Rory closes the book after reading the messy scrawl from the boy that broke her heart.
She’s never described herself as an angry person before, but she can feel a ball of rage in her core, threatening to escape. She shoves the book back into her bag, along with that feeling of white hot anger. Because she’s done. She meant what she said. She is not going to pine.
Rory leans her head against the window.
Unbelievable, she had purposefully only brought books that she knew he didn’t get his hands on. His dirty, grubby, nicotine and pen stained, lovely hands, that knew just the right way to touch her–
Of course he would still find a way to surprise her, even as she’s running away as far as she can from him. No matter if he did it first. She needs to run.

She knelt down beside her bed and pulled out a small cardboard box. Opening it, she slowly lifted out its contents and placed them on the floor: her copy of Howl, a crumpled carton of cigarettes, her Distillers t-shirt, a smattering of polaroids, and a small collection of mixtapes.
One tape in particular caught her eye. She and Jess used to have this joke whenever he gave her mixtapes. He’d title them all “Trust me,” an echo to a moment in the early days of their friendship. The Shaggs were never her favorite, but she remembered sitting on the bus to school the week after the bracelet fiasco, giggling to herself about how funky and deranged the Wiggin Sisters sounded on her CD player. From then on, he’d give her those mixes with a “trust me” written in scrawled sharpie on a peeling piece of masking tape, signaling his newest installment and her eagerness to take anything he was willing to give her.
Rory looked over every piece of him she had left. She had already shed so many tears over this boy. What were a few more?

She’s holding a book, flipping through the pages from thumb to thumb like she’s shuffling a deck of cards. She looks up, bright-eyed and sparkling and questioning. He shrugs, hands shoved deep in his pockets. “Well, what is much?” And when she grins at him, something warm and golden drips like honey down the inside of his ribcage
He pushes off the railing, crosses the fire escape in two steps and fishes out the next cigarette. It’s lit, it’s between his lips, he draws and it’s burning his throat, his lungs, his mind, the memory. He spits the smoke back out, rubbing the back of his neck hard with his free hand just for something to do with the jitteriness. Fuck it.
The Subsect is finished at last. Now all Jess has to do is write the dedication.
