“She explained that she had found me through the foundation, and wanted to reach out to me before she did anything else.” Her hands reassuringly squeezed around Ilya’s ones, eyes never leaving his even for a second. With a deep breath in, she closed her eyes. “She told us her name is Irina. Irina Sergeevna Rozanova.”

Irina Rozanova survives her suicide attempt but goes into hiding. Only after Grigori dies, she feels safe enough to find her son.

“We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”
Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.
“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”
Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.

“No, it fucking wasn’t, Ilya!” Shane shouted, eyes shining. “There is quite literally nowhere else that I would rather be. I have moved heaven and earth to have you in my life. You make me. Do you understand that? Loving you makes me who I am. It is a privilege to be here when you are having a hard time. But oh my fucking god, I am so tired of you treating me like absolute dog shit when you get sad. It has to fucking stop."
Ilya Rozanov is being a vicious asshole, and he won't let himself think about why. But after a fight with Yuna and Shane, he's forced to confront what's actually below the surface. Shane Hollander shows up to take good care of his sad lover.

Ilya is frozen for a second, eyes flicking down to the pillow. David is offering. And his body still feels so heavy to hold up. He moves slowly, like he’s afraid something is going to jump out at him (which is kind of embarrassing), until he comes to rest on his side, his head against the soft pillow.
Without looking away from his book, David reaches over to pull Ilya’s blanket - which had traveled with him - up to rest just under his chin. He leaves his arm over Ilya, resting on his back. Holding him.
Ilya sniffles.
