Michelangelo took in a sharp intake of breath as he woke up. This was new. He was sure that he and Hiroto had died together. But here he was. In terrible pain, but alive. Alive on a very familiar feeling bed, looking up at a very familiar looking ceiling. Tears of anguish pricked at his eyes. He was finally reunited with his family. His father, his brothers. They were all waiting for him. He saw them right there. And now he was alive—and they still weren’t.
April appeared by his side, giving him a bout of déjà vu. It was the same as when…the same as the last time he woke up in a hospital bed with April beside him. The night he failed to reunite with his family on his own terms, only to faint from the blood loss. But April was still here, and so was he. She embraced him, and they both cried at their victory and the people they lost to get there. The Foot Clan was gone, and the Hamato Clan remained. Broken in more ways than one, but they remained.
Casey had rushed back to the lair when she heard the news, rushing into the arms of her sensei. She was so glad that she didn’t lose him, too. Michelangelo couldn’t recall the last time he cried this many tears from happiness. Casey tried to give him back Splinter’s book, but he refused. It was hers now, the heir to Master Splinter’s teachings, a successor of the Hamato Clan. She felt like she didn’t deserve it, but Michelangelo assured her that she had already proven herself worthy.
It took Michelangelo a month to learn how to walk again. Soon, he was well enough to do his forms and some light sparring with Casey. Eventually, they even had races to the rooftops. It felt strange at first, to train like the old days—when he and his brothers were teenagers. Before Raphael and Karai’s battle. Before Raphael…
Michelangelo accepted the cards that he was dealt. With his own blood, sweat and tears he paid it back. He was free from the vendetta now. He finally knew peace. He no longer saw his brothers. One might say that that’s a good thing. But he never knew how lonely it got without their voices. Then on a particular somber evening, Casey came home with four baby turtles, freshly mutated. No one asked her if she found them that way, or if she exposed them to the mutagen herself. He told himself it was the former, because Casey-Marie wouldn't do that to them. To him. Right?
He was a granduncle now. A grunkle, so to speak. Grunkle Michelangelo. He liked the name more than he’d like to admit. They were too young to hold a proper conversation with, but he enjoyed their company. They liked to climb on him and he was big enough to carry all four at once.
Michelangelo decided to clean up around the lair, to make it more baby turtle proof. It wasn’t necessary but it gave him something to do. And then he noticed it. In a box of Donatello’s old dusty tech was an outdated laptop. April knew what was on it, just the basic OS and a singular messaging application. But the last time she checked it, Donatello hadn’t contacted anyone yet and the server he made was barren. Now maybe Michelangelo was feeling nostalgic, but he opened the laptop to see what his brother was up to.
