Chapter 1: Begin Anew
Summary:
The Triple Goddess gives Arthur, Morgana, and Merlin a second chance and each a single wish as they are sent back in time to be born anew and set things right. However, each lose their memories from their lives before their new second time round births. Silent as the grave, all three are feared to not be long for this world as they refuse to cry. Arthur and Merlin are both born female due to Morgana's wish for a family and those she could trust completely. Arthur is not only born female due to Morgana's wish but also as a vampire due to her own to have her mother, ensuring the Ban on Magic. Merlin's wish, however, ensures only Excalibur alone exists as the sword burnished in dragon fire.
Arthur and Morgana witness an immediate change to events due to Arthur's wish as Ygraine claims Morgana not only as a Pendragon but also as Princess of Camelot, challenging anyone to dare to disrespect the poor girl while holding it against Uther alone for having a bastard child.
Merlin's magic is revealed to Will and thus her franticly afraid mother sends her to Camelot.
Notes:
The first narration bit is done by The Great Dragon, Kilgharrah as normal from the show's first episode. The second narration bit is done by The Triple Goddess which also serves as a recap of the canonical ending of Merlin (Original Universe) or old timeline setting up the first three paragraphs or scenes before the reset of the timeline creating the new timeline or AU (Alternate Universe) bit. Enjoy this little and not so little twisted take on Merlin.

The Silentborn Sisterhood
Chapter 1
Begin Anew
No young man no matter how great, can know their destiny. They cannot glimpse their part in the great story that is about to unfold. Like everyone, they must live and learn. And so will be for the young warlock arriving at the gates of Camelot. A boy that will in time father a legend. His name: Merlin.
No matter how vital one's destiny is, sometimes the foretold extinction cannot be prevented. And so, it was for Merlin who failed to entrust his most vital secret to King Arthur until Arthur lay dying in his arms. Thus, sending Arthur's body into the Lake of Avalon, Excalibur in hand to recover from the wound from the sword forged by Aithusa's breath at Morgana's command. However, such acts have consequences. Without Arthur revoking the Ban on Magic, Magic became extinct to the world and Merlin waiting for centuries found himself slipping from the world by the hand of The Triple Goddess who took him into Avalon. Upon the three who shaped the demise of magic, she would give another chance. For magic to thrive once more, Arthur, Merlin, and Morgana would be sent back, each given a single wish to ensure that magic wouldn't perish this time. For only the Once and Future King, The World's Greatest Sorcerer, and The High Priestess of the Triple Goddess can save magic. Their names: Arthur, Merlin and Morgana, the sisters of The Silentborn Sisterhood.
Arthur felt as though he were floating. He hadn't felt this good since... Since years before he had become King of Camelot. The last time he felt genuinely happy was his wedding day to Guinevere and even then, he didn't feel completely happy. He hadn't felt fine since his father's death and Morgana' betrayal.
But this wasn't like anything he had felt before. There was nothing but pure serenity around him. Arthur opened his eyes to find himself lying on top of the water of the Lake of Avalon off the shore from Avalon itself.
Arthur rose looking around only to find three women standing behind him.
Welcome, King Arthur.
They said in unison. Their very being shock Arthur to his core, he didn't need magic to know that these three women were beyond even Merlin's... How could he have forgotten the last thing Merlin had told him. Merlin was a sorcerer, not just any sorcerer, but his sorcerer. He hadn't taken it well when he had first learned about it. No wonder Merlin had kept the truth from him.
Arthur didn't know whether to approach the three women or flee as best he could.
And where would you flee to?
They said. Arthur's shock was very evident upon his face. They reached out an arm each towards him, Come, greet The Triple Goddess you had dismissed as falsehood.
Arthur approached slowly uncertain of whether it was the wisest choice.
I am sorry I shouldn't have...
Arthur tumbled over his words before The Triple Goddess held up their hands (one each) to stop him.
Your choice was obvious, Merlin should never have kept quiet.
The Triple Goddess spoke, Had he opened up, you saw how your anger dissipated over time. The two of you are two sides to the same coin, or more correctly, Soul Mates. The Ban on Magic was always meant to happen, just as you were meant to be born by it, so was Merlin, all that magic with nowhere to go, our champion was finally ready to be released into the world. For Merlin is magic.
You're saying that I was always going to...
Arthur said before being stopped again.
Your actions were the byproduct of another, two others.
The Triple Goddess said, Both Merlin's silence about being a Warlock, and by your sister's betrayal, caused not by Merlin alone, but by Kilgharrah's misguided advise, which caused more harm than help. Kilgharrah advised Merlin to not only turn in Mordred, which both he and you passed my test by sparing him, but also guided Merlin to kill Morgana. Instead of telling Morgana the truth and giving her, her choice on whether to condemn magic or save it, he took that choice away and magic was condemned by both Merlin and Morgana. You were not shown enough to know the truth from your father's blinded by anger and grief ridden words.
The three women sighed before speaking again, I am sending the three of you back to the beginning, your beginnings to be exact, each of you will start your lives anew to amend your actions. Yes, you, Merlin, and Morgana each must save magic from the extinction the three of you condemned it to. You all however will not have your memories intact, however, you will each bear instinctual guidance to avoid making the same mistakes with each other again. In time you all will recover your full memories, until then, you will only have fragments of them appear, Morgana being a seer will witness her dark destiny as a warning upon her.
Why not allow us to keep our memories?
Arthur asked.
Because of the harm upon Morgana, she would sooner murder Merlin than welcome his help and friendship again.
The Triple Goddess answered, No, you three are better off recovering them while redeeming yourselves. I will grant each of you a single wish. This can be anything from a minor alteration to something that greatly alters your very lives.
Arthur thought long and hard on this, well as hard as he could. He thought how he could have it so that Mordred would never be his death (he doubted this would be permitted to even be his wish), he thought he could wish that he would never share his father's opinion on magic. But regardless of which thought came into his head, he had already made his choice. In Avalon Arthur had spent time with the one person he knew he could never live without again in his life, especially if he had to go through his own life all over again.
I wish my mother, Ygraine de Bois, doesn't have to die for me.
Arthur stated.
That alone makes me consider allowing you to have wished for Mordred to never be your prophesied death.
The Triple Goddess said, Not even we can circumvent the rule, a life for a life. However, there are loopholes. First, because we can speak with you, Morgana, and Merlin at the same time, Morgana's wish which we will not tell you want it is, as that is for her to say once she remembers it, and if she chooses to tell you. Morgana was given a choice, she chose to remain female. You and Merlin however may do better in getting along with her as females yourselves. We will not tell you Merlin's choice as Merlin won't be told yours. You could remain male or choose to be female; this will not change your name of course let alone you being the Once and Future King.
Of course, Morgana would have made a wish that would result in him becoming a woman. Arthur bemoaned this, on one hand he could remain, but would that go over well with Morgana, it didn't exactly go badly with her in the first place. However, Arthur thought about how Morgana had turned on him, he had learned it was because she thought Morgause was her sister. Morgana had learned too late that she and he were also half-siblings.
Arthur knew his choice and hoped he wouldn't regret it. He nodded to The Triple Goddess, For Morgana, I choose to become female.
The Triple Goddess smiled on all three of their faces, A wise choice my dear girl.
They then gestured to Arthur's body.
Arthur looked down and nearly jumped out of his, now her, skin. She was staring at what she thought was Ygraine de Bois' reflection. She only realized after much staring at her mother's reflection mimicking her actions to realize that it was her own reflection. Bending down to see herself she realized how pale she was. It was during her wide grin that she noticed them, two sets of fangs protruding from her mouth and unfortunately biting her tongue and cheeks.
OW!
Arthur yelped glaring at The Triple Goddess, What did you do to me?
That, Arthur, is the loophole.
The Triple Goddess said, For your mother to live, you must not have life to be gained from a life lost. Along with ensuring that the ban on magic comes to pass, for it cannot be prevented, you must be born, a vampire.
Arthur was shocked. She wouldn't be alive then. But her mother would, so much would change... Was it truly worth becoming a monster?
Do not worry, Arthur.
The Triple Goddess said looking down at the shocked and scared girl, We have blessed you. You are a day walking vampire. You will not succumb to your vampiric instincts nor unwillingly drain anyone of all their blood because of them, let alone spread your vampirism unless you desire to. However, you will still need to drink blood, should you go to long without doing so, your instincts will cause you to seek out fresh blood from a living being, preferably human. But you won't kill anyone from drinking too much unless you choose to. Additionally, you not only with have enhanced strength beyond anything you could have accomplished as a normal human male, but also great speed rivaled only by time manipulation. Of course, you will have unnaturally good charm that can allow you to control some people, only those with strong will or strong mental fortitude could resist or break free of you charming self, we are immune. Due to this, you are a magical creature allowing you to kill such creatures born of magic with your bare hands, fangs, or any weapon in your hands that can only be killed by magic. Though let Lancelot handle the Griffin.
Doubt I'd remember that or being able to simply kill the griffin regardless of my weapon.
Arthur joked.
So, you are accepting of the condition that you will be cursed in order to allow your mother to live?
The Triple Goddess enquired.
Arthur attempted to sigh before realizing she couldn't breath, in fact she hadn't been breathing since she had turned female. She then realized she didn't need to breath. She got up and nodded, Yes, if it allows me to spare my mother's life and assuming I'll still have to pretend to be male for the sake of appearances due to father's insistence on a Pendragon sitting on the throne and it not being given to another through marriage. I'm willing to become a monster.
Who said you would become a monster.
The Triple Goddess said leaning in, And one more thing. Leave Gwen to Lancelot. You may find yourself drawn to another, after all, just because your are now female doesn't mean your attractions changed.
Before Arthur could ask what that meant she was gone from the Lake of Avalon.
Morgana awoke scrabbling to check the wound she had received from Merlin and to her horror, Excalibur. Only there was no wound.
My High Priestess, welcome to the Lake of Avalon.
The Triple Goddess said arms outstretched in a welcoming embrace to their High Priestess.
Morgana turned and bowed low forehead touching the water beneath her.
Oh, Triple Goddess, I beseech you...
She began.
Do not finish that.
The Triple Goddess snapped, I did not draw you here after all these centuries just so you could beseech me for petty revenge upon my champion and your brother.
Morgana was confused and then shocked as their words finally sank in, Merlin was your champion?
Is our champion.
The Triple Goddess corrected, Unlike you and Arthur, Merlin was never mortal. You alone spent these past centuries dead to all while Arthur spent them in Avalon after his body was sent there by Merlin placing it into the Lake of Avalon. Merlin has spent these centuries waiting for Arthur to return from the Lake. But this new era is not one that a King can return to let alone rule when kings have no power anymore. No, you, Merlin, and Arthur must amend your actions by being sent back to your individual beginnings in the world, from birth.
Forgive me, but what is stopping me from taking my revenge once I meet them?
Morgana inquired.
I did not say you would be sent back, with your memories intact.
The Triple Goddess explained, Out of fairness to you, all three of you will not have your memories, merely instinctual memories that may cause you and Merlin to mistrust each other, but none of you will have any reason to harm the other. Eventually you all will recover your memories by then you should be beyond internal conflict between each other.
But I was trying to liberate magic.
Morgana stated.
But you didn't.
The Triple Goddess scolded, You were queen of Camelot for a short while and you did nothing about the ban. No, nor was it Merlin who would lift the ban. Only Arthur could, but due to not only your betrayal, but also Merlin's silence about his own magic to Arthur until it was too late due to the mortal wound from the sword that should never have been.
The sword Morgana had made with Aithusa's breath appeared in their hands. Then their magic poured into it causing the blade the crumble and become dust. This showcased that The Triple Goddess alone could unmake that which could not be unmade.
Just as that should never have been, so should Excalibur be wielded by Arthur and Arthur alone.
The Triple Goddess stated, Yet, it was Merlin who primarily wielded Excalibur, and he did not need it to slay you. No, Arthur's death by Mordred's hand was never made inevitable because of you, but because of his denouncement of me and keeping the ban. You did not need to create another.
So, if only Arthur could, why did he denounce you and keep the ban?
Morgana inquired. The Triple Goddess had just told her that most of what she had fought for could only be accomplished by another.
Arthur was never fully shown the good magic could do by the right people.
The Triple Goddess said, He wasn't given a reason to revoke the ban. However, even with that, Merlin keeping silent about being a sorcerer, more correctly a warlock, and your betrayal, kept Arthur believing his father was right all along. Only when he was dying did he learn the truth from Merlin and witness the good magic could do, unfortunately, nothing Merlin could do could save his life. Thus, Merlin sent Arthur into Avalon and waited for centuries for a return that could never happen.
Morgana was surprised more by the fact that she wasn't lashing out and denying everything than by the fact that magic's extinction was not only her fault but also Merlin's and Arthur's. Perhaps it was the presence of The Triple Goddess themselves that allowed her such peace of mind to process all of this. It ended up sounding more like it was mostly Merlin's fault than either herself or Arthur but no one was free of the fate of magic on whole.
Morgana thought back to Arthur and realized something; she had a brother that whole time and she betrayed him for what? It slowly dawned on her that Morgause never was truly a sister to her.
You, like Arthur and Merlin, will receive from me, a single wish that I will grant you. You won't remember it until its effect is witnessed by you.
The Triple Goddess explained, It can be anything, from simple irrelevance to completely altering your very life. However, there are some wishes I will not grant. Mordred's destiny is among them, for he may yet never become Arthur's demise should you succeed. Nor will I alter Morgause's upbringing due to Nimueh raising her, which is vital to you becoming my High Priestess. Anything you wish for, if I won't grant it, you may choose another. I am able to speak with you, Arthur, and Merlin at the same time, but I will not reveal your wishes to each other unless one of yours affects the others as well, and I will be vague to prevent the wish from being known without your consent.
Morgana thought hard. She could wish for anything within reason. But despite her desire for revenge upon Merlin, she couldn't use her wish to harm him. No, she thought about the one thing she wanted most, what truly drove her to Morgause in the first place. Her family.
I, I want my wish to be, to be for me.
Morgana began, I just want my family... And to have those who I can trust, close to me. I can't end up alone, ever again...
The Triple Goddess embraced Morgana and held her close to them, Even without such a wish, you would have your family. But we can only grant you one of that and your trust issues could be problematic down the line, especially towards Merlin who should have never betrayed you. We can grant your wish. However, there is an important fact concerning trust. Given that this wish is more impactful towards your relationships with Arthur and Merlin, we will give you a choice. You can choose male or remain female. Choosing male will affect your name but you may have a better bond with your half-brother and Merlin.
Morgana looked as though the question and choice was absurd. Before thinking about it. If she was male her life would be easier, but she couldn't stand the idea of being a man. She knew exactly who she was in terms of such a question, Female, I rather wouldn't give that up even for never having to deal with my bleeds ever again.
So be it.
The Triple Goddess said, I will ask both Arthur and Merlin the same question. Perhaps they might heed my advice, as I believe the three of you would do best as the same sex. Perhaps even better as all women.
Morgana laughed, Oh, seeing Arthur as a girl would make this all worth doing everything over.
You may yet.
The Triple Goddess said, Now, try and stay on the right side this time.
Morgana was going to ask what that meant when suddenly she was gone from the Lake of Avalon.
Merlin did not remember crossing over into Avalon, nor how he was standing on the still surface of the Lake of Avalon. He did however feel the presence of The Triple Goddess. Turning towards them he bowed low.
Your wait is over, Emerys.
The Triple Goddess said, However, Arthur will not return to this modern world.
What do you mean?
Merlin asked surprised by the fact that he sounded as young as he had been when he had sent Arthur to Avalon.
This modern age has no place for kings.
The Triple Goddess explained, No, you, Arthur and Morgana will be sent back to relive your lives. Yes, Morgana as well. Kilgharrah should never have told you to kill her. Not only did your silence to Arthur about you being a Warlock give him no reason to lift the ban, but your attempt on Morgana's life led her to betray her brother and her fall. No, she should have stayed with you. Not every destiny is set in stone, some are self-fulfilling prophecies like Morgana becoming your opposite.
So, she could have remained good.
Merlin mused to himself.
That is a matter of perspective.
The Triple Goddess said, Though in the matter of what did occur, yes, she could have. I am speaking with her and Arthur as I am speaking to you. You however will receive a shorter explanation. As I've said, you three are to be sent back to relieve your lives, from birth, without your memories. This is in fairness to Morgana who would seek revenge upon you if she retained her memories, condemning magic to extinction again. No, you three will have instinctual memories and will only recover your memories during events that transpire similarly to how that had in your first time around. This however won't be remembered in the same regard. But the three of you will be granted a single wish by me. Within reason. I will not ensure Mordred never becomes Arthur's demise, and I have already destroyed the sword Morgana had forged for Mordred, I alone can unmake that which cannot be unmade and that sword should never have been made in the first place. Your wish can be anything from minor alteration to something that could change much of the world you grew up in completely.
Merlin thought hard about this. There was so much he could do with this wish, but he only had one. He could not risk another sword like Excalibur being made.
I wish that Excalibur be alone among such swords of myth.
Merlin proclaimed, So that no dragon could be used to make another. Let Excalibur alone be such a sword to never again be replicated regardless of who holds such power to do so.
A wise wish.
The Triple Goddess said, However, that means that the Excalibur you made before this reset of your lives must be brought into this new timeline as Kilgharrah will be unable to make it in the new. Also, despite you losing your memories, I will be giving you one to retain. Do not ever again wield Excalibur yourself, it was made for Arthur alone to do good with it and should remain that way. You have no need for such a blade. Now, there is one more thing. Morgana's wish, which I will not reveal as these wishes are private and you'll remember them once they become relevant to each of you individually, and only you can divulge them to each other, but I give you the choice to remain male or become female in this second chance. I give this advice that you choose to be female to allow you, Arthur, and Morgana to have a better relationship with each other, as Morgana choose to remain female.
Merlin knew Morgana wouldn't want to try life as the opposite sex, despite the hardships women faced in that era. Merlin hadn't exactly remained male for all these centuries anyways so, despite how much harder it would be for him, he figured he had spent long enough as a man, especially since he recalled being female when he suddenly awoke here.
Female, I've kind of grown used to it these past few years.
Merlin said.
Then my champion, may you at least be more open to Arthur about your magic.
The Triple Goddess said to the now female Merlin who looked exactly like the female version of her seventeen-year-old self when she first arrived at Camelot.
Merlin was admiring her appearance via her reflection in the water when The Triple Goddess said, Good luck.
And Merlin was gone from the Lake of Avalon.
Queen Ygraine's screams could be heard throughout the castle of Camelot as she was both in pain from childbirth and in the process of pushing her unborn child out of her.
Uther remained by her side at his own insistence, and this turned out to be a good thing as his wife's left hand was clutching his hands tightly as though the pain, she was going through was all his fault. Which in truth it was. Ygraine was barren and Uther had gone to the High Priestess Nimueh for a means of having a child with his wife through magic. Ygraine had been against this and had considered having Uther have an affair for the sake of having an heir to the throne, but Uther had already done both. So, here she was after seven months (two too early for this) in the process of birthing the rightful heir to the throne, knowing she would die because of the spell that allowed this was bound by a sacred rule: A life for a life.
With one final strenuous push, the baby was born. Ygraine went limb from the exertion of childbirth and stopped breathing, while the midwives and nursemaids realized that the child wasn't crying.
Everyone was a silent as the grave as they realized the king had lost both wife and child in that moment.
The silence was suddenly broken as Ygraine gasped slipping her hand from her husband's and coughed as air filled her lungs once more. Everyone was so overcome with relief that none realized the realized that the nursemaid doing everything she could to get the newborn to cry wasn't working. Save Ygraine.
Give me my child.
Ygraine said holding her arms out for her newborn. The nursemaid who had been trying to get the child to make noise turned and handed the queen her baby.
The newborn who was silent and still suddenly started squirming but remained silent. Ygraine held her baby who despite moving seemed to adjust for comfort keeping the movements as though as reassurance they would live.
