For many nights, all Conan could think about was running into that room with Ran, and seeing Heiji having pinned Kid to the wall, about to kiss him. For all these nights, Conan never realized why that scene kept replaying in his mind, what exactly the feelings running throughout his mind were . Why did he keep thinking about the Fairy’s Lip heist? It wasn’t exactly the most remarkable one, except for that scene… Was he thinking about it because he had more blackmail over Heiji now? Was that it?
Conan turned in his bed again, and heard Kogoro grumble in his sleep. Conan strained his ears to make out the words he said, and caught something like “Damn brat keeps moving around…” Conan sighed. Figures that Kogoro would know what was going on even while sound asleep. Getting up, he grabbed his phone and left to the bathroom.
Turning on the light, Conan waited for a few moments for his eyes to adjust before calling Heiji. The phone ran for a while before the Osakan detective picked up. “Kudo, it’s late. What da ya want?”
“Can’t sleep,” Conan muttered. “I keep thinking about that heist.”
“Hey!” Heiji’s voice came out panicked. “I didn’ know tha Kid was disguised as Kazuha! Don’ blame me!”
Conan sighed. “Alright, alright… But I can’t stop, Hattori. Do you know why?”
“Maybe ya like having leverage over me way too much?” Heiji suggested, sounding offended. As if he weren’t the one who just suggested that idea. Conan had thought about that, but he sure wasn’t going to tell Heiji. He couldn’t prove him right.
“That doesn’t explain why I keep dreaming about it,” Conan grumbled in reply.
“Ya-” Suddenly, Heiji started laughing, sounding almost hysterical. “Yer dreaming about it? Kudo!” The voice on the other side of the phone dissolved into laughter
“Oi oi, it isn’t funny!” Conan snapped.
That didn’t stop Heiji from laughing for a full minute. When he finally recovered, he suggested in a teasing voice, “Perhaps ya have fallen for Kid!”
“Don’t be stu-” Conan froze, thinking about his words. Have I… actually fallen for Kid? Feeling heat rising on his face, Conan replayed all his previous interactions with the white clad thief in his mind. I… think I care about him to an extent. But to have fallen from him? Hattori has to be messing with me!
“Don’t blank out on me now, Kudo!” Heiji exclaimed, snapping Conan’s attention back to the phone. “I was joking!”
“It’s not a very funny joke,” Conan snapped back. “Go back to sleep!” Quickly ending the call, Conan collapsed back on the wall and stared up at the ceiling. “He has to be messing with me,” he muttered. “There’s no way I’ve fallen for a criminal.”
Yet when he kept thinking about it, it just all made complete sense. Why he felt that fondness towards Kid, why he still hadn’t turned him in despite multiple chances to do so…
Burying his face in his hands, Conan let out a muffled scream.
“Aoko,” Kaito spoke up, drawing the attention of the girl next to him. Their teacher was currently in the bathroom, and the entire class had decided to talk to each other while they waited for her return. “Could you help me with something?”
“Sure,” Aoko replied, turning towards her friend. “What is it?”
Kaito paused, searching for his words. “Well, let’s say… someone almost kisses you.”
Aoko’s eyes widened. “Huh?! Someone tried to kiss you?!”
Kaito glared at her. “Hey, shut up! He thought I was his girlfriend!”
Aoko gave him a look. “I’m not even going to ask why. Continue on!”
“Well…” Kaito thought about what to say next for a moment. “He was about to kiss me, when suddenly these two other people broke in and interrupted, thankfully. But I keep thinking about it.” He tapped his fingers against his desk, unable to keep still. “And I keep thinking about the reaction of one of those people. I keep worrying, what if he thinks I like the guy who almost kissed me? What if he decides he doesn’t like me because of that event?”
“Who is this guy to you?” Aoko questioned, seeming a bit more interested now.
“He’s… a detective,” Kaito admitted.
“Hakuba-kun?” Aoko asked, looking back briefly at the British detective.
Kaito shook his head. “No, someone else. He’s a detective, and he always unravels my magic tricks, but that makes me excited, for some reason.” Kaito’s mind drifted off to Edogawa Conan, also known as Kudo Shinichi. He blushed a little as he continued. “I create extravagant tricks to see him smile as he reveals the truth behind them. He prefers to solve murders, but with my… shows, he likes to sit back and relax, watch the magic unfold and tell me his conclusion. I like making him happy.”
