Summary
“Shane.” Ilya takes Shane’s head in his hands, squeezes his cheeks so that Shane looks puffy, absurd. Beloved. “I am saying that to me, even though you are retired, you will always be No. 1 hockey player. Fuck Wayne Gretzky.”
That’s what does it, as Ilya knew it would. Shane rears back, spluttering, outraged, trying not to laugh.
“Oh, I have committed blasphemy now. They will take back my citizenship, big crime, very sad.”
Shane smoothes his hands along Ilya’s calves, rests his fingertips on Ilya’s ankles. “Fuck Wayne Gretzky,” he says. He looks like he can’t believe what he’s saying. Ilya wonders, distantly, if he can get it on tape to play back to himself when things feel particularly bleak. “We can live in exile together. I don’t care. You’re my, my best, my second best hockey player forever too.”
--
Shane decides he has to retire. Ilya, of course, will go with him.

Summary
The biggest reason, the reason Eddie won’t give this nurse, is that they want it. Buck wants a baby, wants Eddie’s baby, wakes Eddie up in the middle of the night with the wanting of it, and Eddie — Eddie gave Buck his firstborn years ago. He doesn’t see any reason why they should delay it again.
--
Buck and Eddie are going to have a baby. And Eddie's happy, he is. He's never been happier in his life. He just can't stop thinking about all the mistakes he made the first time around.

Summary
Maddie goes back to work at dispatch, and Carla starts watching Jee and Robbie. May tells Buck that, cross-legged on the couch and tapping concentratedly at her phone. That’s OK. Buck can feel the space the anger is supposed to be, and he closes his eyes, and it goes. He knows. He knows he’s not the kind of person you can tell things, not any more. Ravi says 'oh my god dude there was this totally sick play last night I’ll send you the TikTok' and Eddie says 'how about linguine on Saturday' and Maddie says 'shit I forgot to get cash out I’ll Venmo you' and Buck thinks he’s dead he’s dead he’s dead
He knows that isn’t fair. Same grief taste. Same bleeding mouths.
--
After Bobby dies, Buck moves in with May, and buries himself in busyness. Eddie decides enough is enough.

Summary
“If you don’t come here, I will come to you.”
“Rozanov.”
“I will drive,” Ilya tells him without sympathy. “Park illegally in my big muscle car. Everyone will notice. Lots of photos, probably.”
Shane rubs his forehead. He gets to his feet and glances at his bag, still packed, on the hotel dresser.
“I hate your car,” he says, at last.
“Yes, I know,” Ilya says. It sounds like he’s smiling.

Summary
“Eddie, I’m in love with you,” he says, heart thrumming in his chest, in his throat, in his mouth. He feels hot and cold and dizzy by turns.
“What?” asks Eddie faintly, barely even a question.
“I’m in love with you,” Buck says again. “I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to, but I am. I am.”
“You– Right, okay,” says Eddie, so visibly buffering that it makes Buck’s heart clench a little in his chest. Of course he’s in love with Eddie. How could he possibly have let himself pretend otherwise. “Wasn’t expecting this, bud,” says Eddie, and he sounds so shocked that Buck can’t help a wry smile. Of course Eddie’s surprised. They must be the only two people in existence who didn’t already know. “I– Buck, man, you know that I care about you, but…”
“I know,” he says gently to Eddie, because he did know, but that doesn't make this moment hurt any less.
---
Post season 8, Buck confesses his feelings, Eddie lets him down as gently as he can, and they both try to figure out how to be just friends.

Summary
Buck kissed him. It didn’t feel like a declaration the way kisses usually do. It didn’t feel stifling. It felt like a plea. It felt like exactly what he said, like don’t go. Buck is still getting over Tommy, and Eddie is straight, and the two of them—it’s easy between the two of them.
The engine roars and Buck turns to look at him, eyebrows raised as if asking if he’s ready. Eddie nods, swallows, and puts his head back. Buck kissed him, and they won’t talk about it, and Eddie’s fine with that because really, Buck’s the only thing that’s ever been easy for Eddie.

Summary
Carla turned off the car and turned to him. “It’s just you and me,” she said. “What happened, baby?”
Everyone said he’d been such a sweet kid. Every time he opened his mouth, he could hear himself pushing that kid farther away.
“Nothing,” said Chris.
