Summary

One of her eyebrows rises high enough to be hidden behind her fringe.
“This is what I’m trained for,” he brushes off her obvious skepticism.
“For combat, yeah,” she agrees. “Not for the enemy being your own mind-controlled teammates, or for your best friend to get taken as leverage by Blood Witches. And,” she glances around, but the outdoor area is devoid of other students. “I know you were on weird terms, but…Beatrix…”
His face falls immediately, although he tries — and fails — to cover it up by clearing his throat and changing his posture to stare off into the distance instead of at her.
“I’m not sure what happened between you two, but I know you cared about her, for some time at least.”

It's twenty to nine, and the starry sky is a deep shade of midnight blue, and Erin's arm is still linked with James'.
As it has been for the better part of two minutes by now.
Erin's pretty sure she should probably let go at some point, or maybe that's James' responsibility, what does she know, she's no expert, but he's not made any move to shake off her arm and Erin doesn't know how to unlink it without making it terribly awkward. She's also becoming increasingly concerned that the point she was supposed to let go lies about two minutes in the past when they stepped out onto the street, and aware that it's only gonna get more difficult with every step they take -
But she also won't mind holding on to it a little longer. Not that much, anyway.
