Summary:

After a head injury, Mulder can't remember who he is or anything about his life. Relying on the Lone Gunmen to fill him in may have not been the best idea. Multi-chapter story.

Notes:

Sorry it’s been so long since I last updated it! I don’t really have an excuse but here’s chapter 3 that I’d had half done in my drafts for way too long!

Chapter Text

She was walking through the door of her apartment when the phone rang. Scully sighed, knowing the rest of her groceries still needed to be brought in. All the same, she crossed the room and picked up the phone.

“Hello?”

“Hello, may I please speak to a Miss Dana Scully?” asked the voice on the phone.

“This is she.”

“I’m calling on behalf of George Washington University Hospital,” Scully’s right eyebrow shot up. “A Mr. Fox Mulder was found in Meridian Hill Park unconscious today. You’re his emergency contact.” She could barely find her voice.

“Is—is he okay? Has he regained consciousness?”

“He seems to be fine. He’s getting fluids and doesn’t appear to be injured. We’re doing some tests now. Unless the tests come back to show something abnormal is in his system, he’ll have to tell us how he ended up in this condition himself when he wakes up.”

“Thank you. I’m on my way now.”

Scully sped down the hall she resided and ran down the stairs. She quickly made her way out the building and through the parking lot. She pulled her car door open in a rush. Sitting down, she turned on the ignition and put the car in drive in a single motion, speeding to the hospital.

She’d done this too many times before, but it never got easier. Less frightening. She really didn’t know how she could keep going on like this. Or how he could go on without it.

She arrived at the hospital and saw to it that she spoke to his doctor right away. His physician was an older woman with dark hair and tan skin. She didn’t have much more to report than what had already been said over the phone. The only new information was the results of his drug test, which came back clean. This relieved her but also made the situation all the more puzzling.

At last, she made it to Mulder’s room. He rested peacefully in his bed, while an IV ran in his arm.

She sat down and picked up his hand to hold. Scully watched over him until exhaustion took the better of her and her head gradually fell forward. Leaving her to sleep as the hospital machinery buzzed around them.

With a squeeze of her hand, she jolted awake. Mulder was awake and staring curiously at her.

“Mulder. How are you?” she asked as she placed her other hand on top of their already intertwined pair and leaned a little closer. She was so relieved. He glanced at their hands and then back up at her. But she was already gazing back at him, studying him like the doctor she was.

“I feel okay.”

“What happened? What do you remember?”

“I don’t remember anything.”

What’s the last thing you can recall?”

His eyebrows furrowed and he cut his gaze to the left. Obviously trying hard to focus.

“I can’t remember anything, at all,” he paused, “Who are you?”

Scully’s shoulders dropped and her head tilted.

“Don’t play. This isn’t funny.” She placed the back of her hand against his forehead, checking his temperature. He let out a frustrated sigh.

“I’m telling you. I can’t remember a thing. I swear.” Scully met his eye. From his tone alone she knew he was serious.

He had amnesia.
