Bookmarker's Notes
Danse can only nod, emotion welling in his throat. Stiffly, he says, “Elder Maxson allowed me to live,” and recognizes his own defensive pride in the words. He had believed in Maxson, only to be forced to leave the Brotherhood behind. He has been branded as the enemy he rightfully is. What use has he for pride?
Valentine leans against the artillery and tucks his hands into his pocket. He raises the plates of his face that would have once his eyebrows. “It sounds to me like you convinced him to let you live. Those are two different things, Danse.”
“It’s true. The general saved me, but I begged for my life,” Danse says calmly. He completes the thought and says, reluctant, “I suppose that makes it mine by right.”

Summary
What would have happened if Governor Swann had stabbed the heart of Davy Jones? Perhaps he would become empty, hollow. Perhaps he would become vengeful. Perhaps this would provide an opportunity, and he would say things propriety had kept him from, and go to lengths he had not known before.
Ye be warned: this fic is pretty full of angst, but has some touching moments between Weatherby and James.

Bookmarker's Notes
“It doesn’t matter what I do.” Weatherby’s voice carried with it a new monotony, a more even tone than his former exuberance allowed. “Once my usefulness has run its course, Beckett will kill me. Completely.”
“Someone has to take your place.” James had turned to him fully now, outlined by dimming light.
He still doesn’t understand. “It isn’t a promotion, is it?” James stared at him, eyes full of questions, and this time, Weatherby did reach out, placing a hand on James’ shoulder. “Your sense of duty has served you, James.” He hadn’t used the man’s Christian name in so long, it felt almost foreign. “But Beckett has a way of twisting even the best parts of us.”
It was a shame, a fear, a grief Weatherby had never seen in the Admiral, not in all their years knowing each other. But there was a determination there, too, an acceptance. James will bear any burden asked of him.
“The dark side of ambition,” James whispered, hoarse. Then, taking a breath, “How bad is the pain? When they take out the heart.”

Summary
Admiral Norrington and Davy Jones sail upon the Flying Dutchman by order of Lord Beckett. Their forced alliance nearly ends fatally. Beckett assesses and supervises.
(or: character studies mid-AWE, from the perspective of Lord Cutler Beckett)

Bookmarker's Notes
“Enough,” Beckett interrupts. “You two really should learn to work together. I think you’ll find that you share some useful commonalities.”
Norrington looks genuinely offended. Jones only laughs, a terrible squawking sound, and his pipe puffs little rings of smoke around the room with each breath.
“Look at him. An admiral who has never sailed a ship for his own,” Jones says, and blows a ring of smoke right in Norrington’s face. “If man’s great accomplishment on this earth was free will, you've found the only dog on the sea without any, milord.”

Summary
“Come with me.”
Elizabeth narrows her eyes. “What?”
James speaks quickly and with none of his usual deliberation. “I’m returning to Lord Beckett. I can bargain for pardons for yourself and Turner. We can help his father and yours from there. Come with me.”
(or: Norrington makes an offer before they leave Isla Cruces)

Bookmarker's Notes
“I am the one positioned to do the most with it,” he says. “Sparrow only serves to save himself. Turner only seeks to save his father, foresight be damned.”
“And you are so different? By betraying them both, you serve a cause greater than yourself?”
“Yes,” he snarls. “What have I done, in all the time you’ve known me, besides serve others?”
Her head swims with exhaustion and reels from the flood of emotions she has kept dammed up for so long. She speaks harshly, rashly: “I cannot deny you’ve always been a man of honor,” she sneers. “So this is your way back into good society, is it? You need only lose your brain, sell your soul, and scheme around everyone you might have called an ally.”