Ygraine holding her newborn was the first to check her own child due to the nursemaid being more concerned with the child's silence. She looked up at Uther with a well-practiced forced smile on her face, All that waiting, suffering, and worry, for a prince.
Uther's face lit up and both king and queen were congratulated. Ygraine however quickly realized something problematic. Uther leaned down to see his newborn son more closely.
After all that trouble, Camelot finally has a prince, Prince Arthur.
Uther said.
Ygraine whisper into Uther's ear, Well, Arthur's not breathing yet he's still moving.
Uther snapped back up before turning to the nursemaids and midwives, Out. Out all of you! And get me Gaius!
No one dared to argue given the tone of his command.
When alone Ygraine finally spoke the truth, All of that trouble for a daughter and it isn't over yet.
What do you mean daughter?
Uther turned growling out the last word.
Exactly what I said,
Ygraine said trying to lift herself up. She glared at Uther, I know fully well you wouldn't trust any but your own blood on the throne. I know how far you would go to make sure no one challenges this. So, I may of lied to ensure that Arthur, as terrible a name that is for a girl, yet a good fitting name for a king, would be able to prove herself to be the rightful heir for the throne. Even if that means she'll live a lie for most of her life. But I'm more concerned we may lose our child!
By the time Gaius reached the chamber where the king and queen were, he realized they had had a heated argument that seemed to have only recently ended.
I've heard the good news, your majesties. Your son...
Gaius said upon seeing them.
Just take a look and find out what's wrong with her.
Uther said very irritated.
Gaius raised his eyebrow at that before looking over the queen.
Despite the fact that the king went to Nimueh for a spell that could allow me a barren woman to bear a child
Ygraine said directing the latter bit towards Uther causing another eyebrow raise from Gaius, It's our newborn daughter who you are to take a look at. She isn't breathing and is as silent as the grave, yet she moves constantly.
Gaius looked at the newborn Arthur and after Ygraine handed her over to him, Arthur's squirming became more proactive having left her mother's arms.
Shh, shh, shh, I just need to check you over.
Gaius said trying to get the squirming baby to still form a moment. Arthur didn't stop but her movements were less erratic allowing for Gaius to look her over. Gaius did indeed see that the queen did give birth to a girl and noticed that she wasn't breathing either.
Perhaps the rest would be better done in my chambers.
Gaius advised.
Uther slammed the door to the physician's chambers open allowing Gaius to enter still holding Arthur in his arms while Ygraine still weak from labor was holding on to her husband as he helped her in.
Gaius set Arthur down on the cot pillow wrapped in Uther's cape before turning to the king and queen.
What do you mean, Nimueh performed a spell to allow you to bear a child?
Gaius asked.
Uther did not look like explaining, so Ygraine did from what she got out from him, I was against it, preferring an affair to at least have an heir to the throne, but he went behind my back and had Nimueh do something with her magic that falls under the rules 'a life for a life' and after than he got me pregnant.
Gaius' expression become that of horrified shock. That put both Uther and Ygraine on edge.
You understand what that rule means, don't you?
Gaius said.
Of course.
Uther said.
Yes, a life must be lost for the life gained.
Ygraine said. It was difficult to come across this rule of magic unless you actively sought out any magic bound by this rule.
Precisely, your majesties.
Gaius confirmed, However, magic bound by such a rule can only have three types of means of claiming the life. It exists to keep balance. The life lost must either be a willing sacrifice, or a victim of the desirer, not the performer of that magic unless the performer is the desirer. Otherwise, the closest person to the one desiring such magic will die for the life gained. So, your majesty, I take it you understand your situation.
I should have died.
Ygraine stated, In fact I think I did die, briefly, everything went dark then I was gasping for air as I was opening my eyes.
The fact that you still live, my queen, means that your daughter does not.
Gaius revealed, Very few could perform any magic bound by that single rule, fewer capable of creating life instead of restoring it. Nimueh alone holds such power, not only in granting you a child, but also in raising the dead. However, what perplexes me is the fact that your newborn daughter shouldn't have perished upon her birth.
What are you saying.
Uther inquired.
Considering Arthur's current situation, you daughter is cursed.
Gaius said opening a book on magical creatures created by magic, She is among the dead. Like a Shade or a Wraith. The two differ as shades remember nothing and are resistant to magic and bound by the sorcerer who created them. Wraiths unlike shades, require their original bodies, and nothing short of the completion of their mission of revenge can stop them. However, Arthur doesn't appear to be either. She is dead and isn't a decayed body like a wraith, nor would she have died... No, it can't be...
Gaius abandoned the book leaving it open to a page on undead from his collection and went to another book on foreign magic from beyond the sea. He flipped it over right when Arthur finally opened her eyes. Upon seeing her mother alive, Arthur cooed softly.
Gaius flipped through the pages until he reached the last entry on undead creatures from it. There in bold lettering was the name of the most powerful undead creature of all: Vampire
What is that?
Uther asked seeing the entry upside down. There was barely anything in it.
Vampire. It is an undead creature that is the closest to a living creature due to primarily infecting a human with vampirism by draining them of blood, which is their primary sustenance. Vampires require the life energy or blood of a living creature for sustenance unlike us humans who require food and drink, however, a vampire can still consume food and drink despite having no need of it. Vampires do not breath nor have a heartbeat unless they have consumed blood from their victim which doesn't need to be human blood, but human blood does strengthen them greatly. Vampires are known to primarily hold positions of the higher classes, such as nobility or royalty with their king being Count Dracula the ruler of a small country bordering its larger counterpart. Vampires are nocturnal creatures and due to their lacking need to breath and heartbeat are considered to be among the undead, despite being immortal. Vampires do not decay like undead do. Vampires require blood every few days however, those that indulge in the increase of power from drinking human blood tend to drink daily or more correctly nightly. Wraiths and Shades are considered inferior to them as all vampires are capable to returning after suffering a lethal blow and are not servants to any but a stronger vampire and only server sorcerers of great power, some being sorcerers themselves. Vampires are immune to all magic bound by the rule a life for a life never losing their own 'life' but neither benefitting from magic bound by that rule.
Gaius explained, I'm afraid as to their strengths and weaknesses, we know nothing. All of this was collected by the only person to return from these foreign lands and they hadn't even met any of those vampires, the one who discovered this Count Dracula barely managed to name him before the Count killed the man. And that man died giving his records to another researcher who discovered that some vampires don't discard their former humanity. If Arthur truly is a vampire, then the vampirism altering her from human to vampire is what caused your life lost by that ruling to return to you as that rule will not violate the balance. Only murder violates it without penalty.
But how do we know for certain?
Ygraine asked worriedly picking up Arthur and holding her in her arms.
Arthur was staring at her mothing and seemed to find herself comfortable in her mother's arms.
Well, there are a few distinct features vampires have that distinguish them from humans.
Gaius said before returning to the entry. He scanned the page before finding notes on the other page, Ah, they are pale, fair skinned. No, that won't work. They, no, having red eyes doesn't due to some humans being albino and mistaken for vampires. Oh, their only distinguishing feature is their fangs which replace the upper canines though it is unclear all of their canines are replaced with fangs. The upper canine fangs can be visible when the vampire's lips aren't fully closed as they appear over the lower lip, typically when they smile as a threat or teasing their true identities.
But she doesn't have any teeth.
Ygraine said.
Gaius looked up at her, But she would desire blood. A newborn feeds on their mother's milk. Perhaps a vampire baby does not feed on anything but their mother's blood.
Except you said they have no blood of their own.
Uther stated.
I said their heart doesn't beat unless they have consumed blood.
Gaius reminded them, Though perhaps we should test this theory.
Ygraine was reading among the notes that vampires also find it sensual to sink their fangs into another person when Gaius approached the king.
Your dagger, your majesty.
Gaius said holding his hand out.
What are you planning?
Uther asked not handing over his dagger.
Nothing that will hurt your majesties, if Arthur is indeed a vampire, she would be attracted to fresh blood.
Gaius said clearly showing he would be drawing his own blood with his hands.
Uther unsheathed his dagger and handed it hilt first to Gaius.
Gaius was about to bring it across his palm when Ygraine said, No, I'm her mother, it should be my blood.
Uther looked shocked as Ygraine held out her hand, he was about to stop them when Gaius drew the blade lightly enough to not scar his wife's hand but enough to draw blood.
Arthur who had been staring at her mother's face admiring her suddenly shifted toward that wonderful scent. She squirmed trying to get to it so she could drink it up for it was the scent of her mother's blood freshly drawn.
Ygraine struggled to hold Arthur with one arm and found that Arthur's blue-eyed gaze did not leave her bleeding hand. She moved it closer to her daughter who started opening and closing her mother.
Arthur could sense the blood coming closer to her, she needed it, she was hungry. Arthur tried to bring her mouth to the crimson liquid. Ygraine unsure whether or not Arthur's reaction was because she was a vampire or because she sensed her mother was hurt, so she drew away her hand.
For the first time Arthur cried. It became clear that this silent child who cooed only upon seeing her mother was wailing due to hunger and she could sense the one thing she could consume for sustenance be taken away from her.
Ygraine quickly moved her bleeding hand back lifted Arthur up to let her get at the blood flowing from the cut on her hand. Arthur brought herself to her mother's blood and began lapping up as best as she could. It became clear to everyone that Arthur was indeed a vampire. Despite being a newborn baby vampire and drinking blood for the first time, Arthur merely cleaned up her mother's hand before falling back into her comfortable position yawning and closing her eyes as she was ready for a nap.
Gaius quickly took the queen's hand and began cleaning the wound before applying a paste and wrapping clothe around her hand.
Our daughter is... She is a vampire.
Ygraine said sobbing.
That alone is the only reason you are alive.
Gaius said, However, I doubt Nimueh knows any method of applying this curse to anyone, let alone a newborn even one she helped ensure would exist. However, I don't know everything she knows. I assume none of these events are considered to be a joyous occasion.
Of course not.
Uther growled, Matter of fact, if you wish to remain the court physician, you will cease all practices of magic immediately.
Ygraine snapped her head up, she was upset her daughter was a vampire which clearly magic had to be involved but she knew good people who were sorcerers, aside from Gaius there was Balinor and Lady Vivienne whom she knew shortly after her pregnancy that Uther had an affair with her a couple of months prior to his venture to the High Priestess.
Uther whatever it is you are about to do, it won't turn out good!
Ygraine called after him.
You shouldn't have died for Arthur, you shouldn't have even died at all, nor should Arthur be cursed!
Uther rounded, Magic is clearly a blight upon this land. I am outlawing it, under penalty of death!
He left for the court room to inform them of his new decree. Ygraine looked at Gaius just as shocked by Uther's clearly rage driven decision.
I'll help you get back to your chambers, your majesty.
Gaius said to a clearly still weak Ygraine. Ygraine was thankful as she was aided in her return to her chambers where she fell asleep on her bed, Arthur sleep beside her.
A few hours after the entire ordeal with Arthur's birth, Lady Vivienne was in the very same process, Ygraine had just gone through. Nursemaids and Midwives doing everything they can as Vivienne gave birth to her second child.
Sir Gorlois stood looking out the window while holding little infant Morgause when a nursemaid came out of the room his wife was in.
Another girl, Sir Gorlois.
The nursemaid said bowing her head before rising, She's been named Morgana.
You hear that Morgause?
Sir Gorlois said looking down at her, You have a little sister.
At that moment Gaius came rushing towards the knight, Sir Gorlois, I must speak with you.
What is it Gaius?
Sir Gorlois inquired.
The queen, she died but only for a brief moment, but...
Gaius tried to explain pausing to catch his breath.
Yes, I know she gave birth to a son.
Sir Gorlois said, His got a new little sister, just like Morgause.
Gaius raised his eyebrow, Don't give me that look. I'm not foolish enough to not figure out the timing for Morgana.
Sir, your daughter is silent, we're worried.
The nursemaid said.
Not another one...
Gaius said causing Sir Gorlois to raise his own eyebrow. Gaius shook his head, Never mind that, Uther's declared a ban on magic under penalty of death.
Sir Gorlois frowned, Go check on Morgana, take Morgause with you. I'll speak with the king.
Gaius took Morgause from Sir Gorlois before following the nursemaid to Lady Vivienne.
Gaius, oh good, where is Gorlois?
Lady Vivienne inquired upon seeing that her husband was absent.
Uther is banning magic under penalty of death.
Gaius explained, Your husband has gone to speak with him.
Lady Vivienne suddenly sprang up off the bed. Rushing from the room, Lady Vivienne headed straight for her and her husband's chambers followed by the nursemaid holding the newborn Morgana and Gaius still holding Morgause.
By the time Gaius entered, Vivienne was writing a letter another one lying beside her nearly completely closed save for her seal. The nursemaid had left She finished when she finally turned to face Gaius.
I need you to give this to Gorlois.
She said holding up the letter she had just finished before sealing the first one, And this to Queen Ygraine.
Might I ask why?
Gaius inquired taking the letters after setting Morgause down next to Morgana.
To his surprise Vivienne picked up Morgause who started crying being separated from her sister.
I've had visions, Gaius.
Vivienne said, I knew this would come. I can't live in hiding nor do I have the option to give magic up. No, Morgana will have to stay with Gorlois. I need to get Morgause to Nimueh.
Gaius gasped, Do you know what you're saying?
You think I want to do this?
Vivienne said tears in her eyes, We both know I can't accept this new unjust law! But for my daughters' sake, one must go to Nimueh the other must hide. It will take time for her magic to develop. I know Morgana will do great things, Gaius, but she needs to remain so she can be with Arthur and Emerys. I'm just worried the other visions of her becoming a threat to magic coming true. You have to help me and Morgause escape. Please, for their sake! I can't live without magic, but I am not capable to being a good mother.
They both deserve their mother.
Gaius countered.
Morgause, yes, Morgana deserves better than me.
Vivienne deadpanned before sighing, Ygraine survived, correct?
At Gaius' nod she continued, Then understand that she'll be a better mother that I could ever be for Morgana. Honestly, I would only ensure both my daughters become dark witches who'll be in conflict with Emerys. For the sake of magic and her, I have to leave her. Doing so, I give her everything. Despite how much it hurts to do this. Please Gaius.
Gaius sighed, Alright, my lady.
Uther you understand what banning magic under penalty of death would mean.
Sir Gorlois said exasperated by his old friend.
Enough!
Uther bellowed rounding on his friend, I watched my wife die for a brief moment before returning and discover my son is cursed! I will not tolerate magic any longer... Ah, Gaius, glad you could finally join us.
Gaius had entered during Uther's rant at Gorlois.
Your majesty, I'm afraid I bring unfortunate news.
Gaius said before turning to Gorlois handing him the letter from his wife, She was long gone by the time I reached your chambers.
Gorlois took it breaking the seal and reading the letter. Tears filled Gorlois' eyes, No.
He said placing a hand over his face and he began to sob.
What happened?
Uther asked concern evident for his closest friend.
Morgana and I are leaving in the morning.
Gorlois said turning away from them and heading for his chambers. He stopped at the door, We've lost Morgause, Vivienne's gone mad and is on a suicide mission to kill Nimueh. Perhaps you are right about magic, my king.
Three years since the ban on magic was implemented. And nine months since she last saw Balinor. To think she had become pregnant with his child in the brief time he had spent with her. He couldn't risk her life, so he left to protect her. Hunith understood this but now, now it hurt. It hurt worse now that she was in labor during a harsh winter in Ealdor.
Alone, without anyone to aid her as she was in the process of giving birth, Hunith struggled as best she could to bring her child into this world. After all the pain, she felt relief as she felt her newborn child leave her.
Hunith quickly cut away the umbilical cord as safely as she could before holding her child. Her daughter was silent, still and seemed dead to the world as Hunith cried that after everything she went through, she lost her only child.
The fluttering of wings caught Hunith's attention as she saw a merlin land on the windowsill. It looked at the child and then its eyes glowed gold before taking off and leaving the window.
Suddenly her daughter started moving and opened her eyes. She cooed so softly, Hunith almost missed it but beyond that her daughter remained silent but never taking her eyes off her mother.
Oh, blessed are thou, whoever of magic, saved my daughter.
Hunith praised, My little Merlin.
Merlin smiled (unable to remember that she hadn't seen her mother alive in centuries) before falling asleep.
It had been eight years since the disaster that was her birth. During that time there were a few discoveries. First, when Arthur's teeth came in, her fangs were the first, since then she hadn't needed her mother to injure herself to feed her blood. Second was that Arthur had a strange innate fear of sunlight, when pressed, she confided that vampires are hypersensitive to sunlight making it lethal to them. However, they discovered this wasn't the case for Arthur and it took her a whole year to overcome her fear. Finally, Arthur no longer received blood from her mother once she was old enough and instead received it from patients of Gaius who needed to lose some blood (Arthur felt that somehow that wasn't good for one's health, but they had no evident against this) However, this only happened every few days.
Aside from discovering why vampires were nocturnal, through Arthur, Gaius managed to learn more of the strengths and weaknesses of vampires, though it seemed Arthur had less weaknesses than normal vampires. Garlic was particularly despised due to Arthur's hypersensitive senses. Arthur had difficulty with geometric shapes such as crosses, though she wasn't as impeded as she should have been, this didn't stop her from avoiding them. Silver mirrors didn't show their reflection, which became problematic for Arthur as everyone of high class had silver mirrors. Arthur was far stronger than any man which aided in her disguise as a boy, and she was even faster than anyone could track leading to the issue of keeping Arthur from getting away. Arthur had to be scolded multiple times for sneaking around with her far to greatly enhanced speed to get herself a treat (not blood) that she enjoyed. Speed alone wasn't what made keeping secrets from Arthur (which quickly became more of a threat to everyone keeping any that didn't involve her) as she could move along any surface not just the ground. Arthur would use her speed, ability to move along any surface and enhanced hearing to learn things that she shouldn't have. This resulted in many traitorous people or sorcerers being arrested and tried for everything from sedition, treason, and/or sorcery. In short Arthur was the reason people became incredibly wary when keeping secrets fearing she (to them he) would be listening in.
Worst of all however was Arthur's discovery of her ability to charm people. Only those of strong wills or strong minds could resist her, but anyone who looked her in the eye could fall victim to her control. Fortunately, this power terrified her as she considered it too close to magic, but it had saved her life from vengeful sorcerers every time, especially since that was how she first discovered it when she had said Don't kill me!
while staring straight into the golden glowing eyes of the sorcerer citing an incantation to set her on fire. When she saw his golden glowing eyes glow blue akin to her own blue eyes and stop his spell, she then decided to try and get away. Unfortunately, her second sudden command when she had lost focus resulted in the sorcerer taking his own life. Since then, she refused to exploit this power.
Arthur!
Queen Ygraine called out to her young daughter. The girl in question was tidying her hair up short as she checked herself in the mirror. She looked as boyish as she could, of course she had to as everyone knew her as Prince Arthur Pendragon, son of King Uther Pendragon and Queen Ygraine Pendragon (née de Bois) which meant, she couldn't appear as a girl at all.
Arthur was strapping on her sword to her belt when the queen suddenly entered her chambers.
You're not going to need that.
Ygraine said.
Arthur turned to look at her confused, Why not? Don't I have sword practice today.
Tomorrow. Today, you're with me.
Ygraine said. At Arthur's still confused expression she revealed, For the whole day.
At that Arthur suddenly beamed, Okay.
Despite her unusual upbringing, Arthur bonded with Ygraine as only a mother and daughter could. At first Arthur was confused about what was different about her from the other boys, but she quickly learned the difference. With a few close calls, Arthur's identity as the daughter of the king and queen remained a secret only, they and Gaius knew (save Gorlois and Vivienne). After her realization, Arthur kept this truth closest to her heart alongside the fact that she is a vampire. Arthur preferred to spend time with her mother as it made her feel like an actual girl, despite enjoying many of the activities she wouldn't ever be permitted to do as one, such as wearing leggings, knight lessons (as expected of a prince), and politics befitting of the future king.
Arthur did however envy the other young girls. She longed to what it was like to actually live as a girl... Well, technically princess.
After following her mother all the wait to the royal chambers Arthur froze upon seeing a young girl beside her mother's maidservant.
