Ghost had survived that incident but carried the guilt until meeting Soap, where he had learned to forgive himself. However, upon finding Roach, he begins to withdraw from Soap, and unfortunately the team follows suit unknowingly. As any good team, they simply want to help Roach and ensure his safety and progress. They all knew him of course, all but Soap.