Aoko snickered a bit. “You sound like a lovestruck girl,” she noted. Kaito glared at her and opened his mouth to reply, but she interrupted before he could. “You are so in love with this guy, Bakaito. I can’t believe you haven’t noticed before!”
Kaito opened and closed his mouth, almost like a finny thing, then said defensively, “W-well! I haven’t exactly had the chance to think about that!”
Aoko grinned, and continued. “You were worried when he saw you about to get kissed by that other guy because you want him to be the one to kiss you! So go and find him and confess to him already!”
Kaito stared at her, thoughts running through his head as he had the chance to process the fact that yes, he was utterly in love with Kudo Shinichi. Kaito was the thief, but Shinichi was the one who had stolen his heart. He was the one who made said heart race whenever he caught his eyes. Aoko’s accusation of him being a lovestruck girl wasn’t too far off after all.
“I can’t,” Kaito finally choked out. “He doesn’t like me back that way, I think.”
“You think?” Aoko raised her eyebrow. “Ask him.”
“What if that destroys our relationship?” Kaito shot back at her. He blushed, thinking about Shinichi again. “I don’t want him to just drop out of my life!”
Aoko rolled her eyes and sighed. “Fine, procrastinate. If you need a wingman, I’m here.”
A wingman… Kaito thought grumpily. Yeah, you’ll totally be fine encouraging a romance between me and a supposed six year old boy.
“Don’t be idiotic,” Ai said, shoving the pill at Conan’s face. “For god’s sake, don’t let yourself be caught on television again. I already can’t believe I’m letting you do this.”
Conan grinned. “Thanks, Haibara!”
Ai sighed. “I know this heist won’t have any people from the news around, but you still need to be careful . If you get found out, the organization will immediately be after you. We can’t have another crisis like the one after Kyoto, okay?”
Conan smiled. “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything like that happen again!”
“I can’t trust you anymore,” Ai muttered, walking away. “Next thing I know, you’ll be doing a whole interview on live television where you’ll tell them everything about the organization.”
Conan raised an eyebrow. She thinks I’d do something as risky as that?
When Kid finally arrived in the room for the heist, he almost dropped his poker face completely. Because right there wasn’t the Kid Killer, but fucking Kudo Shinichi as a teenager.
“Kid!” Nakamori screamed when he spotted him, and Kid immediately slammed the poker face down and grinned. The heist had begun.
This time, Kid headed towards the basement instead of the roof as he usually did. He knew wherever he went, Shinichi would be right after him. Disguised as Ran and leaning against the wall, he waited for the detective to arrive, which he did moments later, that smug look right on his face.
“Do you really think I wouldn’t notice you’re not Ran?” He spoke up immediately. “The real Ran disappeared right before the heist began, and when she came back, the jewel had been taken, by you, Kaitou Kid. This time it looked as if you were practically begging to be caught.”
“Oh really, Tantei-kun?” Kid asked. “I thought you just had some sixth sense that told you exactly who I was disguised as.” He smirked as Shinichi glared at him.
“Well,” Shinichi said crossly, “I figured it out through my own deductive skill, I’ll have you know.”
Kid pushed himself away from the wall, smoothing down his skirt. “Here’s the real question though, detective. Why are you here as, well… yourself?”
Shinichi looked away, seeming a bit embarrassed. “I thought that today could be a… special occasion,” he admitted. “I’ve been thinking about this a lot since the Fairy’s Lip heist.” Kid froze as he said that, but Shinichi carried on. “I’ve become aware of some… feelings toward you,” he said slowly. “The way I think of you isn’t how I think of a rival, but rather, someone very special to me.” He sighed. “You know, this is really weird to be saying to you when you have Ran’s face on.”
Kid paused, then slowly, he took off the wig and mask. Standing before Shinichi with his real face, he glanced away, blushing. “Is that better?”
Shinichi’s eyes widened. “Wait, are you sure that’s okay?”
Kid - Kaito - smiled. “Yeah. I’m Kuroba Kaito, by the way. And… I’ve been having feelings for you too.”
Shinichi smiled back. “Well that’s a relief.” He chuckled, then continued. “I like you, Kaito.” He opened his arms, as if for a hug.
Kaito gladly accepted it, leaning in. “I like you too.”