Both bowed before them and Arthur was surprised by how drawn she was to the dark skin brown eyed girl before her. This confused Arthur even more that she wanted to be close to the girl.
I wasn't expecting you to bring your daughter, Liliana.
Ygraine said upon seeing the young girl.
Oh, I'm sorry your majesty, I forgot this was supposed to be very private.
Liliana said, This is my daughter, Guinevere.
Guinevere bowed again, My friends call me Gwen though, your majesty.
Should I take my daughter home?
Liliana inquired unsure of herself.
No, so long as she swears to never speak of this with anyone who isn't already aware of it.
Ygrain said, Which you must also swear.
Arthur got the impression that both mother and daughter were very much alike.
I swear on my life I will not breath a word of this to anyone.
Liliana said seriously.
I swear... On my life... I won't say anything...
Gwen said doing her best and then bowing again.
Well that's good enough for me, come over here Arthur.
Ygraine said. Arthur obeyed and then saw a beautiful dress that looked properly child size. Liliana and Gwen also saw the dress. Ygraine walking over to it said, What do you think?
It's very pretty.
Arthur said trying to sound very boyish.
It's lovely, your majesty.
Gwen said.
Yes, it's for the new young lady I plan on introducing to my court this afternoon.
Ygraine said smiling at the dress. Liliana's eyes flashed to Arthur and a mischievous smile split across her lips.
Oh she'll look very lovely in that.
Liliana said giving a side glance at Arthur. Gwen giggled.
Arthur's mouth dropped. As pleased as she was that she could experience what it was like to be a girl as well as a princess for once, there was no way rumors wouldn't start about the queen forcing her own son to play dress up and attend a tea party with her. Her own reputation couldn't take it.
Yes, she will.
Ygraine said moving over to Arthur placing a hand behind her. Arthur could feel it slowly rise up to her hair. Ygraine then said, Of course, I don't appreciate the mischievous smirks at my daughter's expense.
Arthur felt her hair come loose as her mother's hand undid the do letting it fall to her shoulders.
Both Liliana and Gwen were wide eyed as Arthur's hair fell out of her short hair style up that made it look masculine. Even more shocking for them was how they hadn't noticed before how feminine Arthur looked, Liliana mentally kicked herself for not realizing it after her queen had asked her for a special dress made for a young girl around Arthur's age.
Gwen couldn't believe her eyes, B-b-but, he's a, a, isn't he?
No, I'm not.
Arthur said dropping her boyish tone for an offended girl tone shocking Gwen even further, And I'd appreciate no rumors ruining my lie of a life. Honestly, Gwen, I'm a little excited to finally be wearing a dress for a change.
Gwen stared at Arthur still in shock before her face lit up, Oh! Come on, you're going to look so pretty, your highness.
While Arthur was practically dragged away to be properly dressed Lilian turned to her queen, All this time and I didn't even notice she was your daughter.
You weren't supposed to.
Ygraine said before a concerned expression took over her face, Are you alright? You don't look too good, Lily.
Liliana simply smiled, I'm find your majesty. It's just Tom being a little too busy with his work to watch over both Elyan and Gwen.
Do you need to go see Gaius?
Ygraine asked not buying her story.
I'm fine.
Liliana said.
Ow!
Arthur yelped.
Both mothers turned back to see Gwen trying to style Arthur's hair. Arthur looked miserable, no longer envying other girls for having to wear dresses all the time, especially since this one came with a corset. She doubted she could breathe in it if she had the ability to breathe.
Why do you have your hair so short?
Gwen complained.
I can't exactly have it long as a boy.
Arthur explained before scrunching up her face as Gwen was yanking on her hair (she really wasn't doing any such thing, merely concealing its short length with an up do), I will never again complain about never getting to wear a dress. These things are death traps. I can't breathe.
You'll get used to them.
Ygraine said. Her tone dissuaded argument.
Finally, Gwen let go of Arthur's hair.
Oh, you are brilliant, Guinevere.
Ygraine praised.
Arthur was turned to face the mirror (changed out for non-silver for her sake) and she couldn't believe her eyes. Her reflection standing before her wasn't that of the boyish looking girl she had grown accustomed to seeing every day of her life. Instead, she saw a beautiful young lady with her hair done up clinging to her head in short simple braids concealing her how short her hair was with three strands hanging down to give off the illusion of having too much hair to keep in place. The Camelot red with gold accents dress defined her feminine features that she had to conceal behind tunics and leggings each day. For the first time in her life, Arthur felt like a princess.
We need a proper name for you, since you'll be pretending to be a very young noble lady I favor.
Ygraine said, And don't you worry about your father, I got him to agree, so long as no one finds out.
Arthur couldn't think of any name. She couldn't quite handle looking so pretty. It took her a moment to finally register what her mother had said, Um, maybe something that sounds similar? I don't think I'd acknowledge anything that doesn't sound like Arthur.
But there aren't really any good girl names that sound like Arthur, let alone a noble name.
Gwen said.
Unfortunately, she's right.
Liliana said, We could stick to A though, Ambrosia sounds quite regal.
Too long.
Arthur dismissed, I'd have trouble realizing that's me.
I like the start though.
Ygraine said, Amber, simple but still regal enough. Short enough that even you can remember, plus it is close enough to Arthur for you to remember.
Uh, yes, I, uh, should.
Arthur said bashfully.
Good, Gwen since you are here, you'll be pretending to be Lady Amber's maidservant.
Ygraine said, Yes, Lady, not princess. We only have a prince so we can't suddenly introduce a new princess, now, can we? Now, to tea.
As soon as Queen Ygraine and Arthur (as Lady Amber) arrived, the gathered noble women rose from their seats and bowed before the queen. They waited for her majesty to sit down first before noticing her gesture for the little girl, clearly a noble from her dress, done up hair, and face, to sit beside her. Then they took their seats, again.
I'll let it slide this once, due to having to get young Lady Amber here ready.
Queen Ygraine said, Poor girl hasn't had the chance to be among her piers, so I took matters into my own hands.
Oh, you are so kind, your majesty.
One of the ladies said, she was a pale red head that Arthur didn't like.
Thank you, Lady Serena.
Queen Ygraine said. Arthur seemed to understand that like the lords at the King's court, the ladies also used compliments they didn't mean to curry favor with either royal or to gain something. She really hated such veiled personal gain but even she had to put up with it, at least as Lady Amber she wouldn't have to be on the receiving end for once.
They then began discussing things that Arthur had no real mind to pay attention to. It was just gossip after all.
And what do you think about it, Lady Amber?
Queen Ygraine asked suddenly pulling her into the conversation.
It took Arthur a few seconds to realize she was Lady Amber and then she realized she had been caught spacing out.
Uh, I, what were we talking about?
Arthur asked clearly lost.
Doesn't get out much, does she?
Another lady said.
Poor girl doesn't even know how...
Lady Serena said before being cut off by the sound of coughing.
Gwen who had been beside her mother was suddenly trying to pull her away to the physician's chamber's.
I'm fine, Gwen...
Liliana said before succumbing to a coughing fit and collapsing.
Lady Amber and Queen Ygraine were the first from their seats with the young lady barely reaching the maidservant in time to catch her from her fall. With one look from Ygraine she knew that Liliana was dying, Guards!
The physician's chamber door slammed against the wall as two guards came in carrying a barely conscious Liliana followed by Queen Ygraine, Gwen who had a strange young lady in a red dress with gold accents and her hair done up comforting her as she led the poor girl in. Gaius was shocked to see this unfurl before him but quickly began taking control of the situation.
Put her here.
Gaius said pointing to the cot.
Liliana was lain atop the cot by the guards who then left to guard the door.
Coughing Liliana said, In... The Queen's... Goblet... Lord Cyrus...
Don't strain yourself.
Gaius said. He began checking her over before giving the queen an arched eyebrow in question of the young noble girl.
Ygraine just shrugged before gesturing for him to focus on her maidservant.
I'm afraid it is likely poison.
Gaius said before turning to his book on poisons and venoms, And without knowing which poison I won't be able to make the antidote.
Well, you heard enough to guess which, right?
Ygraine asked concern for her maidservant (which only Arthur ever showed any such amount of concern for a servant which the King showed none, valuing one's status more). She joined Gaius by reading over his shoulder.
Arthur pulled Gwen to the side sitting her down, It'll be okay, Gaius will save her.
I'm afraid not.
Gaius said earning a scolding look from both Arthur and Ygraine for dashing away any hope of saving Liliana's life, Given the amount of time, she would of had to of ingested the poison this morning. There are only three poisons in here that quick and given her symptoms only one it could be. I don't have the ingredients for an antidote for any of them. I'm sorry, my dear.
Gwen...
Liliana called. Gwen at first didn't want to go, she didn't want to watch her mother die.
You'll regret it for the rest of your life.
Arthur whispered into her ear.
Gwen got up and moved over to her mother. Kneeling down she looked at her mother with teary eyes.
My...
Cough, Dear girl, please don't let yourself...
Cough, Never be happy again. You tell your father and brother... That I love you all so much...
Liliana said caressing Gwen's face, Promise me...
Worse cough, Gwen will get a... A position in the royal household...
Liliana's eyes became unfocused as her body went limp her breathing slowed but didn't stop.
Mother!
Gwen cried out fearing her mother was gone, Mother! Mother! No, don't leave me!
Arthur grabbed Gwen around the waist and began pulling her away causing Gwen to freak, No! Mother! Please don't leave me! Mother! Mother!
Once they were out of the physician's chamber Arthur let go of Gwen and was about to try and comfort her when she looked up at Arthur tears in her eyes before running away to home.
Arthur couldn't get Gwen's face out of her head. She decided then and there that the culprit wouldn't get away with what they did to Gwen.
Lord Cyrus entered his chambers unaware of the young lady doing so with him from the ceiling. Upon his entry he saw Lady Serena was waiting for him, arms crossed.
I take it things didn't as planned, sister.
Lord Cyrus said. Arthur from her hiding spot suddenly had her jaw hanging, they were siblings!
Of course it didn't go as planned.
Lady Serena said, The queen's maidservant was the one poisoned not the queen.
Hm, I didn't expect her to sacrifice her own life for the queen.
Lord Cyrus said amused.
You were seen!
Lady Serena practically screamed at him, As insignificant to the king a servant's word is, the queen would take it over the word of a noble! We need to fix this.
Lady Serena was rummaging through her things while Lord Cyrus turned to the door, I'll go make sure the king doesn't suspect us.
You better.
Lady Serena growled. Lord Cyrus left.
Arthur clambered down before detaching from the wall just as Lady Serena found the second vial of poison.
I know some nobles marry their relatives for the sake of keeping their blood noble, but you two are sick.
Arthur said making Lady Serena aware of her presence.
Oh, Lady Amber.
Lady Serena said quickly hiding the vial behind her back before realizing the girl had heard everything. Abandoning all pretense Lady Serena spoke in a self-important tone, Do you really think the word of a child would matter very much, even if you are Queen Ygraine's little pet...
On your knees.
Arthur commanded eyes glowing. Lady Serena who had looked into Arthur's eyes at the wrong moment suddenly sat kneeling before her, Arthur continued as she got closer, You tried to assassinate my mother, murdering my new friend's mother in the process. No, you don't get the chance to have a trial.
In that moment Lady Serena realized the girl was Prince Arthur.
And do you want to know a secret.
Arthur said whispering into Lady Serena's ear, The king and queen didn't have a son, no, they had a daughter, cursed to be a vampire. One who is currently very thirsty.
Lady Serena's eyes went wide as Arthur bared her fangs before sinking them into Lady Serena's neck.
Lady Serena's scream echoed through the halls despite the closed door and by the time Lord Cyrus reached his sister, the king was already standing over her body, vial of poison in hand. Arthur had already left the chambers.
Arrest him.
King Uther said, distaste in the undeniable treachery before evident in his tone.
Three days after Lord Cyrus' trial, Liliana awoke finally feeling well enough to sit up.
She was greeted by the greatest sight she could have seen, her husband, son and daughter all sitting before her.
But, Gaius said..
Liliana didn't get the chance to finish as Gwen knocked the wind out of her from tackling her in a hug. The poor girl was uncontrollably crying tears of joy seeing her mother getting better.
He only needed the poison to make the antidote.
Tom said, Think he's going to overstock supplies for antidotes from now on.
How?
Liliana asked.
Gwen came rushing home telling us you were dead.
Elyan said, By the time we got her to explain what happened, Prince Arthur came scrambling in saying, you weren't dead yet and Gaius was making the antidote. We learned later he had killed Lady Serena who was behind the assassination attempt on the queen you stopped and that Lord Cyrus was sentenced to death. You missed the execution. After that, that noble girl, Lady Amber that Gwen had mentioned kept coming by to inform us about your condition. We only came by because she said that Gaius said you should be waking soon.
Liliana laughed a little, Thank goodness, I've been drifting in and out of conciseness these past few days.
And you still need rest my dear girl.
Gaius said, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you all to leave. Don't you have work to do, Tom?
Oh, right. Come on Elyan.
Tom said getting up, Be good, Gwen.
I will.
Gwen said before giving her mother a kiss on her forehead and rushing off.
She's been made a member of the servants of the royal household.
Gaius said, Though she's officially doing an apprenticeship under the royal seamstress, she's been unofficially made Lady Amber's maidservant. Don't think it'll last though given how new the young lady is.
Liliana laid back down, She wanted to be like me. Can you believe she actually thinks being a maidservant to the queen is the coolest job in the world?
You have the privilege very few commoners have.
Gaius said, The ear of the queen, and the prince. Now, your daughter has that privilege as well. Even if she'll be reassigned to become the official maidservant of another in due time.
Liliana smiled, At least she gets her dream job for now.
Two years since the attempt on the queen's life by Lord Cyrus and Lady Serena saw Uther and Ygraine bickering over him sending troops to aid his old friend Sir Gorlois.
If you don't send men in time than if he does die then Morgana will hold a grudge against you for the rest of her life!
Ygraine said.
Fine!
Uther responded to her before turning to Arthur, Inform Sir Olwin to take men to the reinforce Sir Gorlois.
Yes father.
Arthur said bowing before leaving.
Sir Gorlois stood in battle stance breathing heavily as he was covered in wounds. His men lay dead all around him while the remaining force of Mercia that and crossed the border and threatened the village outside his home.
Those men of Mercia realized he was alone and decided to finish the job. They stopped short in their charge when the sound of horses came from behind the knight.
For Camelot!
Sir Olwin cried out as he and the few knights that had joined him charged the remaining troops of Mercia, followed by the men Uther had promised Gorlois.
Sir Gorlois smiled seeing them run down the remaining troops of Mercia who were fleeing for their lives. His strength failing, Sir Gorlois finally collapsed.
Sir Olwin, he's over here!
One of the men called out after spotting Sir Gorlois.
Sir Olwin came into view as Sir Gorlois was breathing heavily knowing there was nothing that could be done to save him.
Sir Olwin.
Sir Gorlois rasped lifting up a key, Take this to Morgana, she'll know what it means.
Sir Olwin took the key, but Gorlois grabbed his hand before Olwin could retract it, Make sure Uther keeps his promise to look after her... Tell her, I loved her till the end...
Sir Gorlois' eyes rolled into the back of his head and his hand went limp. That day Camelot lost a great knight and Morgana lost a father.
Morgana stared out the window watching the darkened sky as rain poured down. It had suddenly started as though it were a foreboding ill omen. When she saw the figures of knights and men through the window in the rain she rushed from her chambers to the entrance hall.
The large doors opened and in walked Sir Olwin leading men bearing the still body of Sir Gorlois. Upon seeing her father lying in the makeshift stretcher arms clasped over his sword hilt to his head blade to his feet, tears filled Morgana's eyes.
He lived long enough to tell me to tell you that he loved you to his dying breath.
Sir Olwin said after kneeling down to be at her level, And to give you this.
Sir Olwin held up the key. Morgana still teary eyed knew immediately what this meant. Her father had shown her where he kept the letter in case he died far away in battle and never got to see her one last time. Morgana didn't want to take it; she didn't want this. She remembered his last words to her.
I'm sorry, it's my duty as a knight to serve Camelot and my duty as a father to protect you.
He had said. She had screamed that he shouldn't because this was below his station. Now, she regretted how foolish she was. He had given his life for not only her but the people of Camelot regardless of station.
Morgana took the key, I, I need a moment.
The young lady turned leaving for her father's study where the drawer was. Once she was alone in the study, she unlocked the drawer and took out the letter. Opening up the envelope and reading the letter within, Morgana couldn't believe what her father had written. She couldn't be. But if this was true, she hadn't lost her entire family in one day, just the man she had known her whole life until his point, as her father.
The carriage came through the village with the returning knights and troops as escort. The young Lady Morgana would be living as the King's Ward since the death of his old friend, Sir Gorlois who would be buried near the Darkling Woods, the place he had met Lady Vivienne where both had wanted to be laid to rest.
Departing from the carriage, Morgana looked around at what would be her new home for the rest of her life, until she was married off.
The courtroom of the citadel the King's and Queen's respective courts were gathered while the King and Queen sat upon their thrones, Prince Arthur Pendragon standing beside his mother.
The doors opened as Sir Olwin escorted Lady Morgana into the courtroom. King Uther and Queen Ygraine rose from their thrones as Lady Morgana approached them.
Welcome to Camelot, Lady Morgana.
King Uther said to his bastard daughter whom he would never admit to anyone (save Ygraine who forced it out of him).
Lady Morgana bowed before speaking formally, Thank you, your majesty for taking me in.
I once promised your father I would look after you, a promise I intend to keep.
King Uther said before turning, This is my wife, Queen Ygraine, may she be a motherly figure to you.
Lady Morgana looked up at the royal woman, her blonde hair done up in a braided bun with strands curling at the sides. Queen Ygraine smiled at the young lady, Welcome, home, Princess Morgana Pendragon.
Dead silence. King Uther looked as though he had been ruined.
Oh, make no mistake. I will not deny this girl her birthright.
Queen Ygraine said to the court, Nor will I tolerate anyone daring to use the circumstance of her birth against her. Morgana is acknowledged by myself as Uther's lawful daughter via affair with Lady Vivienne during Sir Gorlois' time fighting the northern raiders. I alone have the right to hold it against my husband but know that I would of rathered an affair to at least have an heir for the sake of Camelot due to my difficulties in producing one. Anyone who would dare to harm Morgana through this or think less of her, will have to deal with me, or worse, with Prince Arthur.
Every noble tensed at the last part. They knew the queen well enough not to challenge her, they knew even better after Lady Serena's death and her brother/husband's execution that Arthur was worse.
Don't worry, my dear girl.
Queen Ygraine said turning back to Morgana now Princess, I have taken care of ensuring you are officially Princess of Camelot. I do not want to deny you what is rightfully yours, however, while I can never replace what you lost, perhaps I can give you what you never had.
The queen hugged her husband's bastard daughter which to her wasn't anything less than her own daughter. Morgana didn't know how to feel, the one person who should of held a grudge against her was ensuring she wasn't treated horribly for this truth of herself, even going so far as to show she cared enough to treat her as if she was the queen's own daughter.
Queen Ygraine stood up, This is Prince Arthur, your brother, he will show you around the citadel.
Prince Arthur stepped forward bowing before her before saying, Sister, shall we.
If there was anything that could bring her to tears, it was being called sister by her own brother. Morgana however felt strange that she'd rather have a sister than a brother, yet she felt as if she had known Arthur all her life. Arthur felt the same way about Morgana but with an inexplainable pang of betrayal.
Arthur led Morgana nearly all over the citadel, from the courtyard to the physician's chambers where Morgana met Gaius who knew of the Queen's plan. Then after their meeting with Gaius, Arthur took Morgana to show her other key locations such as the Queen's garden, the library, the armory (in case she needed to learn how to protect herself), her own chambers (Morgana thought unusual for a boy let alone a prince, but then again, she had never been in a boy's chambers before) then the kitchens. After a quick lunch at the kitchens, Arthur led Morgana to the dining hall then showed her where noble guests stayed. The knight's residence before finally taking her up a long stair to what would become her chambers.
