i really appreciated their like ability to level with each other intellectually. but ruan mei's aloofness and dedication to her studies and research means she doesnt have time for ratio who is also a little too far up his own ass to really look at her properly beyond just intellect- but omfg THIS FIC IS SOOOOO LIKEEEEE the characterization of ratio is so good. hes somewhat tender... demure...... his quips are gentler, more mellow. its so in character for like, if they ever had a romance, this is what theyd be like. it's simple, but also not at all: two geniuses who never really encountered or cared for love, but they make it work.
