Summary
It was just a walk; simply a way of burning off some energy before bed. It presented a fine opportunity to find some inspiration for poetry; perhaps an owl, looking for its mate on a moonlit windowsill, or a lone chess piece on the worn wooden floor, longing to be reunited with its battalion.
Thomas found himself where he knew he was headed all along.

The Captain had shot up out of bed, swagger stick pointed rudely at his face.

There he was at his door, the pseudo cowboy with his beiges and browns and tassels. His brows were furrowed with concern beneath his hat, and his face was flushed. He had a suitcase in hand, as though he had just come from the airport. Had he just come from the airport?
Days after Rachael's death, Chas is left reeling. Eli comes over as soon as he hears the news.

Eli had come here, of all places. He had always been prone to following Richie and Margot around as children. And Margot in adulthood, Chas mused. Chas was a friend, but always more of an afterthought, and it had been mutual, really. He had been far too preoccupied with his work in his youth.
But now he was here. Chas didn’t know what to do with that.
After months of exchanging letters, Eli comes to Chas's house as his first stop out of rehab.

"[The Captain] fiddled with his tie as he walked down the corridor, but was stopped in his tracks by a sudden wailing cry. He smirked briefly, unable to suppress his amusement at the thought of Julian and his houseguests, before carrying on down the main staircase, and out into the gardens.
He’d made the right decision in switching rooms last night, clearly. He had no doubt that Michael’s parents would have provided enough of a disturbance to have made sleep a moot point. And, if nothing else, at least he didn’t have to worry about Thomas phasing through him in the middle of the night.
At that thought, the Captain abruptly came to a halt. He placed his swagger-stick under his arm and drew in a tremulous breath.
Nothing about Thomas had been incorporeal last night. Nothing whatsoever. The memory of his solidity, of the weight of his body, of the sheer warmth of that contact—".
Displaced from his bedroom over the Christmas period, the Captain is forced to make new sleeping arrangements.