When Morgana opened the door to her new chambers, she was surprised to see a dark-skinned dark-haired brown eyed girl waiting for them. The girl bowed before them.
Sister, this is Guinevere, she is Liliana's daughter, of whom is the queen's maidservant, Gwen, her friends call her that, will be your maidservant from this day forward.
Arthur explained.
Oh, um, hello Guinevere.
Morgana said. She had never had a maidservant before let alone one near her own age. For some reason, she felt as though she was good friends with her, as well as despised her. She (mentally) shook away the feeling.
It's a pleasure to serve your highness.
Gwen said smiling, Real shame I won't be serving Lady Amber anymore.
It was as though there was a secret meaning behind that as Gwen had made a side glance to Arthur when she said that.
Ah, yes, one last thing.
Arthur said as Morgana walked in ready to turn her brother away as it wasn't proper for a boy to be in a girl's chambers. This piqued Morgana's curiosity. Arthur shyly said, I am Arthur Pendragon, but I am not the son of the king and queen.
What, so you're not royalty?
Morgana inquired. She was already thinking of a way to exploit this before mentally scolding herself for such thoughts, she liked Arthur and felt a bond only a sibling could.
No, I am.
Arthur corrected before her tone changed losing its boyishness with each word, I'm not their son, I'm their daughter. I'm your sister.
Morgana gasped, Really? You're actually a girl?
Arthur chuckled, Yeah, mother lied for my own sake. I am going to be king, but if everyone knew I was a girl, I'd have a lot more trouble becoming king, let alone being allowed to.
I can't imagine living a life as a boy.
Morgan said.
Honestly, I was jealous of other girls before mother gave me the chance to experience what I should have lived my life like.
Arthur said, As Lady Amber, that same day was when we almost lost Gwen's mother to an assassination attempt of mother's life. She choose to give up her own to save her queen.
And Arthur killed the mastermind behind it, resulting in a spare vial of poison being used to make the antidote in time.
Gwen said, If it weren't for her, I, I would have lost my mother. Arthur saved her life.
Morgana smiled at the admiration in Gwen's eyes. She couldn't believe she actually got a sister who was also a hero despite living a lie. However, there was something Morgana wanted of Arthur.
Arthur?
Morgana said getting her sister's undivided attention, Could you? I suffer from nightmares when I sleep. Could you stay with me tonight?
Arthur looked at her with the same kind of pity a concerned sister would have for their own sister, Yes, I'll be back by tonight. I'll let you take your time to get settled in first.
Morgana (despite her unexplainable bad feelings towards her) knew her strange feelings of lifelong friendship with Gwen was well founded as the two girls had quickly become friends. But unfortunately, Gwen had to leave early due to being so young thus, her mother Liliana came to tuck the young princess in. Before that however, Arthur came dressed in a simple nightgown.
I am very happy, you three have become friends.
Liliana said to her daughter and the new princess, Hopefully, you all can grow up to be more decent women, even if you have to pretend to be a decent man, your highness,
this was directed to Arthur, than your betters. Good night your highnesses.
Good night, Gwen, Good night Lily.
Arthur and Morgana said as they watched the two go.
The two sisters shifted under the covers of Morgana's bed. Despite how tired they were from the day (Morgana more than Arthur) neither could fall asleep.
Morgana couldn't take it anymore. She turned round to face Arthur.
Did you ever get this strange feeling like you know Gwen your whole life despite only just meeting?
Morgana asked her sister.
Arthur turned to look Morgana in the eyes. Morgana suddenly realized she was the only one truly tired. Arthur seemed to come to a decision.
Or feeling the same way about each other?
Arthur guessed, at Morgana's nod she continued, My mother is barren. She should have died for me.
What. But you're her daughter, how is she alive?
Morgana asked extremely confused and feeling less tired.
Your family, so it's better you know the whole truth.
Arthur said, Because mother is barren, she's more accepting of an affair from father, so long as she's in on it. Since she wasn't on either the affair of him going to a sorceress, Nimueh, for magic to allow mother to bear a child, she's holding it against him and only him. He deserves it since mother would rather the affair than magic bound by the rule 'a life for a life'. But he did do that, thus she became pregnant with me and had me early. For the record I'm the only sister, but we're practically twins since we were born the same day, or night. As to why my mother survived. I was born cursed. I'm a vampire.
She finished by showing her fangs.
That doesn't explain how you and your mother got around that rule.
Morgana said before asking, What's a vampire? Is that why you have fangs?
Yes, it's why I have fangs.
Arthur said amused before explaining, Vampires aren't living. I'm technically dead. That's how mother survived though she was dead for a moment as that rule did kill her before returning her life to her since it's about keeping balance. Me being a vampire means I can do things; it also means I have to drink blood for sustenance. I can still eat and drink food, but I only gain sustenance from blood. Oh, I don't breathe either, being dead and all.
This was a lot for Morgana. She couldn't fully wrap her head around it all at once. After a moment she finally could.
But doesn't that make you magic?
Morgana inquired concerned for her sister.
Arthur looked at her, It's why the ban exists. I don't have magic. You might though.
At Morgana's shocked expression Arthur continue to stop her questions, Your mother wasn't well known for being a sorceress, and little less on being a seer.
Morgana gasped, My mother was a seer? Could that explain my nightmares?
Perhaps, I don't really know. Not exactly capable of learning much or anything about magic since the ban.
Arthur said, But maybe they are visions.
Morgana thought about that remembering all the occasions where her nightmares came true, I did have a nightmare of my father's... I mean Sir Gorlois' death.
You don't need to do that.
Arthur said, He was a father to you. You shouldn't be obligated to address him differently just because he wasn't your birth father. Oh, and despite what mother said, she won't force you to view her as such.
Morgana smiled at that, He said once, my mother thought yours would have been a better mother to me than herself... Maybe she saw it in a vision.
We should get to sleep.
Arthur said turning her back to give her sister some form of privacy. Morgana however hugged her sister tightly.
Hold me, please, I don't want to be alone again...
Morgana whispered. Arthur struggled to but managed to turn around and returned the hug. Both sisters fell soundly asleep in each other's embrace.
Seventeen years had passed since Merlin had been born. During that time, she had developed quite the reputation as the 'freak' of Ealdor. Merlin wasn't exactly called such due to her looks, no in fact she could pass off as a noble given her fair (truthfully pale) skin and raven black hair, but it was her abnormality that earned her such a reputation. She was always at odds with the village and no one around her age viewed her on any friendly terms, primarily choosing to bully her growing up. Only Will was different, he had become her friend after she had saved him from a mother bear in the forest.
Merlin was currently in the nearby forest hiding away from the judgmental eyes of the inhabitants. A cute little bunny plopped onto her lap as usual her magic simply attracted animals to her and cause them to remain docile around her. Not even predators would harm any animal that would normally be their prey in her presence, but should anyone else approach her, the effect suddenly ended, and they would scram or become hostile respectively. Only her own mother Hunith didn't cause the effect of her magic to end, as the same mother bear that Merlin had managed to (by willingly directing the effect) save from had taken Merlin away as though she was her own cub and Hunith had to convince the mother bear to return her child. The mother bear actually was afraid of Hunith as though their roles were reversed in a physical sense. It was after that, that Will had come over accusing Merlin of having magic and not taking no from either Merlin or Hunith for an answer. Will had to swear on his father's grave to get Hunith to stop freaking out because Will was bad at secrets.
Unfortunately, for all the critters that had come around her, the sound of a thwack scared them away. Merlin got up and was about to head back when she heard the thwack again. Deciding to investigate she went toward the sound.
From around a tree, she saw Will chopping a different tree down. He was already doing the final swing when she moved around to avoid both axe and tree as the tree came down.
Hi Will... Woah.
Merlin said holding her hands up as Will rounded on her axe raised.
Merlin!
Will said lowering the axe, You shouldn't of spooked me. I nearly took your head off.
What you doing?
Merlin inquired.
Little obvious.
Will said gesturing to the felled tree with his axe before grinning, Bet even you couldn't do it without this.
Merlin frowned, Nice try, I'm not falling for that bait.
So even with magic you still need an axe.
Will mocked, Come on, no one is around to see.
Oh, fine, I'll prove you wrong.
Merlin said.
How could you be so foolish!
Hunith scolded, Idiotic! Irresponsible! And you are no better Will.
Will looked down at his boots. Merlin was staring at her shoes.
Merlin shouldn't be in trouble, it was my fault.
Will tried but Hunith saw through it.
Just because she grabbed the axe from you doesn't mean I don't know what she did.
Hunith said, That tree did not fall from an axe, it still had its roots! You two nearly flattened Old Man Simmons. No, you head home Will, Merlin, you pack. I'm going to send word to Gaius.
Will was about to protest but one glare from Hunith and he was already out the door.
But mother, Uncle Gaius lives in Camelot! Worse, he lives in the city, the citadel itself!
Merlin protested.
And you clearly can't hide or use your 'gift' responsibly.
Hunith said already writing the letter.
Fine. At least I'll get out of Will trying to win me over.
Merlin said, It's better than having to stay inside for a month.
I had to fight a bear to get you back in here.
Hunith said, You definitely earned staying in here for a month after that.
Not my fault animals like me.
Merlin said, When am I leaving?
Tomorrow, in the morning.
Hunith said, And you better dress as a boy.
Merlin felt that was a consolation prize to this sudden change in her life.
I'm going alone?
Merlin said in disbelief.
Yes, and don't try using what they do to sorcerers and sorceresses in Camelot as an excuse.
Hunith said, Would you rather be discovered here in Essetir or in Camelot?
So, my options are torture and enslavement or death.
Merlin said crossing her arms, If I was forced to choose, I'd pick death. But I don't want to die. Still, I'd prefer death over what Cenred does
Then it's settled, you're going to go live with Gaius.
Hunith said leaving to send the letter, Maybe you can learn to properly use your 'gift' from him.
Merlin looked excited at that, Hopefully.
Merlin (dressed as a boy with her raven locks hidden inside a cap) stood on the edge of Ealdor. Hunith and Will stood there with her.
I'm sorry you have to leave.
Will said, Maybe you can come back at some point.
Even if I could, the answer is still no, Will.
Merlin said, I told you, you're like a brother to me.
Can't blame me for trying?
Will said. From Merlin's expression, she could. Will sighed, Goodbye, Merlin.
Goodbye, Will.
Merlin said.
Will walked back to the village while Hunith stood directly before her daughter, Now, don't let anyone get too close to you on the road. Don't do anything stupid. And once your in Camelot, don't go get yourself discovered. Try and behave for Gaius, especially since you could be executed for speaking your mind.
I'll try mother.
Merlin said. She hugged her mother.
I know you have magic for a reason.
Hunith whispered to her, Perhaps you'll find out why in Camelot. Don't let anyone or anything make you think your bad because of it.
I'll try not to.
Merlin said, I'll try to keep my head down. Goodbye mother.
Goodbye, my dear Merlin.
Hunith said.
Merlin turned and set off for Camelot.
Notes:
This chapter was going to have The Dragon's Call at the end of it, but it was getting too long. The Dragon's Call will be the next chapter.
I will point out that Morgana's wish does take an immediate impact on Ygraine's view of Morgana herself, however, there is nothing in canon that actually implies that Ygraine wouldn't just outright accept Morgana to spite Uther, though the wish does sort of negate any internally kept hostility towards Morgana from Ygraine. Though it is unlikely that Morgana's wish changed Ygraine at all, perhaps one can view that it does prevent Ygraine from viewing Morgana in a hostile, she's my husband's bastard, light. Arthur wouldn't care since, he already in canon, viewed Morgana as a sister, which Arthur still does just now with Ygraine's backing.
Ygraine is immediately antagonist towards Uther and remains so is because in canon show' Ygraine's ghost states Uther is no longer the man she loved, and in this fanfic, he already was due to his adultery and betrayal of her refusal to use magic so she could have a legitimized heir with him, she likely would have preferred adultery to magic too.
Chapter 2: The Dragon's Call
Summary:
Merlin, Arthur, and Morgana finally meet as Merlin reaches Camelot. The threat of Mary Collins remains unchanged but the interactions between Arthur and Merlin do change from their original interactions.
Notes:
I decided to keep Kilgharrah's narration (altered to fit Merlin's now female gender) because it fit this chapter despite the original being in the previous chapter.
The Mary Collins killing and then using magic to Impersonate Lady Helen moment was removed due to its overuse in fanfics and having no change at all in this new timeline, it's exactly the same as in the canon show, go watch it on YT or the full episode, you don't need to see that scene again.
For clarity, yes, the knights that bullied Morris along with Arthur, still bully Morris without Arthur, I have in this fanfic both Morris and Bronwen be betrothed, I also didn't include Bronwen's death scene because, that also doesn't get altered in this new timeline, so they both die in this chapter and are buried together at the end of all the events.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
The Silentborn Sisterhood
Chapter 2
The Dragon's Call
No young woman no matter how great, can know their destiny. They cannot glimpse their part in the great story that is about to unfold. Like everyone, they must live and learn. And so will be for the young witch arriving at the gates of Camelot. A girl that will in time mother a legend. Her name: Merlin.
As Merlin finally left the trees she gasped as she saw Camelot for the first time. Taking a moment to take in the view before continuing on her journey to her new home.
The lower village was a sight to behold for the young girl (disguised as a boy for lone travelling) as she kept turning around to see everything. Making her way up the path to the front gate of the citadel, Merlin did one last look at the village before crossing the bridge.
A massive crowd stopped her as the king and Queen stepped out onto terrace.
Let this serve as a lesson to all.
King Uther said as a man was being dragged to a raised platform meant for beheadings, This man, Thomas James Collins, is adjudged guilty of conspiring to use enchantments and magic. And pursuant to the laws of Camelot, I, Uther Pendragon, have decreed that such practices are banned under penalty of death. I pride myself as a fair and just king, but for the crime of sorcery, there is but one sentence I can pass.
Despite the fact that he was only doing so for longer lasting scented candles.
Queen Ygraine silently commented. King Uther glanced at her only to receive her scowl.
Morgana and Arthur (disguised as Lady Amber) were watching together from an open window. Both smirked at the Queen's little comment and scowl at their shared father. Over the years Morgana viewed Queen Ygraine as a motherly figure. If anyone ever asked (Arthur and Gwen had) Morgana would say that Ygraine is the only one she could picture as her mother, despite being told she looked exactly like her birth mother, Lady Vivienne, Morgana couldn't see anyone other than Ygraine Pendragon as her mother. It helped that Prince Arthur was her brother (no one dared to correct this out of fear of the queen's or prince's wrath) who was nothing less than sisterly (save only when Arthur's disguise as a prince) to Morgana and she was sisterly to Arthur as well.
Merlin got the impression that despite everything, the queen seemed to be the only person the king would listen to even when he wouldn't see reason (though only to an extent).
King Uther turned back to face the crowd, staring at the man about to be beheaded. The executioner moved around the sorcerer as the guards secured him in place before moving away. The drum began to beat. King Uther raised his hand, and the executioner raised his axe waiting for the king's signal. King Uther brought his hand down.
The resounding thud of the axe hitting the wood as Thomas Collin's head fell into the basket was enough. Merlin had turned her head unable to watch unaware that Morgana had turned to her sister. Arthur hadn't looked away, she did notice her mother had.
Everyone's attention was brough back to the king as he began to speak again.
When we came to this land.
King Uther said wrapping an arm around Queen Ygraine, This kingdom was mired in chaos, but with the people's help, magic was driven from the realm. So, we,
Queen Ygraine shook her head glaring at him, I declare a festival to celebrate twenty years since the great dragon was captured, and Camelot freed from the evil of sorcery. Let the celebrations begin.
The King and Queen turned away to head inside the citadel when a loud wail Ygraine recognized as a mother's wail for their dead child stopped them.
There is only one evil in this land, and it is not magic!
Mary Collins cried out, It is you. With your hate and your ignorance... You took my son.
She pointed towards the platform where her son's headless corpse lay, I promise you, before these celebrations are over, you will share my tears. An eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth... A...
A dagger landed right next to her as everyone including the sorceress looked up to see Lady Amber disappear a moment passed and just as Mary Collins was about to speak up again, Prince Arthur burst through the main doors to the courtyard followed by Princess Morgana who went straight to the King and Queen.
The moment Merlin had laid eyes upon the lady next to the princess she felt instinctual absolute unbreakable trust with her, from the brief glance Merlin thought both the lady and the prince looked eerily similar, however that instinctual trust remained as Merlin looked upon Prince Arthur, this alone told Merlin that the lady was in truth the prince.
You speak of ignorance as though such vile acts of magic never happened twenty years ago.
Prince Arthur said as she approached the woman, From your threat you prove the law just and deserved. How can you speak of magic not being the evil of this land when all who have used it openly, do so to destroy Camelot!
Prince Arthur lifted her arms up gesturing to the crowd. Her gaze briefly stopped on the foreign boy whose lanky frame reminded her of her own disguise as a man, an instinctual sense of absolute trust in this person above everyone else came over her. Regardless she continued to speak, The law exists for a reason. What was life like when magic was legal? Can any who are old enough to remember answer?
The crowd erupted with nothing but the evils of magic many blaming it for their own hardships but not all spoke up.
There is your answer.
Prince Arthur said lowering her arms as she returned her attention to Mary Collins, And here I am, go ahead, a son for a son.
Mary Collins seemed to be considering the challenge for a moment before she lifted her hand to her necklace.
Seize her!
King Uther ordered pointing at the sorceress.
The guards were slow as Mary Collins looked around before muttering an incantation just as Prince Arthur reached her, sword drawn. A whirlwind surrounded her, and she was gone. The prince alone didn't shield himself from the whirlwind instead he reclaimed the dagger thrown at the sorceress.
Merlin sighed not noticing the prince and princess approaching her. She did notice when a sword was suddenly pointing at her though.
You.
Arthur said catching everyone's attention onto her and the foreign person, What business do you have in Camelot.
Merlin looking uncomfortable answered, I'm here to stay with Gaius.
Arthur lowered her sword, Really? I didn't know Gaius was getting a ward.
Merlin chuckled to relieve the stress from the sword that had been pointing at her, Uh, guess it isn't something worth bothering the royal family... Uh, I'm Merlin, Gaius' niece
She held her hand at the last five words she said.
Arthur stared at her. Morgana asked what was on Arthur's mind, We didn't know Gaius had a niece let alone one who dresses like a boy.
There was a subtle side glance from Arthur to Morgana that no one noticed aside from Morgana.
Oh, I, uh, us common folk don't have the luxury of an escort anywhere so when a girl like myself needs to travel alone on the road, it's better for us to dress up as boys to avoid...
Merlin explained being cut off at Arthur's hand.
Say no more.
Arthur said sheathing her sword at last, Well, welcome to Camelot. I'll take you to Gaius personally.
Morgana beat Arthur to grabbing and holding Merlin's arm with her own, So will I.
They were stopped by the king.
Arthur, Morgana, the guards can handle informing this... girl where Gaius is.
King Uther said momentarily forgetting that Merlin had explained her current appearance.
Merlin knowing King Uther's reputation and having just witnessed an execution tried to make herself seem small behind Arthur and Morgana, unfortunately it didn't help that she was taller than them both.
Arthur glared at King Uther, We haven't exactly shown our fairer hospitality to this girl who has traveled far to come and stay with her uncle.
She isn't...
King Uther said only for a gentle hand t firmly tug on him, so he was facing his wife.
Our apologies that the first thing you had to witness of Camelot was an execution followed by a death threat.
Queen Ygraine said, Camelot isn't usually this exciting. I believe Hunith is the name of our court physician's sister and that she lives in Ealdor on the edge of Essetir, correct?
Merlin nodded, Yes, your majesty.
Well then, given how ineffective our guards were on finding and protecting us from the second magic user.
Queen Ygraine said noticing the slight scared expression that briefly crossed Merlin's whole body, I think it best that both the prince and princess take you to your uncle. After all, it's good for them to showcase how much they care for the people, dear.
The last bit was directed towards King Uther with only the prince, princess, and Merlin overhearing it.
