But as it is, the two blue lines appear on the stick during the worst months of her life, the first months of the pandemic when she’s unemployed and shit scared that her dad is going to get coronavirus and die. And when she sees them, she just thinks: well, this might as well happen. She was a disappointment before. What’s one more thing?

But there were nights in which she had dreams that she didn’t understand, flashes of images that didn’t make sense. She dreamt of the bluest eyes she had ever seen and she woke up crying.
She was too hot; face burning, heart rotting and she didn’t even understand why. Those blue eyes meant a lot to her, so much that only getting a glimpse of them overwhelmed her.

And I’ll like, put candles on them and sing and everything. And then we can fuck on the kitchen counter if you want- like a real birthday party, right?”
They’ve managed their way to the front steps of his mother’s house, but Carmy’s yet to work up the nerve to ring the doorbell. He’s leaned against the railing, an arm crossed over his chest and a hand to his mouth, pinching his top lip (a habit Sydney hates). She saddles up next to him, takes the offending hand in her own, squeezes it tight; Carmy finally looks over at her.
“Very tempting,” he concedes, a grin flashing before quickly fading, his eyes landing back on the house before them.
