Summary
Kang Sae-byeok was born in a small, tired village in the rural Musan County of North Hamgyong Province, North Korea. At 17, she overhears her parents planning to escape— to run north, to cross the Tumen river and flee far from the neglected province and the terrors of the country itself. Sae-byeok doesn’t butt-in at first, watching her parents carefully from a distance as she does her chores in the river and daily routine with her younger brother, Cheol.
Despite the silent spying, her parents eventually let her in on the plan. At 18, Sae-byeok is about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. The risk is immeasurable, but the reward is higher still. Freedom. Proper food. A proper life. Whatever the run has to offer, Sae-byeok is ready.