Who am I to argue with my wise queen.
King Uther said sounding sweet with an undertone of defeat. To the people it sounded like the king listened to his wife and queen.
Unfortunately, you do that quite a lot.
Queen Ygraine said dispelling everyone's brief glimpse of the old king and queen before the magic ban. They saw the current king and queen of Camelot a divided couple on many fronts that still remain together despite how little distant they had become, with the king seemingly the more distant than the queen.
Arthur led both Merlin and Morgana away, Down this way.
Their journey took them past two guards in the courtyard guarding a side passage down a hall and up two flights of stairs with the second flight having the door to the court physician up the first seven steps with the rest spiraling off into the main citadel.
Merlin knocked twice before saying, Hello?
There was no response.
Why don't we come back later.
Morgana suggested, I could introduce you to Gwen my maidservant... Hey!
Arthur had opened the door wide before gesturing for Merlin to enter. There were physician and scientific instruments everywhere covering all the tables along with books of various widths. However, they didn't see Gaius.
Hello?
Merlin softly called out once more. After walking further into the room with the prince and princess behind her, she spotted Gaius standing on a loft with but a railing between him and the edge.
Gaius?
Merlin inquired, Ahem!
Gaius forgetting how close to the edge and how unstable the railing was to his own weight, leaned back turning to see who had called him, only for the railing to give way and break causing the old man to fall with a Whoa!
escaping his lips.
Arthur acted instinctually already running to catch him throwing caution of the secrecy of her curse to the wind. Morgana had gasped.
Merlin's magic acted on instinct as well slowing down time. She looked around seeing the mattress Gaius used for sleeping. She stared at it intently sending it to right below her uncle. Looking around her gleeful smile suddenly became an expression of absolute fear as Arthur mid rush towards Gaius was now reaching for her sword, she was staring at Merlin.
Ah-oooh!
Gaius groaned out slightly in surprise at finding himself on his bed that definitely wasn't below him when he fell. The hissing sound of metal caught his attention and he saw Arthur holding a girl dressed up as a boy (Merlin had let her hair down during the walk to the physician's chambers) while Morgana stared at Arthur. The girl looked terrified for her life, as she should be.
I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. Please, I don't want to die.
Merlin pleaded with Arthur who wore a steeled expression.
Arthur she did save Gaius' life.
Morgana stated trying to get her sister to spare the girl.
And if she belongs to King Cenred?
Arthur countered, Magic is legal in Essetir.
I would rather die than become one of his slaves...
Merlin said trembling, Please, I can't help what I'm born with.
Arthur simply stared at Merlin for a second longer then, she removed her sword, You're not the only one.
Morgana and Gaius were surprised as Arthur opened her mouth wide to show Merlin her fangs.
Your highness, are you certain you trust...
Gaius gestured to the girl which offended her, Enough to reveal...
Um, I'm Merlin.
Merlin said pointing to herself, interrupting her own uncle.
Hunith's daughter?
Gaius inquired at Merlin's nod he then said, But you're not supposed to be here until Wednesday.
It is Wednesday.
All three girls said in unison as Arthur pulled down the book that had what she was in it.
Why does Prince Arthur have fangs?
Merlin inquired from Morgana and Gaius.
Because.
Arthur said dropping the tome on a nearby table with a thwomp she was already flipping through the pages saying, I am cursed. And to answer your question Gaius, yes, I trust Merlin more than anyone else in the world, including my mother
Trust me, that's not something anyone can achieve.
Morgana said, My sister trusts no one more than mother, myself included, and I'm trusted equally to her.
Arthur stopped flipping pages over to glare and pout at Morgana while Merlin looked shocked.
Don't pout at me.
Morgana scolded Arthur, You're just upset I revealed it. I know you would have told her.
Wait but... You were the lady who threw the dagger.
Merlin said realizing that Arthur actually was a girl.
Yes, Lady Amber, an alias so I can actually experience life as a woman.
Arthur said back to flipping pages until she reached the ones she was looking for, Ah, here it is, vampire.
Merlin read the entry on vampires. There had been a few updates in it to include, enhanced strength, unrivaled speed (nothing short of time manipulation could slow one down), the ability to heal any injury (lethal wounds untested), as well as certain weaknesses, such as sunlight sensitivity (Arthur's innate fear of sunlight brought about this theory), sensitivity to certain smells such as garlic (the enhanced senses were discovered despite Arthur's lacking need for breathing), certain geometric shapes messed with their vision (Arthur had to train herself to handle these shapes, especially crosses since she worked with swords a lot), and the explanation that vampires were basically evolved predator species, Arthur being the only one able to ignore certain instincts and weaknesses other vampires weren't (to their knowledge).
Do you really have to drink blood?
Merlin asked looking a little disturbed at what she had read.
Arthur didn't even bother faking a sigh, Every few days. I could simply have my meat rare but that would raise suspicion.
At this Gaius chimed in, Oh, that reminds me your highness, I have...
He was rummaging through his pickets when he suddenly started looking around. They all watched as he began to look around the mattress.
I had it in my pocket...
Gaius said before standing straight, No, I put it on the railing when I...
The sound of glass shattering on the floor made them all jump, and Arthur suddenly snapped to the scent of fresh blood. On the floor next to the mattress was a pool of blood with shards of broken glass.
Arthur stared at the now ruined blood on the floor, her gaze wandered to Merlin's neck for a brief moment before she shook her head, Accidents happen. I'll be fine...
She turned to leave, We'd better leave you two alone then.
Morgana followed Arthur out staring at her sister, You're not fine are you.
Arthur sent her hand across her hair, No, I want her, her blood... I can't do that to her.
Merlin was still staring at the door when she said, She's not going to be okay is she?
No, the longer she goes without drinking fresh blood the greater her thirst for it will be until she can't stop herself. Even then she's never unwillingly drained anyone of their blood, only Lady Serena suffered that fate, by Arthur's own choice.
Gaius said, And you will not address the prince by her true sex outside of those who are permitted to know, and currently the king is unaware you know, so you will continue to refer to him as the public does.
Merlin half nodded, Right, oh, I have this letter.
She rummaged through her pack pulling it out and handing it to Gaius, There.
I-- I don't have my glasses.
Gaius said.
Oh, um, do you know why I was born like this?
Merlin asked.
No one is born with magic.
Gaius stated, If you are, then you are a question that has never before been posed. And you need not worry about Arthur or Morgana telling the king about you, the queen is a different story. None but Uther Pendragon out of all four Pendragons harbor such hatred for magic, the other three secretly oppose the magic ban. You're safe with them knowing, but I shouldn't have to remind you that the use or practice of any form of magic will get you killed if seen by anyone other than those who favor the magic ban. Don't worry, I won't say anything and neither will they.
Merlin still felt worried but not as much as when the prince held a sword to her neck. It was a relief knowing there were people who would keep her secret, and clearly not all the royals would see her executed for having magic.
You better put your bag in there. I've already cleaned it for you.
Gaius said gesturing to the door up the few steps at the back of the physician's chamber, Although, Merlin... I should say thank you for saving my life.
Merlin smiled at that and went up into her new room to unpack.
Candles lit her room as Merlin stood up on her bed to open the shutters and look out her window. Night had fallen over Camelot after all that had happened. Merlin had spent some time coming to grips with the fact that two Pendragons knew her secret and one of them wasn't even alive. She didn't know why she trusted the vampire completely though now she didn't have that uneasy fear of being discovered for what she was anymore. Despite this, she decided she could trust them to keep her secret and went to sleep excited for what the next day brings.
Gaius said down to read the letter from his little sister Hunith, it was as if her could hear her very voice with each word he read.
My dear Gaius, I turn to you for I feel lost and alone, and don't know who to trust. It is every mother's fate to think her child is special, and yet I would give my life that Merlin were not so. Ours is a small village and she is so clearly at odds with people here that if she were to remain, I fear what would become of her. She needs a hand to hold; a voice to guide; someone that might help her find a purpose for her gifts. I beg you, if you understand a mother's love for her daughter, keep her safe. And may God save you both. Hunith
Gaius placed the letter down, looking off toward the door to Merlin's room. How horrified his sister would be to know that two more people knew of Merlin's 'gifts' even if they would keep it a secret. In quiet contemplation Gaius considered how best to help Merlin with her magic. Unable to think of anything he folded up the letter and went to bed.
Morgana stood at the large window in the room, staring out it at the platform where Thomas Collins had been beheaded that afternoon. The sound of the door behind her opening and closing caused Morgana to turn, to her surprise it wasn't an angry Uther coming to question why she wasn't attending the feast. It was her sister.
Mother's stalling him.
Arthur said leaning against the wall next to the window, It's getting to stifling in there to stay anyways.
Morgana looked closer at Arthur, You're paler than normal.
Morgana did her best to pull back the sleeve of her dress raising her arm to her sister.
No.
Arthur said pulling the sleave back over her sister's arm and moving it away, Anyone but you.
You need blood.
Morgana countered.
Arthur shook her head, You know why it can't be you. Not since our body's changed.
Morgana sighed; she knew exactly what Arthur was talking about. Since they had started to develop, Arthur had suddenly found her bite, sensual, since then she refused to bite her mother or her sister, she had never approved of biting her father for multiple reasons.
Morgana looked around it wouldn't be long until Uther came looking for her.
Shall I escort you to your chambers?
Arthur inquired.
Morgana gave her a contemplative expression, Stay with me, like in our younger years, until this threat is over.
Arthur gave her a relieved expression, I'd be glad to.
The two sisters retired before King Uther had the chance to scold Morgana.
Merlin.
Merlin rolled over not wanting to wake up.
Merlin.
Merlin lifted herself up by her arms refusing to fully leave her lying position.
Merlin.
Merlin could swear the strange voice was coming from the floor as she moved over to stare at it from the bed.
Merlin!
Gaius' voice called from the door.
Merlin had jumped at that and was staring at the door with slight fear in her eyes. She breathed a sigh of relief recognizing the voice as her uncle's.
Getting up, she slipped on her boots before wrapping her scarf around her arms before leaving her room in her night gown.
I got you water. You didn't wash last night.
Gaius said placing a bowl of porridge on the table. Merlin noticed the bucket of water was also on the table right next to the bowl Gaius had placed next to it.
Sorry, I'll wash before I leave.
Merlin said looking at the bucket of water suspiciously.
Help yourself to breakfast.
Gaius said. Merlin sat down, dipping the spoon into the bowl and withdrawing porridge with it. She stared at it suspiciously before deciding whether to eat it or not. Gaius however interrupted her contemplations by knocking the bucket over. Merlin shocked by this instinctively used her magic to freeze it midair as the water splashed out of it. Merlin realized what had happened and glared at Gaius who gave her a side glance before both looked back. Instead of falling however, Merlin wanting to still be able to wash up, sent the water and bucket back onto the table as though it hadn't been knocked over at all.
How did you do that?
Gaius asked genuine wonder in his voice, Did you incant a spell in your mind?
I don't know any spells.
Merlin quickly said truthfully shaking her head before slowing, I think. I've never done that before.
She gestured to the bucket sitting on the table, Normally, it just falls.
So what did you do?
Gaius inquired, There must be something.
It just happens.
Merlin answered. Gaius turned his head away as Merlin grabbed the bucket not wanting to put off her washing up any longer.
Well we'd better keep you out of trouble.
Gaius said giving her some privacy.
Merlin was just finished with getting dressed for the day (in a simple dress with her jacket and scarf) when the door to the physician's chambers burst open as a knight she hadn't seen before came in holding an injured servant (who had a dagger in his side) in his arms followed by Gaius and Arthur.
Put him there.
Gaius said to the knight.
What's going on?
Merlin inquired making everyone take notice of her presence.
Oh, Merlin, get me something for the pain.
Gaius ordered momentarily forgetting Merlin didn't know anything about his work, yet.
Despite her lack of knowledge, Merlin spotted a vial of something she instantly knew would be what Gaius had asked her for. She snatched it and handed it over to him.
Lucky guess.
Gaius said after doing a double take on the potion she handed him.
We'd better go.
Arthur said to Sir Leon as the sight of Morris' blood was becoming too enticing for her to safely stay. The two left just as Gaius pulled the dagger from Morris' side.
Care to explain to me why you have four knights in the dungeons?
King Uther said pacing before his throne, Arthur standing in front of him hands clasped behind her back. She was paler than she had been yesterday.
They were acting in a way that contradicted the knight's oath...
Arthur said before being interrupted.
I do not care about their behavior!
King Uther bellowed, I want to know why these men have been arrested.
Arthur did her best to mimic a sigh, They were tormenting Morris, and then one of them managed to throw a dagger in his side, which is enough to fail them on becoming...
Arthur!
King Uther shouted making Arthur, Morgana, and Ygraine all jump, This does not warrant them to be imprisoned...
I am not going to let them injuring a servant slide like you would!
Arthur interrupted stepping up to speak level with her father with each word, Let them spend tomorrow in the stocks if that satisfies you. But if word gets out that we allowed even our knight trainees to get away with murdering a commoner, regardless of whether it is an accident or not, we will lose the people's favor. You know damn well they out number us.
That earned Arthur a slap across her face.
Not in Camelot.
Uther stated.
The city, no.
Arthur agreed before countering, But the other villages, they do. For the sake of appearances, you have to show justice. At least Morris didn't die... As far as we're aware.
Uther lifted his hand up, Fine, a night in the dungeons then a few hours in the stocks.
Arthur stepped back before bowing and leaving the council chambers with Morgana following behind.
Gaius laid a clothe over Morris' dead body before turning to Merlin.
I feel like I could of saved him, if only I remembered how.
Merlin murmured.
Knew.
Gaius corrected.
Merlin looked up, That's what I said.
No, you said remembered.
Gaius pointed out, Both Arthur and Morgana do that too.
This isn't exactly a good first two days at Camelot.
Merlin muttered.
Yes, well you can help me until I find some paid work for you.
Gaius said, You fortunately have a good head for physician work be a shame to let it go to waste.
Right.
Merlin said.
Take this to Arthur.
Gaius said handing her a vial of red liquid.
This isn't?
Merlin guessed.
It's better than nothing.
Gaius said.
It took Merlin some guess work and a few questions asked of the guards before she finally found Prince Arthur's chambers.
She stood before the door wondering whether she should knock or just go straight in. She decided to knock ignoring the very, very great urge to just burst in.
Enter.
Arthur's voice permitted from the door.
Merlin opened the door finding Arthur sitting at a table in the center of her chambers, sunlight from the window behind her lighting up the room. She walked forward.
Arthur looked up and then did an annoyed gesture, Close the door, Merlin.
Merlin stopped before saying, Right.
Holding up the vial and a single finger before turning and closing the door then turning back to the prince, Um, I have your blood...
How's Morris?
Arthur inquired turning back to her paperwork.
Merlin went silent before moving over to place the vial on the table.
Arthur snatched it looking at it closely, I hate it when I get the small vials.
It was then that she looked up and realized Merlin hadn't answered her question, This isn't...
Morris is dead.
Merlin said bluntly, That was the only clean vial apparently.
Arthur turned facing the table again tapping on the vial, Bronwen's not going to be able to take that well. He may have been a bit dull, but he was still a good servant, a good man. To Morris.
She removed the stopper from the vial and downed the blood of Morris in one gulp. Instantly color began to return to Arthur's skin but only faintly and for a brief moment Arthur's pupils were vertical slits still retaining the circle in the center before returning to their normal circular shape, This isn't enough.
Arthur got up leaving the now empty vial on the table. She walked over to the window to look outside before realizing Merlin was staring at her.
Merlin realizing she was staring the moment Arthur turned to look at her. Merlin coughed trying to hide her blush before inquiring, Um, the eye thing wasn't mentioned in the book.
If Arthur could blush, she would have, instead she just rubbed the back of her head looking at the ceiling, Oh, that. Gaius and I have a theory that vampires are a predictor-like creature to humans. That is how my eyes naturally are. Took everyone that know about what I am by surprise when my eyes suddenly looked normal. I think it's a disguise ability for vampires to hide among humans, because they return to that state when I drink blood or go to draw it from a victim.
Arthur's gaze was upon Merlin's neck when she said the last words, her eyes once more vertical. Merlin wanted to leave but somehow couldn't standing frozen in place as Arthur drew closer to her.
Well, they are somewhat hypnotic...
Merlin said trying to distract Arthur.
Yes, they are, even when they appear normal.
Arthur said now closer to her, But they are nothing compared to the pleasure of my fangs.
Arthur was suddenly upon her and was brushing away the red scarf exposing the girl's neck. Merlin trembled unable to move away as her eyes suddenly turned gold, her magic trying to protect her but refusing to harm Arthur. Arthur mouth widening revealing her fangs went in for the life fluid of Merlin.
Merlin waited for the pain. It never came. Instead she felt Arthur's fingertips brush against her neck.
I'm sorry.
Arthur's voice trembled, I want you, your blood. Go, just go while I can still control myself.
Arthur couldn't look at Merlin while Merlin pulled the scarf back up around her neck. She was about to walk to the door when she remembered the vial. Turning back to scoop it up, Merlin then left the prince alone.
The moment Arthur was alone in her room she slammed her first into the table ashamed of what she had almost done.
That night Lady Helen of Mora arrived at last.
With the door to the Great Hall of Camelot opening to permit Lady Helen to greet King Uther and Queen Ygraine along with Dukes Tristan and Agravaine de Bois along with the rest of the court. Only Princess Morgana Pendragon was among them while Lady Amber took Prince Arthur's place among the count Lady Helen did.
Lady Helen.
King Uther said rising from the throne followed by his wife and queen, Thank you so much for coming to sing at our celebrations.
The pleasures all mine.
Lady Helen said after bowing to the king and queen.
How was your journey?
Queen Ygraine inquired.
Oh, the time it took, your majesties.
Lady Helen said slightly frustrated at the length of her journey.
King Uther wrapped his arm around Queen Ygraine's, Well it's always worth the wait.
It will be.
Lady Helen said fidgeting with her necklace. Something both Morgana and Amber noticed.
They then went on with the greetings between the Court and Lady Helen.
Congratulations on your elevated positions, Duke Tristan, Duke Agravaine.
Lady Helen said once she got to the brothers of the queen.
Thank you, Lady Helen, took a lot of convincing.
Duke Agravaine said.
Yes, I am certain, his majesty didn't grant such titles easily.
Lady Helen said holding her polite smile.
Actually, my brother was referring to our younger sister.
Duke Tristan said with a jovial, She seems to think we don't deserve such positions.
The three of them laughed briefly before Lady Helen turned to see the one person she hadn't greeted yet.
Now here is a sight rarely seen at events.
Lady Helen said, Greetings Lady Amber.
Lady Helen.
Lady Amber said, I'm afraid it's difficult for me to attend even matters of the court. The prince has need of my services elsewhere unless he is unable to attend himself.
I do hope the rumors aren't true.
Lady Helen whispered. Rumors of Lady Amber being Prince Arthur's mistress had sprung up recently after both had matured. These rumors had become practically a death sentence if heard by the queen from anyone.
I can assure you both myself and the prince remain virgins.
Lady Amber whispered, Those are not among the services I provide.
Will you be attending the banquet?
Lady Helen asked. It would be a first since Lady Amber hadn't attended any event, ever.
I'm afraid not. Arthur's become ill. He should be able to attend, I am merely here on his behalf.
Lady Amber said with a smile, He sends his regards.
Well he'd better attend.
Lady Helen said with a slightly malicious smile hidden behind a veil of concern, I wouldn't want him to miss my performance.
Merlin.
Merlin rolled over hearing the voice disturb her sleep again this morning.
Merlin.
Frustrated enough, Merlin got up and scrambled to the floor certain the voice came from below.
Merlin?
Merlin?
Gaius' voice came from the door with was open.
Ah!
Merlin said twisting around so she was staring up at her uncle, Uncle you scared me!
What were you doing listening to the floor?
Gaius inquired.
Merlin started scrambling off the floor, There was a voice calling me from under the floor.
Gaius sighed leaving the room.
Merlin left her chambers dressed for the day.
