    Summary

In a place like Night City, Zanka thinks he’s accepted that greatness isn’t in the cards for him. He thinks he’s content with his share in life being poverty, odd jobs and barely scraping enough eddies to get by. But a series of bad decisions—including a bionic spine, an apeshit crazy gang of mercenaries, and a for-hire freak of a netrunner that can’t stop drawing his eye—has him seriously reconsidering.

There are no happy endings in Night City, but Zanka’s not looking for a happy ending. He’s looking to live.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I was in one of those moods where sleep wasn't going to come easily to me. Because I was thinking about what she could've said to me earlier, and how she was like a whole new metamorphosed person, and how the sheer potential in the years ahead felt like it could split my skull. And how her shoulders were beautiful.

So instead of sleeping, I laid awake, watching my butterfly breathe.

    Summary

“But you really, really, you like me, you…”

Jamie interrupted to correct me. “I’m in love with you, Sy."

His voice was cold. He said it like it was a condemnation.

No one could ever make me feel quite as low-down as Jamie did.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I closed my eyes and went to work at changing things around in my brain. It wasn't very hard, knowing what I did. The long, blonde hair that made people second-guess themselves. The librarian-style glasses. The bun she had put her hair up in today for the heat. See her answer of “boy” for the unenthusiastic concession it was, and shift my own read to “girl.”

There were so many pieces of potential there, for someone she hadn't been yet. She hadn't had the opportunity, when she had still been tied to the running momentum of being the second Jamie. But it was someone she easily could be.

    Summary

Five days before the world ends, Cleo is redrafting the outer parapets with graphite staining her fingers into an unflattering shade of grey, and Joe is reading the Odyssey aloud.

Four days after the world ends, Cleo wakes up.

    Bookmarker's Notes

All they can think is, This is too absurd not to be Joe’s fault. If this isn’t Joe’s fault, Cleo will eat her own arm.

Long-suffering Cleo, he calls them, in example. I sure am, Joe, they say. I sure am.

Poetry is one of the worst acts of violence you can inflict on a person, Joe replied. And, bonus!: it’s a lot easier to get away with attempted lyricism than attempted assault. You should try it sometime.

I think this is the Joe and Cleo characterization of all time. Essence was captured, as much as it ever can be.

    Summary

Zanka Nijiku was raised to win the Games.

In District 2, volunteering isn’t bravery, it’s expectation. And on the year of the 50th Hunger Games, a Quarter Quell that drags even past victors back into the arena, Zanka steps forward without hesitation.

But this isn’t the Games he trained for.

With returning victors and tributes far more dangerous than anything he prepared for, survival won’t come down to strength alone. It’s about perception, control, and knowing when to stay out of sight.

Especially when one of his biggest threats won’t let him.

Jabber Wonger is everything the arena creates and rewards. Violent, unpredictable, and obsessed with the hunt. And for reasons Zanka doesn’t understand, he’s taken an interest in him.

What starts as rivalry quickly twists into something far more dangerous.

Because in an arena designed to break people, control is everything.

And Zanka is starting to lose his.
