    Summary

Zuko never meant to isolate himself. He never meant to pull away from his friends.

He just didn't know how else to keep his secret safe.

After the fight with Tagah, he realizes just how much he's missed them all. Maybe he can make this work. Maybe it's been long enough, he's worked hard enough to keep it together around them without them finding out -

    Nope. Of course he can't.

Sokka would never make it that easy. Neither would Aang, or Toph, or even Katara.

So what's he going to do now?

    Summary

“I see you,” Neytiri had whispered to him. She’d placed her hand on his face, her wide palm dwarfing his jaw. Jake had pulled him into his arms, with Neytiri crushing him from the other side. He had closed his eyes and let their bodies warm his chilled skin, brace the tremors that wracked his frame, ignoring Jake’s jade knife pressing into his thigh from where it’d been abandoned on the ground. He’d smiled through the tears, accepted Jake’s hand pulling him up from the ground, and had followed them back to Neytiri’s mount, Sa’ata, which had carried them up into the air and away from the forest that had nearly become his final resting place.

And yet, Spider was sure that a part of him would never leave that forest clearing, that narrow log, that patch of sunlight that Jake had chosen because it had seemed like the nicest place where he could sacrifice Spider.

    * * *

Jake, Neytiri, and Spider stop at High Camp on their way home from the rescue of Jake and near-sacrifice of Spider. Comfort and such ensues.

    Summary

Sokka is a man of astute observations and stunning investigational prowess, except for when it comes to one particular person.

Or: Five times Sokka assumes Zuko is ignoring him, and the one time he finally realizes, after a love confession nearly goes awry, that Zuko is deaf and blind on his scarred side.

    Summary

    Sokka finds out that Zuko’s life-threatening, Sozin-comet-powered, crazy-blue-fire-prodigy-inflicted lightning wound didn’t scar.

And Sokka’s got questions about that.

Because if that didn’t scar, how in Koh’s lair did he get the one on his face?

Or: The one in which there are uncomfortable conversations, dramatic life-threatening events, and undiscovered traumatic depths to be plumbed on a weekend beach vacation. As is the ATLA norm.

    Summary

“I don’t want to hurt you,” Sokka stresses, staring down into startled golden eyes, “you’re one of the best fighters I’ve ever had to go up against. Zuko, you terrified the tiger-sealskin out of me the first few times we met. I’m not dismissing you because I got one lucky hit in — I’m trying not to hurt you again, because I don’t want to do that. Not even if it would give me an advantage in a fight.”

“But—” Zuko shakes his head, dark hair swaying with the movement, and then he frowns. “Then you’re a bad fighter. If you don’t use the advantages you’re given, you’ll never win.”

“Has it never occurred to you that maybe I don’t want to win?” Sokka frowns back just as intently, deliberately ignoring the you’re a bad fighter comment and instead focusing on the latter part of the sentence. “I mean, I do, but not if I have to rely on advantages that get you hurt to do it. We’re training as friends, not as enemies.”

Zuko’s look turns incredulous, and he seems a little helpless when he asks, “What’s the difference?”

After joining the Gaang, Zuko and Sokka spar. Zuko doesn't dodge, Sokka doesn't understand, and they become friends. Somewhere in there, they talk.
