“Yeah, unless I don’t finish my degree.” It’s a grumpy little mumble, barely meant for Yelena, but she responds to it nevertheless.
“What do you mean?“ she demands. “You only have a small amount of time left! Why would you stop now?”
“I don’t know,” Kate murmurs, and Yelena is bewildered to hear a faint echo in her own emptiness, coming from nearly six thousand kilometers away. “I just don’t really know what to do now, I guess. Clint says I’m the new Hawkeye, but that’s not official or anything. And even when it is, it’s going to be a lot of training. So I’m waiting to wait, or something, and — and I don’t know why I’m talking to you about this, actually.”
“Sometimes, it’s nice to just talk,” Yelena thinks and then says. “But I don’t think you should drop out of school, Kate Bishop. School is cool.”

Summary
Minjeong turns her face to the sky. “God,” she whispers when the stars blur sharp and too close. “God, forgive me.”
“No,” Jimin says, voice raw. She’s going to die like this. “Don’t ask Him for that.”
Minjeong turns to her, eyes salted, shattered electric. “I’m not,” she shudders, anoints Jimin’s forehead with spit and light. “I’m asking you.”
Small towns know too much and forgive too little. Their latest eschatological parable goes like this: the sunburnt storm and the golden lamb find each other nineteen and knee-deep in creekwater, learn something of thistle itch and fever hymn. Bruised halos and wildfire lips, they waste their fathers’ diesel to cross county lines.
It’s a hard lesson for a homily now, but the origin is awfully simple. Minjeong prays for something holy. Jimin answers with an open mouth.

Only to be disappointed when they turn their head and it's a different slope of a nose, a different smile, none of Gyeoul's blinding radiance.
And yet she stares.
Stares until the woman shivers at nothing, looking up, and Jimin holds her breath because for once, her heart finally got it right.
Blonde hair longer than she remembers tied up in a messy bun, brown eyes with the familiar sparkles staring back at her, surprised, and it’s like watching creamer dissolve in dark coffee—transforming into something new, something lighter.