Did you ever study magic?
Merlin inquired.
Uther banned all such work twenty years ago.
Gaius replied. Merlin got the feeling he did given Arthur and Morgana seemingly coming to him often with magic problems or questions.
So, maybe.
Merlin surmised.
What did your mother say to you about your gifts?
Gaius inquired changing the topic.
That I'm special.
Merlin said solemnly, That I can't use it responsibly.
Yes, well she did ask me to look after you.
Gaius said. He then handed her a bowl of porridge and some vegetables, Eat up, when you're finished I need you to take a preparation to Lady Helen. She needs it for her voice.
Merlin nodded at him.
Merlin made her way through the castle towards Lady Helen's chambers after getting lost three times. After checking to see if she was in and receiving no response, she entered. She placed the preparation on the vanity table before noticing a strange straw doll. Picking up the straw doll she turned it over but found nothing more about it. She did feel magic emanate from it though. Placing it back to where it had been, Merlin noticed the cloth covering a book. This drew her attention as she moved the cloth away to pick up the book and was about to open it when she heard footsteps. Placing the book back down and the cloth over it she turned around to find Lady Helen standing in the door way.
What are you doing in here?
Lady Helen asked.
I'm...
Merlin stuttered as Lady Helen caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Merlin seemed to fumble before stepping away from the vanity table, Um, I was asked to deliver your preparation for your voice. It's on the table.
I see.
Lady Helen said moving over to the vanity table and seeing nothing out of place, You may leave.
Merlin left slowly before bolting away once she was far enough from Lady Helen's chambers.
Merlin was halfway through the courtyard to the draw bridge when an arm wrapped around her shoulders. Merlin jumped turning around to face the person who had touched her.
Easy.
Arthur said all dressed up as Lady Amber, I realized you don't know your way around Camelot. So, since I'm running around as Lady Amber until Thomas Collin's mother is caught and dealt with, I could show you around.
Merlin seemed to calm down a bit, but she was still paranoid.
What happened?
Arthur asked her.
Um, maybe we should go somewhere else.
Merlin said pointing towards the lower town.
Alright, I could introduce you to Gwen.
Arthur said leading Merlin into the town.
Merlin had explained everything she had seen in Lady Helen's room while they wandered around the town. Arthur found it all suspicious especially the book and the fact that the mirror was covered. They were on their way back to the castle when a girl with dark skin and dark hair joined them.
Hello, Lady Amber.
Gwen said before seeing Merlin, Oh, sorry, I'm Guinevere, but most people call me Gwen. I'm the Princess Morgana's maidservant.
Right, well, I'm Merlin...
Merlin said holding her arm out for Gwen to shack it while Arthur let them, But most people who know me, just call me freak or bastard or idiot, or a mix of those together.
Well that isn't nice.
Gwen said.
Neither is shaking hands in front of a noble forcing her to take a few steps back.
Arthur commented.
Don't be a prat, Arthur.
Merlin said before realizing she had just called her by her actual name, Uh, I, uh, mean my lady.
Arthur and Gwen laughed before Arthur explained, Gwen's been in the know since Lady Amber was invented. She does my hair.
Hey, you've gotten good and doing it yourself.
Gwen said, So, you told her.
No, Gana beat me to it.
Arthur said still offended by that fact.
Ah. So, Merlin how are you adjusting to Camelot so far?
Gwen inquired.
Is it normally this chaotic?
Merlin asked given everything that had gone on since she arrived.
Depends on what you mean.
Gwen said, Busy? Little less when there isn't an event. Threat? Yeah, pretty much.
Worse if father doesn't see reason, which usually happens whenever magic is involved with anything.
Arthur said.
Oh, well I'd better get back to Gaius.
Merlin said, Nice meeting you, Gwen.
Nice meeting you too, Merlin.
Gwen said.
That night the royal family (save Arthur who attended as Lady Amber) enjoyed dinner with Lady Helen.
Will you sing for us tonight?
King Uther asked Lady Helen.
You will have to wait, Sire.
Lady Helen responded.
You will not deny me.
King Uther said.
If Ygraine had died, Uther's interest would have shown more, however (and since Ygraine still holds it against him), since Morgana's arrival, Uther kept his interests mostly to himself. It didn't help that he was genuinely wanting to have Lady Helen sing for them.
I'm saving myself for my performance tomorrow.
Lady Helen said.
So, you can stop pestering her about singing for us.
Queen Ygraine said.
Will everyone be there tomorrow?
Lady Helen inquired.
Who would dare miss it?
King Uther stated.
You're son perhaps?
Lady Helen offered.
Prince Arthur's unfortunately been ill of late.
Lady Amber said much to Lady Helen's ire, However, he will be well enough to attend tomorrow.
How wonderful.
Lady Helen said.
Pity you can't attend, Lady Amber, your company would be much better than Arthur's.
Princess Morgana stated.
That brought Lady Helen's attention, You won't be attending?
I'm afraid Lady Amber's health isn't always as well as it is these past few days.
Queen Ygraine said, It would be wonderful if you could, but you always seem to fall ill when such events come around.
Yes, besides Arthur's been wanting to hear you sing while I share no such interest.
Lady Amber said.
Oh, you poor thing.
Lady Helen said, Perhaps you've never heard the right person singing before.
Princess Morgana suddenly got up, Lady Amber, I think it's time for you to retire.
Lady Amber looked down. She was certain this wasn't the real Lady Helen from all that was said. But she got up intentionally wobbly, Yes, it be best that I retire.
Princess Morgana and Lady Amber left them before suddenly turning once they saw someone with ebony locks head straight towards the dungeon.
While the royals were enjoying dinner with Lady Helen, Merlin was soundly asleep. Unfortunately, the disembodied voice disturbed her again.
Merlin.
Merlin opened her eyes blearily as she groaned at being disturbed from her sleep.
Merlin.
Merlin slammed her fist into her pillow realizing this time the voice won't leave her be. She detangled herself from the bed covers and slowly got dressed. Once she was properly clothed she left her room.
Once she was out of her room, she noticed Gaius asleep on his bed that had been moved back to its place after everything that had happened Wednesday. She was just putting on the coat she had worn when she was disguised as a boy when she noticed Gaius' covers were partially of him leaving him cold. His snore had made her jump slightly. It was when she had accidentally knocked over a goblet that she caught just in time that she froze. Gaius however snored on and simply turned over facing away from her. That left her feeling relieved she hadn't woken him up. She would have left after that but couldn't do so without magicking his covers so he properly under them.
Merlin.
Merlin followed the voice as it seemed to be leading her to of all places the dungeons. She was unaware of the two royal sisters following her.
The two sisters followed silently behind Merlin as she went into the dungeons stopping upon spotting the guards playing with dice. Merlin thinking of a way to get past them suddenly got an idea and waited for the next roll. As soon as the guard rolled the dice, Merlin used magic to send the dice rolling further away from the entrance. Morgana whispered Cleaver.
to Arthur who simply rolled her eyes.
Merlin kept the dice moving before going down the stairs and picking up a torch and lighting it. Morgana and Arthur followed her from behind.
Merlin.
This time both Morgana and Arthur heard the voice though the guards behind them (after retrieving the dice and returning to their table) did not. It came from further within the dungeons.
Merlin.
Since when was there a passage way leading further down beneath the castle in the dungeons.
Arthur muttered to Morgana as Merlin turned away from the cells and followed the voice down a pathway hidden behind the steps down to the cells. If one didn't know about it (or following this voice) one wouldn't even notice this path.
Merlin.
The voice said now sounding as though it was echoing along the walls. Merlin ventured further in still unaware of her tail. The hallway turned from carved stone to rough and cave like. It was a naturally formed cave tunnel and it led her to a massive cave with a platform like ledge where the tunnel led. A single mound of rock stood on equal height to this ledge. Merlin stood at the edge looking around while Morgana and Arthur remained in the shadows.
A deep chuckling was heard from all around them as the sound bounced off the walls of the cave.
Where are you?
Merlin called out trying to find the source of the voice.
It was then that a large creature suddenly came down from above with golden eyes landing on the mound. A dragon sat before her.
I'm here.
The dragon said causing both Morgana and Arthur to be shocked that such a creature both lived and could speak. Merlin however was simply shocked by a dragon still living. The dragon simply made himself comfortable before saying, How small you are for such a great destiny.
Why, what do you mean?
Merlin inquired curious about this destiny.
Your gift, Merlin, was given to you for a reason.
The dragon said.
So there is a reason?
Merlin asked hopeful. Gaius had so far not been able to coax anything out of Merlin and Merlin hadn't really gotten into trouble or used her magic that if noticed could of gotten her executed so, no questions were asked.
Ha, Arthur is the Once and Future King who will unite the land of Albion.
The dragon explained, But she faces many threats from friend and foe alike.
I don't see what this has to do with me.
Merlin stated.
Everything.
The dragon said, Without you, Arthur will never succeed. Without you, there will be no Albion.
Arthur had felt a little smug about the first bit but upon hearing Merlin was the important part of her succeeding she felt offended.
What about Morgana? Arthur's sister?
Merlin inquired.
Despite being acknowledged by the queen, Morgana must never come into her power.
The dragon said flatly, Should she, she will become the darkness to your light. You young witch and I mean that in the terms of female warlock not priestess of the Triple Goddess fallen to dark magic, but you cannot allow Morgana to even learn of her magic. She must never become a threat, nor can she meet Arthur's bane.
Arthur unfortunately couldn't stop Morgana in time.
I resent that!
Morgana called out stepping forward to the dragon, I would never betray my sister not for anything in the world. And I already know what I am.
Merlin turned surprised to see not only Morgana but also Arthur (dressed as Lady Amber) had followed her.
It appears I am mistaken, I believed you had a brother not a sister.
The dragon said with a chuckle, However, none of us can choose our destiny. And none of us can escape it.
Arthur stepping forward wondered something.
What if we've already faced that destiny and failed.
Arthur mused.
That is not possible.
The dragon said.
Arthur looked up at the dragon, But what if it is? I and Morgana have had dreams that felt like memories. In these dreams I am the son of Uther Pendragon and my mother did truly die because I wasn't a vampire...
What did you say?
The dragon asked looking more closely at Arthur. He sniffed her three times, You are among the dead young Pendragon.
Yes, I am a vampire.
Arthur reinformed him.
How curious.
The dragon said laying back down. He seemed to be thinking, Only sunlight would be death for you. All other threats wouldn't be capable of killing you.
Arthur looked confused so did Merlin and Morgana. Both Pendragons knew Arthur could heal from non-lethal wounds quickly, but they had still treated a mortal wound as though it could and avoided receiving them as best as possible.
But the sunlight doesn't... I was afraid of going out in sunlight when I was young.
Arthur realized.
You can be in direct sunlight without burning like those upon the pyre?
The dragon inquired. At Arthur's nod he continued his questioning, Are you aware of your natural instincts?
Another nod, But do you give in to them?
Arthur shook her head before adjusting to nodding, Let me clarify, if you were to suffer from your thirst for blood would you be able to stop yourself from draining a normal human completely?
I've never drained someone against my own will.
Arthur said, I have but I did that to kill them not because of any sort of desire for it.
Interesting.
The dragon said, So, despite feeling the increase in your vampiric power you do not actively pursue it.
At this Arthur nodded once more.
Merlin and Morgana were looking at each other contemplating this and their destiny. Morgana didn't want to become this darkness, yet she felt as though it made sense. However, that ran the risk of betraying her sister and if Merlin was destined to be beside her sister she couldn't become Merlin's opposite. Merlin was thinking along the same lines and how unfair it was to withhold Morgana from learning magic.
Do the three of you have feelings for each other that you cannot explain. Such as something like a bond without even meeting, feeling betrayed unable to trust another or completely trusting the other despite only just seeing the other for the first time?
The dragon asked them.
Yes.
All three of them said in unison.
Not just for each other either.
Arthur said.
Gwen.
Morgana said, She's such a dear friend yet when I first met her, I wanted to strangle her because I felt like she took something away from me that was rightfully mine.
I felt guilty about doing something to you.
Merlin said to Morgana.
I felt betrayed by you and it makes me hate you more than Gwen... Like I'm afraid of you... if Arthur is right, maybe you killed me...
Morgana mused.
I also feel like you betrayed me.
Arthur said to Morgana, And I can't explain how but I feel only slightly like you didn't trust me but it was justified. I just can't help be trust you more than anyone, Merlin, now I know why.
Then what you said is true.
The dragon said, If the three of you have lived through these events already, then you did fail to fulfil your destiny. All of Albion includes magic, Arthur...
Well, being a vampire doesn't allow me to keep that ban, I'm technically a magic creature.
Arthur interrupted.
There are very few ways one can become a vampire, young Pendragon, however, not even Emerys here could do so by magic.
The dragon said making Merlin mouth Emerys as she suddenly remembered the druid name and meaning, Only the Triple Goddess herself could do such. This would explain how and why your mother lives as well as your belief that you, your sister, and Emerys failed your destiny. However, you should remember these events then.
Arthur then remembered her conversation with the Triple Goddess, Yes, I remember now, I asked her to; to allow my mother to survive, she told me I would have to be born a vampire.
I'm the reason why we don't remember.
Morgana said. Everyone stared at her, It wouldn't be fair to me if you both remembered so she, they, wiped our memories, otherwise I would, I would try to kill you, Merlin.
Did you ask her for something? I seem to remember she would give each of us a single wish, but I can't remember mine.
Merlin said.
People I could trust, friends, family. I think we were given a choice about something because of it.
Morgana said.
Arthur looked between Merlin and Morgana, I think I know what it was, you and I, Merlin, in my dreams are both male. I had one after we met and it was of the day when Morris was injured and died. You didn't...
You goaded me into swinging at you resulting in me being thrown in jail and in the stocks the following day which was how I met Gwen.
Merlin said, Oh, we're both female, yet Morgana, you're still female, so maybe, we got to choose our sex we would be born as.
Yes, that's it.
Morgana said.
So, the three of you have been sent back, not simply to any moment in time but to the start of your lives by the Triple Goddess themselves.
The dragon mused, Then, magic must never of become legal. So, it was upon the brink of extinction. With the three of you returning instead of just one, that means that your destiny, young witch, was a warning of a possible future. Perhaps in informing you, Emerys, we assured it. It seems the Triple Goddess needs the three of you silent born girls to save magic from the future you had brought about. That would also leave myself at blame for this. My apologies, Princess Morgana, I still see you becoming the High Priestess but that may be the unavoidable destiny of yourself. I must rethink which destinies are set in stone as I now know not all are.
You're a prisoner aren't you.
Arthur said noticing the shackle and chain upon the dragon's left rear leg.
Yes, I am Kilgharrah, the Great Dragon.
Kilgharrah introduced himself, Your father deceived Balinor the Last Dragonlord into bringing all the dragons into a trap under the guise of a peace treaty. It may be possible his daughter still holds her Dragonlady powers without needing her father to perish, yes, Merlin, Balinor is your father, and if he had known, he would never of abandoned you or your mother for the sake of keeping you both safe.
Merlin's expression was hard as stone yet wasn't without knowing what he had said was true, I will judge that for myself, but because of Uther I was born a bastard daughter... That isn't something one can recover from easily if ever.
Yet, even now, you love your father in your heart. You understand his situation despite your words.
Kilgharrah said, Now you had better return to your rooms.
With that he flew off above them the chain visible and rattling before them.
Wait, wait!
Merlin cried out, Wait, stop. I need to know more.
Gaius opened the door to Merlin's room. The room was a mess which Gaius found very foolish of his niece, especially since she seemed to hardly ever keep it clean, making one unless absolutely exhausted.
Oi!
Gaius said before realizing how unclothed Merlin was as he turned his gaze away when she jumped and covered herself with the covers as Merlin realized how exposed she was, Have you seen the state of this room?
I, it just happens.
Merlin said embarrassed by both being seen in her exposed state and by how messy the room is. She had been drilled by her mother to keep her sleeping arrangement tidy, but she wasn't really a tidy person, but Hunith's efforts were successful and Merlin (outside of her magic) kept her area in their shared hut in Ealdor tidy.
By magic?
Gaius inquire, he was certain it wasn't.
Merlin nodded, When I have a nightmare or am upset while resting, my magic makes a mess of.
She finished by gesturing over the room.
Yes.
Gaius said realizing it was actually by magic but still unamused, Well you can tidy it up without magic.
Gaius said, And then I want you to get me some herbs, henbane, wormwood, and sorrel. And deliver this to Morgana. Poor girl suffers from nightmares.
I know the feeling.
Merlin commented to herself.
After completing the herb gathering, Merlin made her way up to Morgana's chambers in the royal quarters. She swore Morgana's chambers were a nightmare to get to with all the stairs she had to climb.
Merlin was coming into Morgana's chambers while she was preparing for the banquet.
You know I've been thinking about Arthur.
Morgana said going behind the changing screen thinking Gwen had returned, I feel like she's been to confined by having to pretend to be mother and father's son instead of herself. Pass me that dress, will you Gwen?
Merlin looked over and saw the dress and moved to collect it for her.
I mean she can at times be a total jester.
Morgana said as she slipped out of her dress, Just because she has to pretend to be a prince doesn't mean I have to accompany her to the feast. Does it?
Merlin looked up handing the dress over the changing screen.
Well, does it?
Morgana asked again.
Uh, uh.
Merlin hmmed.
If she wants me to go then she should invite me.
Morgana said before saying in a disappointed tone, And she hasn't.
Her tone changed again, So, do you know what that means?
Merlin had been sneaking away after placing the potion down on the table.
Where are you?
Morgana asked looking over the top of the changing screen.
Merlin would have tried to conceal herself and pretend to be Gwen if she didn't feel like that wouldn't work out so she simply said, I'm sorry, your highness, but Gwen hasn't returned yet.
Oh, Merlin, well you're a good listener.
Morgana said, So, as I was saying, it means I'm going by myself.
And I came here to ask you to come with me.
Arthur's voice came from behind. Arthur was all dressed up as the prince she was supposed to be. However, Arthur was as pale as she had been before she had Morris' blood.
Well you're a little late for that.
Morgana said, But could either of you help with this fastening.
I'm here, your highness.
Gwen said looking at both Arthur and Merlin.
Oh, good.
Morgana said as Gwen came over and helped her.
Merlin mouthed how grateful she was at being able to leave but Arthur held her back.
If you want the chance to go with me, then you'll have to choose your answer carefully.
Morgana said to Arthur.
About what?
Arthur said letting go of Merlin and crossing her arms.
So, it's whether I wear this little tease...
Morgana said as she stepped from behind the changing screen followed by Gwen, she held up a revealing red dress to herself, Or give them a night they'll really remember.
Oh, that's lovely.
Merlin said.
Honestly, there is only one choice.
Arthur said walking over, Give them a night they'll really remember, sister.
Morgana grinned, Good answer.
The Great Hall was set up for the feast. The Prince and Princess arrived together with a few comments on Princess Morgana's dress which shocked the knights into silence.
Shortly afterward Gaius arrived with an aw struck Merlin.
Merlin.
Gaius said getting her attention, Remember you're here to work.
Right.
Merlin said looking around for something to do. It was the only way she could attend.
Gwen sidled up to her after Gaius had left.
Some people are just born to be queen.
Gwen said.
Not really a good idea.
Merlin said absentmindedly.
I think she'd make a great queen.
Gwen said.
Oh, sorry if I offended you.
Merlin said realizing she had said her thought out loud, I, uh, we um, Arthur, Morgana and I...
I know she doesn't want the throne.
Gwen said, Doesn't want to ruin Arthur's claim. I think it's brilliant having a woman as a king, not that men being kings are bad...
Actually, it's a weird superiority thing.
Merlin said, They need to prove their better than each other, and they all get behind being superior to women. Kind of dumb. I'd rather a woman for a king.
Oh, but not all men are bad.
Gwen said.
No, but those that are, tend to exploit authority over women.
Merlin said, Really annoying and very sexist.
At least with Arthur as king, that won't be tolerated.
Gwen stated.
Yeah, I'm um, supposed to do something.
Merlin said.
