“Why are we staying behind?” Ryoji finally had the courage to ask, following behind Makoto, but not preparing his weapon.
Makoto stopped in his tracks when they finally reached a dead end, then turned around to face Ryoji with an expression he couldn’t read at all. His eyebrows were pinched together, and his usual poker face was slightly tighter than usual.

In all honesty, he was less than focused on the fight. How could he be?
