“Hans.”
Silence falls at last, sudden and complete. They stand facing one another, close enough now that Henry can see the pulse fluttering at Hans’ throat. Close enough to see the way his hands tremble, just slightly, at his sides. Henry steps forward and sets the book firmly on the bed between them. He straightens, meeting Hans’ eyes at last.
“I know you wrote this,” he says.
Hans’ carefully assembled mask falters, its edges cracking to reveal a sharp pain behind his eyes. Then he laughs, once, short and broken, and drags a hand through his hair. Behind it all, a small and delicate flicker of something remains, a trembling ounce of hope.
“How,” Hans stops himself, taking a deep breath before continuing, “how much of it did you read?”...
“All of it.”
OR: What if that book and potion we find under Hans’ bed in the Devil’s Den were ACTUALLY his (and written about a certain someone), and Henry finds it…?

Henry's snort is fond when it leaves his lungs, more exhale than sound. "You're hairy too," he offers graciously, flicking his eyes down a pale chest. His memory conjures up images of blond tufts—darkened with water, clustered beneath a navel, peeking coyly from under an armpit—before he banishes them. "It's just hard to see on your arms and legs, cause your hair is so fine. It makes your skin look soft," he adds, crazily, airing a thought that should have been kept barred and bolted.
"Do you think about my skin often, blacksmith's boy?"
"No." Henry is distracted; Hans's finger is twisting around his chest hair, an entirely new sensation for Henry's body. His spine tingles. "Maybe. I dunno."

If you asked poets and minstrels, and lovey-dovey aristocrats wooing naive wenches across Bohemia, they would tell you that absence makes the heart grow fonder. If you asked young lord Hans Capon of Pirkstein, however, he’d tell you it’s an idiotic, pestilential sentiment coined by some daft cunt who never had to suffer the terror and indignity of being parted from their heart’s desire. Or they’ve just never met Henry.
Each time Hans cannot see him, the walls of the world start closing in, threatening to crush him. Each time Henry is away, the young lord has to face the terrifying reality of longing, craving, dreaming, yearning—and the frustration of not knowing whether the blacksmith’s boy is even alive. Worse! The frustration of not knowing whether the bastard misses him as bad as Hans does.
And then, each time Henry returns to him, two crucial things dawn upon Capon’s head: one, he needs to remember there are books that speak of love he dares not voice himself. Two: he might not agree with absence making the heart fonder, but it sure does make his cock ache.

In which Rattay is raided just weeks after Skalitz. Hanush is abducted and Hans is presumed dead. In his efforts to find Hanush by infiltrating Istvan's camp, he finds the young lord of Rattay, alive, and being offered up to him as a reward for his loyalty. Henry will abandon his mission - he'll do whatever he can to get Hans to safety.

And then it was day seven, and Hans was certain that Henry had been faking it. His laughter had been polite, his banter disinterested, and while the young lord had felt giddy, felt like someone was finally, finally looking at him—it'd been mostly concussion. The blacksmith boy had been relieved to be rid of him, annoyed that he hadn't listened to him about the boar, amused that Hans had been such an asshole about the horse and then been dragged off of his own, and content in the knowledge that he hadn't accidentally gotten Hans killed. He'd curled up in bed that day, frightening the maid they sent in to clean as she was sure his health had suddenly plummeted as he stared, red eyed, at the wall and refused to move or eat.
And then, like a vision, on day ten, Henry was there.
