Keith really wasn’t sure how he had ended up in this situation. Him, Krolia, Romelle, Kosmo (he’d grown to like that name for his wolf) Pidge, Hunk, Allura, Coran, and Lance were all at a hotel-like place. Technically, Kosmo wasn’t supposed to be there because it was a no-animal place, but being a cosmic wolf who could teleport, that didn’t really matter. On their trip to Earth, they needed to stop at a planet to get supplies. They were only going to be there for one night. Normally, they would’ve just stayed in the castle, but for some reason (cough cough), Pidge had suggested that they stay at some hotel on the planet. She’d booked the rooms and told everyone who they’d be sharing with.
“Okay, all the rooms have enough space and beds to accompany the people staying there. Also, there’s only one bathroom in each room, so you guys are gonna have to share. Kosmo, you can go wherever you’d like. I know you can teleport, but don’t get caught by any of the staff, because then there’ll be a whole scene. Allura, Coran, and Romelle, you guys will be in one room. Shiro and Krolia, you’ll be in another. Hunk, you and I will be sharing a room. And finally, Keith and Lance, you guys will be sharing a room.” When she said that, she wiggled her eyebrows not-so-subtly at the two of them. Keith chose to ignore that. Kosmo was looking at him, and it seemed like he was saying, Ha, Pidge knows what she’s doing. Keith chose to ignore that, too.
They all went to their rooms, ready to crash for the night. Keith was pretty tired, so he couldn’t wait to curl up on his bed. However, when Keith and Lance got to their room, they saw something quite…interesting.
The room itself was fine. There was a window and a bathroom. However, in the middle of the room, there was only one bed. One.
And to think Keith had really believed that Pidge wasn’t pulling anything.
To be fair, it was a queen bed. They wouldn’t be smooshed up against each other, but still.
“PIDGE!” Keith was going to kill Pidge.
She popped her head into their room, the complete picture of innocence. “Yeah?”
Lance spoke up this time. “Pidge, remember when you said there would be enough space and beds for everyone in the room? Well, I hate to break it to you, but there’s only one bed here.”
Pidge had the audacity to keep the innocent look on her face. “But, Lance, that is enough space for everyone in the room.” And before either of them could fully process what she had said, she flashed them a smirk and disappeared.
Keith could feel his face heating up, so he quickly said, “I’m gonna get ready for bed,” before he went to the bathroom. He barely stopped himself from sprinting.
Maybe he should throw Pidge out into space. Or would that be too merciful?
He quickly got ready for bed and left the bathroom. Lance went in, and after Lance closed the door, Keith just stood there for a moment. How was he going to handle this? Sleeping in the same room as Lance would already be difficult, let alone sleeping in the same bed. He flopped on the bed and thought about all the ways he could kill Pidge.
He heard the bathroom door open. “Hey, move over. I need to sleep, too, you know.” Keith lifted his head and turned towards Lance, and was this just wishful thinking, or did he see a small blush on Lance’s face?
For dramatic effect, and because he was rethinking his life choices (becoming friends with Pidge), he groaned and let his head fall back down.
“Oh, come on, mullet,” Lance whined. Keith heard footsteps, then he felt hands shoving him to one side of the bed. A weight settled on the other side.
Keith finally decided to stop his performance and got under the blanket. He turned towards the wall and pointedly ignored the fact that Lance was behind him.
“Good night, Keith.”
Whoa. That sounded sincere. Nope, Keith was definitely hearing things. “G’night, Lance.”
Surprisingly, he was able to fall asleep fairly quickly.
~~~
Keith was a pretty light sleeper, so he woke up when he felt something moving. He slowly blinked his eyes open. It was still dark outside. Abruptly, he remembered that he and Lance were sharing a bed. He was facing Lance, and he realized what was moving.
Lance was shivering. His eyebrows were scrunched up, and he looked like he was muttering something, but Keith couldn’t tell what. Keith could tell Lance was having some sort of nightmare, but he was never good at comforting people, so he didn’t know what to do. He decided on quietly saying Lance’s name until he woke up.
Lance woke up after a few tries. His eyes flew open, and it looked like he was trying to gather his surroundings. Finally, he focused on Keith, and he seemed to remember where he was.
He looked a little embarrassed, but Keith asked, “You okay?”
He hesitated for a second, but then nodded. He looked like he was already falling back asleep. “Sorry.”
Sorry? Why was he sorry? “Don’t be sorry, Lance. Good night.”
They both fell asleep again.
~~~
Throughout the night, Lance woke up three more times, shivering and muttering like before. Keith would do the same thing: wake him up, ask him if he was okay, then go back to sleep. Each time he got more and more worried for Lance, but he didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know if Lance would get any sleep at this point.
When Lance woke up for the fifth time, Keith decided to do something different. He still didn’t know what he should do, but he needed to try something.
Lance was about to close his eyes, but he saw Keith looking at him and didn’t. “Are you okay?” he asked, and why was he asking?
Keith contemplated for a moment longer, then asked, “Do you…uh…want a hug?” He was inviting Lance to cuddle. Why? He had no idea, but it felt right.
Lance looked confused, and a little shocked. Eventually, though, he started inching closer to Keith. He moved cautiously at first, like he thought he misunderstood, but when Keith didn’t show any signs of discomfort, he came closer.
Lance wrapped his arms around Keith and buried his face in Keith’s chest. Keith heart was beating out of his chest and he was pretty sure that Lance would notice. Lance didn’t say anything, though. He relaxed in Keith’s arms, and after a few minutes, Keith heard his breathing even out. He smiled a little and placed his chin on Lance’s hair.
“Good night, Lance.” Maybe Keith wouldn’t kill Pidge after all.
~~~
“So, I see you had a good night.”
Keith’s eyes fluttered open, but he was still half asleep. There was light streaming in through the window. He turned his head to find the source of the voice, but froze when he found it.
Pidge was standing there with a grin on her face, but it wasn’t just Pidge. No, the whole rest of the crew was there. They were all wearing matching grins. Keith even saw a smile on Kosmo’s face (the most expressive wolf ever, what the hell).
“…I hate you all,” he muttered, and buried his face in Lance’s hair.
“Aw, but Keith, you look so comfortable,” Pidge said, and Keith could hear the smirk in her voice. He just flipped her off.
He changed his mind. Keith was definitely going to kill Pidge.
