“Carlos, baby.” TK gently grabs Carlos’s jaw and tilts his head up so they’re making eye contact again. “It was an accident. Look at him, he’s fine.”
He cranes his head to see Jonah sitting at the table, swinging his legs happily and slipping potato chips between the bread of his peanut butter and jelly sandwich to make it crunchy, just the way his Tío Teo taught him a couple weeks ago. He takes a big bite and hums gleefully.
“It was just an accident,” TK repeats with a sympathetic smile.
“I’m supposed to protect him,” Carlos says weakly.
“And you did. I’m sure you held him and comforted him, you put that bandaid on his head. But, baby, he’s three years old. He’s lawless. You can’t protect him from every fall or trip. I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t gotten a head injury on my watch yet.”
“Well you are the head injury master,” Carlos quips, animating his comment with a snarky little shrug.
“Ha ha.”

Jonah’s a very sweet boy and while he may not fully understand it, he knows that whatever is going on in Marjan’s tummy is something to be revered. A wondrous look overtakes his little face when she guides his hand to the right side of her lower belly, and she laughs warmly at the delighted squeal he lets out when he feels a tiny foot meet his hand.
“There’s a baby in there!”
“Yeah, buddy. That’s your friend. She’s so excited to meet you.”
“Is she gonna come out and play with me soon?”
“Few more months, little dude,” Marjan says, squishing Jonah’s cheeks in her hands. “You’re gonna be the best big cousin, huh?”
“Yesss!” Jonah sings, bouncing in her lap. “I’m gonna share my xy-lo-fone with her and we’re gonna make a really big salad!”

At Judd’s swearing in ceremony, Marjan and TK steal away for a quiet moment of reflection. Over food and fond memories, TK reminisces over everything this firehouse has meant to him for the past five years, and how a mistake that felt like the end of his world back in New York actually led him right here, exactly where he was always meant to be, with the people he was meant to be with.
