Jayce certainly knew what to look for. He had examined numerous artists’ renderings of yews, both single trees and groves. He was confident that he would recognize it, which made it all the more disheartening that he still hadn’t found any when the sun began to set and an uneasy chill descended over the trees. Just as he was beginning to think that the day’s search was a bust, that he’d have to turn back and try again tomorrow, he caught a whiff of a different fragrance on the cool breeze. Almost like pine, with a hint of citrus and musk—but not quite the same as other evergreen woods he worked with more commonly.
That had to mean the yew grove wasn’t far off. With renewed confidence, he made his way deeper into the woods, passing into an area dotted with ancient-looking oak trees. He marveled at their great size, at the curves of their strong boughs. Probably at least a few centuries old. The thought made him shiver, knowing that he was walking among witnesses to history.