Oh, come with me.
Gwen said dragging Merlin along.
Trumpets announced the arrival of the King and Queen who took their seats with Arthur on Uther's other side and Morgana and Ygraine's. The court moved to their seats but remained standing as Lady Helen moved to the podium. The servants moved to their stations and the band awaited for the King's signal.
We have enjoyed twenty years of peace and prosperity.
King Uther said while the rest of the Pendragons rolled their eyes, It has brough the kingdom and us,
he gestured to his family, many pleasures. But few can compare with the honor if introducing Lady Helen of Mora.
Cheers and clapping at this as King Uther went to take his seat beside Queen Ygraine. The Prince and Princess followed their parents then the rest of the court. The Band struck up as Lady Helen began her performance. It began quiet peacefully as everyone enjoyed but soon they were all nodding off, save Merlin who immediately started to notice when people were beginning to fall asleep during the performance. Lady Helen seemed to have her attention fixed on Arthur unaware of the witch still awake, she began to move from the podium still singing her incantation. Merlin looked around before spotting the chandelier and as Lady Helen reached her crescendo dagger raised, Merlin's eyes flashed gold and the chandelier dropped.
The enchanted sleep upon everyone was broken and people were starting to rise brushing cobwebs away from their face. Lady Helen appeared to revert to Mary Collins the mother of Thomas Collins.
It appeared as though she wasn't dead yet as she raised herself up and with the last of her strength threw the dagger at Arthur. Too shocked to do anything Arthur remained frozen while Merlin's eyes flashed gold once more as time slowed down for her. She tackled Arthur to the ground as the dagger sank into the chair. Neither the Prince nor Merlin were aware that the King, Queen and Princess had watched the girl save the Prince's life. Mary Collins collapsed dead witnessing the failure of her vengeance.
For a moment there was silence as everyone was dumbfounded by what they had just witnessed. Then Arthur and Merlin scrambled to get back on their feet especially since Merlin had been laying ontop of Arthur.
You, you...
Uther was speechless.
You saved our son's life.
Ygraine said able to regain her composure first.
A debt must be repaid.
Uther said after regaining his from his queen's statement.
Merlin was shaking her head, Oh, well...
Don't be so modest.
Uther said, You shall be rewarded.
No, honestly your majesties.
Merlin said rubbing her arm, You don't have to, your majesties.
No absolutely.
Morgana said smiling, This merits something quite special.
Well...
Merlin said intrigued.
You shall be awarded a position in the royal house hold.
Uther said already thinking of the girl joining Morgana's maidservant.
You shall be Arthur's maidservant.
Ygraine beat him to rewarding such the position.
Ygraine!
Uther said rounding on her.
I think that's a splendid idea.
Arthur said smiling.
Well, this is also to teach you not to follow your father's example.
Ygraine said taking another dig at Uther.
Both grumbled.
Merlin was staring at the flame of her lit candle when a knock at her door drew her attention. Gaius entered the room caring something wrapped in red cloth. He was followed by Arthur, Morgana, and Ygraine.
Seems you're a hero.
Gaius said.
Hard to believe, isn't it.
Merlin said smiling at Gaius but being a little wary of the Queen's presence.
No, I knew it from the moment I met you.
Gaius said, Well, you saved my life, remember?
And got caught doing magic by the prince and princess.
Merlin pointed out.
The three Pendragons were sitting (Arthur wasn't she was leaning against a wall) around the room.
Despite that, we now seem to finally found a use for it.
Gaius stated.
What do you mean?
Merlin said slightly cautious of Queen Ygraine.
I think it be better of her majesty explain it herself.
Gaius said gesturing to the queen.
I am not a fool, Merlin.
Ygraine said, I know magic when I see it. Especially when one moves that fast in a dress. Arthur and Morgana have already explained your situation to me, including the assumed time traveling bit.
Gaius looked at the three as if he should have been informed about that.
Gaius even you give bad advice at times.
Ygraine said, And besides now we know why and how Arthur was born a vampire resulting in my surviving a magically binding rule that should of taken my life. I want you to know, Emerys, I've long since lost my good opinion of the ban on magic. I've had a talk with some captured druids before their executions, I promised them that their younger generations will live to see magic free after Uther's death. You are not alone here, and you have people who will protect you from my husband. Besides, I believe you three will make Camelot a better place.
Ygraine nodded to Gaius signaling him to continue with what he wanted to do.
We,
he pointed to himself, Morgana, and Ygraine, saw how you saved Arthur's life.
Gaius explained, Perhaps that's the purpose of your magic.
Our destiny.
Merlin said gesturing to Arthur and Morgana.
Well, in our previous lives it probably would have helped if you had shown me that magic itself wasn't evil before we died.
Arthur said, Probably, part of that destiny.
Hm, a fair point.
Gaius said before handing Merlin the red cloth wrapped item, This book was given to me when I was your age. But I have a feeling it will be of more use to you than it was to me.
Merlin took the item and unwrapped the red cloth from it. A book of magic lay in her hands. She couldn't believe it, her own excitement at finally being able to learn magic. At that moment she seemed to recall seeing this book before.
But this, this is a book of magic.
Merlin said after unlocking it and leafing through its contents.
Which is why you must keep it hidden.
Gaius said.
Otherwise more than your life will be lost.
Ygraine said, Such books were also destroyed during the purge.
I will... I think I have studied every word in this.
Merlin said confusing Gaius, Maybe going through it will help me remember. I've always had this unnerving feeling like I actually do know magic.
And what about me?
Morgana inquired.
I don't think you can stall any longer, Gaius.
Ygraine said, But you need to actually showcase the ability to perform magic first, dear.
Fair.
Morgana said, It's late, father will be wondering where you are, mother.
With that Gaius, Ygraine and Morgana left. Arthur however remained.
I expect you to wake me in the morning.
Arthur said turning to go.
Right.
Merlin said placing the book beneath her bed.
Arthur didn't leave instead she turned around and sat next to Merlin.
I... I am sorry, but I'm...
Arthur said as she drew nearer.
Merlin seemed to understand as Arthur's thirst was becoming unbearable for her. She pulled back her scarf and closed her eyes not wanting to witness it. Arthur brought Merlin closer as she sank her fangs into Merlin's neck and drank deeply from her. For Arthur it was pure bliss for Merlin she was conflicted, it hurt but she wanted to remain there to feel her fangs in her neck. It seemed to end all too soon as Arthur drew back finally slaking her thirst. The fang piercings on Merlin's neck seemed to heal instantly and despite the loss of blood Merlin wasn't suffering symptoms at least noticeably.
Get some rest.
Arthur said standing up, Can't allow you to overexert yourself while you're recovering from me.
Merlin nodded before lying down as Arthur left. Gaius noticed the blood stain upon her lips and knew he would have to make sure his niece was fine in the morning.
She's excused from having to wake me in the morning, I won't allow her to be overworked while she's recovering.
Arthur said to Gaius as she wiped away the blood stain on her mouth.
Thank you, your highness.
Gaius said. Arthur left with thoughts of Merlin in her head.
Notes:
Arthur won't allow anyone she's bitten and drank blood from to be overworked let alone overexert so Merlin gets a free pass on her first day. Hope you enjoyed this chapter.
Chapter 3: Valiant vs Vampire
Summary:
Things play out almost exactly as they had the first time round, until Valiant attempts to kill Ewan.
Notes:
Don't you just love writing a planned-out fanfic and at the last moment of being half-way through you suddenly get a fanfic idea for that specific chapter of your own fanfic and decide it's better than what you had planned so you put it in. Yeah, this chapter wasn't supposed to diverge from the actual plot of the episode, but I felt like the change was worth it. Hope you enjoy.

Chapter Text
The Silentborn Sisterhood
Chapter 3
Valiant vs Vampire
A knight dressed as a commoner walked down the street of the village on the western isles. Torches lit up the street that night as the knight approached a man named Delvin.
I understand you have a shield for me.
The knight said. Delvin nodded his head to signal they should go into the back for privacy.
Delvin presented the shield, With your sword craft and this shield, I guarantee you will win.
Show me how it works.
The knight said.
Certainly.
Delvin said before reciting an incantation upon the shield. The three snakes of the shield's crest came to life. The man was shocked by this at first before moving to try and claim the shield.
When you're competing in the tournament, you pin your opponent under the shield.
Delvin explained, A snake strikes, your opponent will be paralyzed.
Delvin handed the shield over to the knight.
The snakes are now under your command. They will do anything you tell them to do.
Anything?
The knight inquired.
Just say the word.
Delvin said with a smile. The two men laughed together.
Kill him.
The knight said. A single snake struck Delvin on the neck, and the sorcerer fell over. The knight took the shield with him.
The knight was unaware that this entire scene was witness by a lady in the shadows who swiftly left the village heading straight for Camelot.
And where have you been?
Ygraine said arms crossed to her daughter clambering through the window.
Arthur pulled back the hood of her cloak, Investigating a rumor in the Western Isles.
I don't care that you can move fast, Arthur, but the sun has risen, and you have a tournament to prepare for.
Ygraine scolded, Your father will be disappointed if you slack off. Don't you go to bed now.
Arthur groaned as she picked herself off her bed.
No cheating by using your vampire powers.
Ygraine said turning to leave before stopping, Beyond what you need to keep pretending to be our son.
At that moment, Merlin entered with breakfast. She froze upon seeing the queen. Merlin gave a quick bow before moving out of the way.
First, you are always supposed to knock and request permission to enter.
Ygraine said, Doubt my words will stop you. Second, don't let her fall asleep she's been gone chasing a rumor in the Western Isles. So, she needs to be punished for staying up.
Yes, your majesty.
Merlin said.
Arthur groaned letting herself fall back onto her bed only to be magically pulled back up once the door had been slammed shut by the queen's exit.
You have a long day ahead of you, Arthur.
Merlin said.
Why must you torment me as well?
Arthur complained.
It's your fault.
Merlin said snatching some of Arthur's bacon.
The knight from the Western Isle arrived at Camelot by horse. As soon as his horse was stabled, he went to the register and placed his small shield emblem down upon the table.
Knight Valiant of the Western Isles.
Valiant said.
The recruiter for the tournament took the emblem, Welcome to Camelot.
Argh!
Arthur said falling on her back. Merlin was enjoying the show seemingly remembering being the one to suffer Head.
when she was helping Arthur training for the tournament. Apparently having Ygraine still alive meant that Tristan de Bois would take over the job of training the prince.
Get up.
Tristan said raising his sword. Unlike with the memories of Arthur tormenting Merlin with training for the tournament, Tristan did not call out the pattern Arthur had used on Merlin, so when Tristan landed a blow that knocked his niece to the ground, she was very aggravated. It didn't help that it wasn't Head.
Do you have to have an aggressive fighting style?
Arthur asked as she picked herself up.
Know what you're fighting, and you can counter it easily.
Tristan said, Used to be the preferred style in my youth, your father also utilizes an aggressive fighting style. Besides, I'm not the one with enhanced strength or unnatural speed here.
So, you just love knocking me onto my ass.
Arthur accused.
No, I'm punishing you for staying up all night.
Tristan admitted, You ready?
Re...
Arthur started but was cut off as her uncle began.
This went on for longer as Merlin did have other tasks to do besides watching Arthur getting knocked onto her ass multiple times.
Ugh...
Arthur said collapsing into her chair as soon as she got back to her chambers.
So, how did practice end?
Merlin inquired after entering.
Arthur looked at her before tapping the heel of her palm to her ears, Do you hear clanging?
No.
Merlin said shaking her head.
Merlin helped Arthur change from her armor and prince clothes to a nightgown.
It was horrible, Merlin.
Arthur said. Merlin gave her a look and they both knew she had put Merlin through worse. Arthur groaned, Oh come on! Just because we recover memories after the event plays out differently from our past doesn't mean I can't say it was horrible.
Not as horrible as saving your life and ending up your maidservant.
Merlin said, Not exactly fair.
Well what were you expecting?
Arthur said, Your a commoner not a noble.
Arthur felt a tight grip upon her shoulder tightening until Arthur was wincing in pain.
And how exactly is mucking out the stables one of my duties?
Merlin mentioned.
Okay, okay.
Arthur said causing Merlin to relent, We all have our duties. You're not alone in them.
Oh, I'm sure your duties are as demanding as mine.
Merlin stated.
You try dealing with politics and see if you're not wishing to be mucking out the stables right as you're in the middle of a meeting with nobles.
Arthur stated, It's not all girls and glory. Even worse being a woman, nobody listens to you. Kind of the reason everyone thinks I'm a man.
I get it you're under a lot of pressure.
Merlin said.
Yes, well, I'm tired, see you in the morning.
Arthur said flopping down upon her bed. Merlin simply moved her under the covers before leaving.
Merlin walked down to the lower town passing by shops, homes, until she reached the blacksmiths.
Hi, Merlin.
Elyan said upon seeing her, Here for Gwen?
Oh, hi Elyan.
Merlin said taken by surprise at seeing him, Yes.
She should be ready.
Elyan said jerking his head at the door, Head inside.
Merlin nodded at him before going inside.
Oh, Merlin.
Gwen said turning around from her basket of flowers, You startled me.
Merlin looked over her shoulder and saw behind the basket were pieces of armor.
Kind of sad that I pretty much know everything there is to know about armor.
Gwen said looking a little bashful, Morgana, um, wanted to learn swordsmanship and Arthur's been teaching her in secret... I, uh, my brother and I were just making her armor.
Merlin turned to look at Gwen, I think it's brilliant.
Really?
Gwen asked.
Oh, yeah.
Merlin said before leaning over to whisper, You want to know a secret?
Gwen looked at her intrigued and confused.
I used to want to be a knight when I was little.
Merlin whispered.
Really?
Gwen asked. Merlin nodded.
Why don't you now?
Gwen inquired, Arthur's proof it's possible.
Something more important to me replaced that.
Merlin said staring off into the distance.
Oh.
Gwen said before realizing the time and picking up her basket, We'd better get going otherwise we'll be late.
She left first and Merlin followed saying, Right behind you.
The tournament was finally ready as crowds of people gathered around the Dueling Pitch while the nobles took to their seats. The royals (save the king and prince) were situated in the royal box dead center to the outer circle of the pitch behind the wood barrier.
Merlin however was too busy putting armor onto Arthur to be among them.
You do know the tournament starts today, Merlin.
Arthur said given how long Merlin was taking with the armor.
I'm sorry, your highness.
Merlin said before asking, You nervous?
I don't get nervous.
Arthur replied. Merlin knew she was lying.
Really?
Merlin inquired sarcastically, I thought everyone got nervous.
Will you shut up!
Arthur exclaimed making Merlin jump, It's not like I am permitted to show whether or not I'm nervous.
Oh, yeah.
Merlin replied sheepishly, I guess you're fine then.
Do you remember this happening before?
Arthur said. Merlin nodded, Aren't you still forgetting something?
Merlin realized she had forgotten Arthur's sword and quickly grabbed it from the table before strapping it into her belt.
Now that's everything.
Arthur said to her before turning and leaving.
That went well.
Merlin said following after her before turning to head to Gaius.
The crowd cheered as the knights stepped onto the pitch and a few gave a wave basking in the cheering they received. They all gathered before the King.
Knights of the realm, it is a great honor to welcome you to the tournament at Camelot.
King Uther announced, Over the next three days you will come to put your bravery to the test, your skills as warriors, and of course to challenge the reigning champion, my son, Prince Arthur.
Some (including Knight Valiant) looked over at the prince who simply stared onward at his father, Only one can have the honor of being crowned champion and he will receive a prize of one thousand gold pieces.
The chest with these gold pieces was opened and murmurs through the crowd sprung up while some knights glanced at the gold, It is in combat that we learn a knight's true nature. Whether he is indeed a warrior or a coward. The tournament begins!
The king finished with raising his left hand clenched in a fist as the knights moved away for the first match. King Uther however instead of moving to his seat moved over to his son.
I trust you will make me proud.
King Uther said quietly to Arthur.
Of course, her father didn't care about whether she did good only that she won the tournament.
You will be.
Arthur whispered back.
The king took his leave and went to his seat beside his wife and daughter. After that Prince Arthur and another knight with a striped shield of yellow and dark green with daggers upon it stood at opposite ends of the pitch.
Arthur and the knight charged each other slamming into the other's shield. Arthur side stepped the knight's strike keeping her shield against her opponent's. She was assessing him first while holding back. The knight was good but even without going on the offensive, the more knowledgeable observers knew Arthur was winning. Then Arthur allowed herself to be disarmed without making it obvious. The knight was overconfident on his follow up strike and ended up being knocked back as Arthur managed to get his shield loose before knocking it away from him. Despite the fact that the knight still had his sword, Arthur was baiting him into overexerting himself. She allowed her shield to be knocked out of her hands before she struck him in the gut. The knight keeled over slightly winded from that.
Come on.
Arthur taunted, Or that all you got?
The knight growled before raising his sword only to have Arthur sidestep him again, this time she tripped him while taking his sword from his hand. The knight was rolling over onto his back when a boot appeared on his chest and his own sword at his throat. Arthur had won and the crowd cheered their prince.
The knight groaned realizing what had happened, You were just toying with me the whole time.
Arthur presented her hand which her opponent took, I don't rush head long into a fight unless it's absolutely necessary. Assessing your opponent is a better way of learning how to beat them, that and a few years ago you would have been a challenge.
She handed him his sword back. They then gathered the rest of their equipment before leaving the pitch.
The following matches were interesting the large knight won easily while Sir Ewan had beaten the dual saber wielding foreigner. It was Knight Valiant who earned the most favor from the crowd with his brutal aggressive victory just after Arthur's match.
However, only King Uther seemed to view Valiant with favor while the rest of the Pendragons (including the Queen's brothers) seemed to disagree with everyone else.
Knight Valiant looks pretty handy with a sword.
Merlin said to Arthur.
Arthur noted a slight hint if distain from Merlin, Is that a hint of dislike?
I don't know what you're talking about.
Merlin said realizing the tone she had used.
It was at the end of the tournament for the day that Valiant approached Arthur.
I hope you enjoyed the show, your highness.
Valiant said with a bow to Arthur. Merlin tried to keep out of Valiant's gaze.
Congratulations on your victories, Sir Valiant.
Arthur replied feeling her skin crawl under his gaze. Thankfully he wasn't aware she was a woman, still she sympathized with Merlin wanting to get away from this man.
I hope to see you at the reception this evening.
Valiant said before walking away.
Creep.
Merlin said causing Arthur to snort.
Agreed.
Arthur commented.
As they walked away into the castle Arthur suddenly turned, Oh, Merlin, I need you to polish my armor, repair my shield, sharpen my sword, wash my tunic, and clean my boots.
Merlin groaned, Of course, your pratness.
Every single item Arthur had ordered, polished, repaired, sharpened, washed, and cleaned were floating in Merlin's room which she had locked while she skimmed through the magic book.
A knock at the door and Gaius' voice calling, Merlin,
caused Merlin to bolt upright magic book flat against her breasts and every item clanging to the floor. Merlin rolled off her bed stuffing the magic book under a floorboard beneath her bed and scurrying to the door to let Gaius in.
Are you using magic again?
Gaius inquired scornfully at the girl who moved to check if the chest piece of Arthur's armor got banged up in its fall.
No.
Merlin said absentmindedly before turning her head to shake her head at her uncle.
Then how did everything end up clanging on the floor?
Gaius asked not believing her for a second.
I dumped them?
Merlin half answered half questioned.
Very funny.
Gaius said, I just came to tell you suppers ready.
Gaius said closing the door behind him. Merlin sighed, she had even more work to do now.
Knight Valiant of the Western Isles, your majesties.
Valiant said as he approached the king and queen.
We saw you fighting today.
King Uther said, You have a very aggressive style.
It reminded me of my brothers.
Queen Ygraine said before wrapping her arm around King Uther's, And of course my husband's.
Well why settle for anything less efficient.
Valiant said, As my lord said, to lose it is to be disgraced.
I couldn't agree more.
King Uther said as Ygraine released his arm. Uther placed an arm around Valiant's shoulders, Valiant may I present, my daughter, Princess Morgana.
Valiant allowed himself to be turned to face the princess and planted a kiss upon her hand. The glare of Arthur was upon the back of Valiant's head and Morgana seemed to enjoy making her sister fume, silently. Valiant said, My lady.
upon releasing her hand.
I saw you competing today.
Morgana said with a slightly forced smile. She had been warned that he was a creep by Arthur already.
I saw you watching.
Valiant said, I understand the tournament champion has the honor of escorting my lady to the feast.
That is correct.
Morgana replied giving Arthur a side glance only to end up smirking seeing how much Arthur hated Valiant near her.
Valiant looked back and seemed to also enjoy Arthur's glowering at him, Then I will give my everything to win the tournament.
Arthur finally stood before her parents to greet them after the first day of the tournament.
Your majesties.
Arthur said with a bow.
You fought well.
Uther said to her, If a little arrogantly.
And don't you show your distain for another knight like that again.
Ygraine scolded silently, You are the prince.
I don't trust Valiant.
Arthur murmured.
That doesn't matter.
Uther said very seriously, You need to behave like the prince of Camelot. And don't forget to make me proud.
He whispered the last part in Arthur's ear so Ygraine wouldn't hear. She did.
Arthur then turned to great Morgana.
They all seem rather impressed by Knight Valiant.
Morgana said to Arthur now that the knights greetings were over.
I have something about him to tell you.
Arthur whispered in her ear, Not here.
Morgana looked around, This has something to do with you being up two nights ago, doesn't it?
At Arthur's nod the two sisters quietly left Gwen following behind.
Merlin carrying all of Arthur's armor, sword, and shield all wrapped in a bundle down to the armory. She was regretting not doing it before nightfall yesterday.
She was just sorting them out on the table when a hissing sound caught her attention.
Hello?
Merlin called out. The hissing sound stopped, Is there someone there?
She moved from the table looking around the armory. The hissing sound started up again. Merlin looked down toward the sound's origin and was surprised to see Knight Valiant's shield and nothing more. She felt the urge to kneel down to inspect it further but got an ominous feeling about doing just that. She was backing away when she swore, she saw one of the three snakes blink its eye.
Merlin would have gone closer to the shield at that if it weren't for the sword suddenly pointed at her throat.
Can I help you with something girl?
Valiant asked holding Merlin at sword point.
N-no.
Merlin replied backing away, I'm good. I-- I was just returning my master's armor.
Valiant's eyes roamed over Merlin, That doesn't excuse you trying to touch my shield. But if you're looking to apologize prop...
The sudden appearance of another sword this one pointed at Valiant's neck made him stop.
Knight or not, none may have their way with any of the servants.
Arthur said death glare boring into the back of Valiant's head, And tell me why my maidservant is returning my armor here and not my chambers where I need them?
Merlin practically jumped gathering everything back up and sprinting out of the armory. Arthur gave Valiant (who had followed Merlin with his gaze only to end up facing the prince) one last glare before leaving as well.
Arthur slammed her door shut behind her as she entered her chambers.
What were you doing?
Arthur questioned practically shouting at Merlin.
I was just returning your armor.
Merlin exclaimed backing away from Arthur.
Then why were you in the armory?
Arthur queried, I need it for my match today or have you forgotten the tournament lasts for three days.
No, I just thought... One of the snakes on Valiant's shield blinked!
Merlin explained after she realized she had no train of thought.
Arthur sighed or more corrected went through the action of a sigh minus the inhaling and exhaling of actual air.
Why do you think I was gone before the tournament?
Arthur said, at Merlin's confused expression she explained, I went to the Western Isles to investigate a sorcerer selling enchanted weaponry and armor. I saw him give Valiant that shield snakes alive too. Valiant then had the snakes kill the sorcerer after he was given the shield and command of them. But that's not why I'm angry at you.
So, why are you?
Merlin asked confused.
We agree he's a creep, right?
Arthur asked Merlin. Merlin nodded, Well, I swear he would of had his way with you if given the chance. You know exactly what I mean.
Merlin shuddered squeezing her arm knowing full well what certain men in positions of power do to female servants. She had a feeling a certain favor was what Valiant was implying for her to get out of his accusation.
You need to be careful.
Arthur told her, Now, come on, I can't be late today.
Merlin distracted herself from the topic they had just discussed with equipping her prince with her armor.
The crowd cheered while Merlin joined Gaius and Arthur went off to await her match.
Is it my imagination or are you beginning to enjoy yourself?
Gaius asked a grinning Merlin.
It isn't horrible all the time.
Merlin replied. She then whispered to Gaius, I saw one of the snakes on Valiant's shield wink at me.
Well, then, we'd best keep our eyes open.
Gaius whispered his reply.
Arthur seemed to continue her plan of showing off by defeating her opponent quickly without much effort. Valiant continued his aggressive fighting style and a good number of knights were knocked out of the tournament, some fights quite literally.
Arthur joined Gaius and Merlin when her fights were over to watch the last match between Valiant and Ewan.
The fight seemed to show the two knights were evenly matched at first, but Ewan started to get the upper hand, despite Valiant knocking off his helmet.
Valiant then pinned Ewan to the ground and while holding him there with privacy from the crowd he whispered, Strike him.
heard by only Valiant, Ewan and one other.
A single serpent emerged from the shield and reeled back to strike.
Everyone was staring at the prince, blade between Valiant's shield and Ewan's body, a serpent head on the ground.
The moment Valiant's weight was off his body, Ewan scrambled to his feet and shouted, Sorcery! Sorcery, Valiant is using sorcery!
He was pointing at both the snake head on the ground and the still decapitated snake body that was sliding out of the shield.
Valiant stood there like a cornered animal. He had been caught. He only came back to reality when he heard King Uther call out, Guards, arrest this sorcerer!
Valiant became desperate and seeing no way out he said, Kill him!
and the remaining two snakes in his shield emerged and moved towards the prince. However, once they were within scent reach of Arthur they hissed and recoiled slithering away from the vampire.
Valiant didn't even get a chance to reinforce his command as Arthur simply walked forward before swinging her sword in an over exaggerated body spin, decapitating the serpents. After coming out of it with heavy breathing the guards that had come to arrest Valiant were instead dragging Ewan from the arena. Arthur was clearly livid.
Valiant decided to fight his way out of the situation he was now in and with Arthur holding no shield he swung his sword to disable the prince's left arm. Arthur simply caught the blade in her hand, bleeding as the blade cut through her gloves and skin but her grip was stronger than Valiant's one handed force behind his blade. Valiant noticed that despite the vocals and physical actions, Arthur wasn't breathing, in fact he noticed Arthur's eyes were slits and that he (still thinking Arthur was male) had fangs.
Arthur tossed Valiant's sword aside, unbalancing the coward who still clung to his sword allowing for Arthur to gut punch him with enough force to make him both winded and collapse back to the ground. Arthur then rolled him over with a foot shove to his shoulder and once his shield was fully facing her, she stomped upon it breaking Valiant's left arm.
Valiant cried out in pain before being pulled up to lay his weight on his knees and unbroken right arm. Arthur then raised her sword with both hands above her head before bringing it down, decapitating Valiant whose body then collapsed as his head rolled away.
Arthur couldn't hear the cheer of the crowd. The praise of her father for killing a sorcerer before them and saving an honorable knight's life. No, she couldn't hear any of it. All she noticed was the now wasted blood spilling out of Valiant's body. She had acted through instinct upon hearing Valiant's whispered command and seeing the serpent emerge from the shield. She barely maintained enough control over herself to keep acting as though she were human by providing the clear heavy breaths taken by someone running on pure adrenaline, though for her it was bloodthirst. She was thirsty, so very thirsty, she was losing control.
Arthur's eyes scanned the crowd near the open section of the arena before spotting a very worried looking Merlin standing next to Gaius.
Arthur started to slow down her breaths as she pretending to finally be catch it. Her eyes returned to normalcy as she was regaining control over herself. She barely registered her father entering the arena.
Valiant is unfortunately not the sorcerer behind the enchantment upon the shield.
Arthur said turning to face her father.
What do you mean, of course he is the sorcerer.
Uther said.
Arthur held up her hand to prevent any further blatant lies, I had Lady Amber travel to the Western Isles due to rumors of a sorcerer living there, providing enchanted items for less honorable acts. However, as the testimony of a lady wouldn't hold up in your court, I kept silent about her witnessing Valiant receiving the shield from that sorcerer, only good Valiant did was kill the sorcerer to keep control over the serpents.
She then turned to the crowd, Valiant was a warrior, but he proved himself a coward willing to do anything to be named champion. And by rules of the tournament, my actions while to save the life of Sir Ewan and slay one who unlawfully used enchantment, disrupted an ongoing match. I am afraid that I have disqualified myself from the rest of the tournament. May the rest of you, the contenders, have good luck in your matches.
She then turned back to her father, I am not feeling well, I'd better go see Gaius.
Uther understood the message and let his daughter leave the arena.
Sir Ewan went looking for Prince Arthur in the physician's chambers but only learned that the prince had already left and was confined to bed rest until his body recovered from his over exertion from today.
So, Ewan settled for seeing him at the feast tonight that Uther was putting on for the death of the coward Valiant.
To Ewan's surprise, Arthur wasn't present, in fact he was more surprised to find Princess Morgana sitting in his place beside the king and a lady he hadn't seen before sitting beside the queen.
She was almost completely identical to the queen, save the lighter skin color and different hair style, along with the obvious youth upon her features from being younger and only the slightest resemblance with the princess.
Sir Ewan bowed in greeting to the king and queen before finally being able to greet the unknown lady.
Greetings unto you, Sir Ewan.
The lady said.
Forgive me but I have never seen you before.
Ewan said to the surprisingly very familiar lady.
I am Lady Amber.
Lady Amber said, I heard you were nearly poisoned by the Coward Knight of the Western Isles.
Oh, you're the one who informed Prince Arthur about the shield.
Ewan said, I was expecting to see him here.
The prince sent me in his stead as I am now recovered from my rather quick trip to and from the Western Isles.
Lady Amber explained, Unfortunately, he is too exhausted from today and practically collapsed onto his bed. I'll be taking his place for now. Though I will be joining the crowd in watching the matches instead of waiting to hear about them from inside the castle as he was disqualified.
There was a playful smirk on Lady Amber's face that Ewan took as to meaning that she was close with the prince like the rumors suggested.
A real shame he cannot continue.
Ewan said before leaning in to whisper something, The remaining knights and I all agree that he should remain champion as none of us can face him. Mostly due to him slaying Valiant.
Lady Amber frowned, I doubt the prince would be satisfied with all of you giving up the chance to be named champion.
But after seeing him beat down Valiant like that, we all know none of us could beat him.
Ewan said, You know it would be interesting to take you to the champion's feast.
Lady Amber chuckled, Unless Princess Morgana wants to have some fun, that is unlikely to happen.
Well, I hope to see you at the feast.
Ewan said before joining the other knights.
The rest of the tournament went off without any more incidents and Sir Ewan made it all the way to the final match. It was Sir Ewan versus the large bear like knight.
In the end, Sir Ewan won utilizing his speed to defeat the slower stronger knight in between his swings. It was an exciting match for everyone watching.
King Uther walked out into the dueling pitch arena arms raised, Well fought, Sir Ewan.
He reached the knight before turning to the crowd, Sir Ewan has won the tournament.
The crowd cheered, As well as a thousand gold pieces and is your new champion!
The crowd cheered once more as the chest was brought out and given to Sir Ewan who looked slightly uncomfortable.
I thank your majesty for this honor.
Sir Ewan said. Everyone had been expecting some words from the victor given that it wasn't Prince Arthur but they would be surprised by Ewan's next woods, I accept the thousand gold pieces on behalf of my territory, but only because we are in need of them. I however cannot accept being named champion.
The crowd was shocked by this.
And why can you not accept being named champion?
King Uther asked Sir Ewan.
Sir Ewan looked at both king and crowd, Because I did not face your son.
That surprised everyone, After the coward was slain and your son disqualified, the remaining knights and I agreed that since none of us could face Prince Arthur in combat, we wouldn't accept being named champion, and only those among us in need of the gold pieces for our regions would accept it, otherwise we wouldn't accept the gold pieces either. So, your son is still champion.
The crowd began to murmur their own discussions on this, but the general consensus was that Sir Ewan was right. The king seemed to overhear this.
You are truly a man of honor, Sir Ewan.
King Uther proclaimed, Camelot needs more honorable knights such as yourself. However, while I cannot deprive your region of such an honorable knight, I can still grant you the honor of escorting Princess Morgana to the feast tonight.
Arthur noticed that her sister and mother were whispering something between the two of them and missed Merlin sneaking over. She had a feeling she wasn't going to like the outcome.
Queen Ygraine stood upon from her seat, Since in Sir Ewan's own words, my daughter and I would like to offer an alternative to that, the honor of taking the Lady Amber to the feast, who I should not have to remind everyone, rarely ever gets to attend such events. We mean no disrespect to you, Sir Ewan, but Princess Morgana insists.
King Uther was about to say something when he caught Queen Ygraine's eye. He was saved from embarrassment by Sir Ewan who said, Why would I be disrespected? I view it as great an honor and privilege to take Lady Amber to the feast as though I were to escort, her highness the Princess Morgana.
And as though to signify how much he viewed as such, Sir Ewan approached Lady Amber who was flabbergasted and glaring at Princess Morgana. He took her hand and kissed the back of it shocking Lady Amber, I will see you tonight.
Despite this alteration everyone seemed pleased as Sir Ewan left the arena.
You planned this.
Arthur rounded on Morgana, You just did want to go with him...
No, I figured you can experience what it's like to be the one escorted to everything for once.
Morgana countered.
Come my lady. We must get you ready for tonight.
Merlin teased.
Arthur was practically dragged while Morgana and Merlin guided her back to her chambers.
Do you seriously have nothing to wear?
Morgana asked while scouring through all of Arthur's dresses.
Arthur couldn't answer due to currently being submerged in the bath Merlin had drawn for her. Merlin was having fun washing a very disgruntled Arthur.
Well, she is supposed to appear as a lady not a princess.
Merlin said looking over her shoulder, How about looking among the Camelot colored dresses.
Arthur's head finally surface, and she simply glared at both Merlin and Morgana. This was not her idea of fun at a champion's feast, even if there was no champion.
I know.
Morgana bemoaned finding nothing that pleased her, But I want Lady Amber to look her best.
Arthur didn't miss the mischievous grin on Morgana's face.
And I would like to be able to enjoy this as champion.
Arthur said, But as I ruined that, I figured I could simply step back and watch you be the center of attention. But you and mother just had to put me in your place.
You're not the only one who doesn't want to be the center of attention all the time.
Morgana said. Both Merlin and Arthur snorted.
At that moment Gwen burst into the room holding something in Camelot's colors.
Gwen...
Morgana barely got out before Gwen held up what she had be carefully carrying.
What do you think.
She said presenting quite possibly the most regal dress in Arthur's chambers (not counting Morgana's currently worn dress).
Merlin, Morgana, and even Arthur despite Merlin's attempts at blocking her vision, all stared at the dress that they all knew was Gwen's work.
That's the one.
Arthur said. Merlin dunked her back under and Morgana mouthed something at Merlin, clearly angry that her sister had seen the dress. Gwen simply laughed while she lay it out on the bed before joining Merlin.
Sir Ewan stood before the entrance to the banquet hall awaiting the Lady Amber. He had already seen Princess Morgana enter the hall followed by her maid servant, neither had given anything away, nor the surprisingly participating maidservant of Prince Arthur, Merlin was her name as the tall raven-haired girl entered with the court physician.
All he could remember was their mischievously bright smiles as they glanced at him while entering the banquet hall.
And then he heard the sound of ornate footwear. He turned on the spot and saw quite clearly why those three girls had given him such smiles.
Lady Amber descended the stairs looking surprisingly quite timid. But that was hardly noticeable as she looked more like a princess than a lady. Her red and gold dress outmatched Morgana's dark blue and silver dress. Lady Amber's short hair was expertly done up and covered with jewels and pearls, a very ornate head wear that went perfectly with the finely cut dress. A mere red silk shawl with golden lining was draped around her shoulders and hung between her arms and body.
But it was as she got closer to Sir Ewan did, he realize where he had found her very familiar.
I hope I did not keep you waiting long.
Lady Amber said still timid by all of this.
Not at all, your highness.
Sir Ewan said bowing to her and planting a kiss on her hand. Arthur felt more than a little revolted by the action.
You mean, 'my lady'.
Arthur said surprised by Sir Ewan's words.
Ewan shook his head, No, I don't think so.
He then stood up, How could I not recognize my savior. Besides you're not really hiding them.
He pointed towards her mouth. Arthur quickly covered her mouth as though in embarrassment.
Don't worry, your secret is safe with me.
Ewan said leading her into the banquet hall.
The entire banquet hall gasped upon seeing Lady Amber for the first time. Many did double takes not just at Lady Amber but also Princess Morgana who wore a smug expression seeing how her sister was more regal looking than herself, along with a slight pang of jealousy that she has only herself to blame for causing this.
It was King Uther who looked gob smacked. Queen Ygraine looked as pleased as Princess Morgana.
King Uther cleared his throat as he regained his composure, Camelot, I present to you, the winner of the tournament, Sir Ewan of Balor.
Cheers rang out.
Arthur let Ewan go and join the knights who stayed for the feast.
She was soon caught by the arms of two royal figures, her mother and sister.
Well, do you like this?
Ygraine asked her daughter.
Arthur was about to answer when Morgana answered for her, Of course she does.
No, I do not.
Arthur retorted.
Not so loud.
Ygraine said pinching Arthur's arm. They watched Agravaine and Tristan sidle up to Ewan and the knights, You can't be so loud.
They were silent for a moment simply gliding through the crowd.
Now, don't you two run off to go flirt with your maidservants.
Ygraine said letting go of Arthur. Both princesses gasped and made vain attempts at denying such actions, I blame your father for this. But need I remind you both, you need to keep up appearances, and that means letting men try and woe you.
The two girls sighed, Yes, mother.
Good.
Ygraine said, Now I need to make sure your father isn't bring down more trouble upon Camelot.
She left them after that. Morgana departed from Arthur as many a nobleman seemed to swarm her, and she spent the next hour entertaining them.
It wasn't until hours later when Arthur decided it was time for Lady Amber to retire for the night that she was able to escape the feast. Merlin of course managed her own excuse and followed along.
Why did I let you and Morgana put me up to this?
Arthur said as Merlin helped her out of the dress.
Because you liked Gwen's dress.
Merlin said. She had just carefully placed it away when Arthur whirled her around and sank her fangs into Merlin's neck.
Arthur had been doing this since she had entered her bloodthirst during her fight with Valiant.
Arthur released Merlin after a few seconds and Merlin clamped a hand over her already healing puncture marked neck.
A little warning please.
She said to the mostly nude vampire.
I'm sorry... I haven't been able to completely control myself, since...
Arthur trailed off.
Merlin helped her finish undressing before leading her to her bed, Good night your pratness.
Arthur gave a groggy glare, Good night, clotpole.
Notes:
So, original plan, Arthur let Ewan get bit by the snake and the story goes on as normal save extra guards keeping an eye out for possible assassination by snake, saving Ewan, still ending in Arthur fighting Valiant, just less need to have Valiant successfully fight a vampire. Instead, the idea you read above jumped into my head three days ago and I ran with it. Next two chapters will be combined into a two part story, while still being two separate chapters. After all their events are literally a two part story.

Chapter Text
The Silentborn Sisterhood
Chapter 4
The Afanc
The Princesses of Camelot Part: 1
Nimueh bathed a clay egg in her scrying fount while citing and incantation. After tapping the clay egg with her index finger a heartbeat began. The egg glowed with the heartbeat revealing the small form of an Afanc within the clay egg. Sending the egg into the water of her scrying fount, Nimueh knew it would reach Camelot's water supply where it emerged.
The Afanc egg started to crack as the Afanc was breaking free of it. Nimueh watched Camelot through her scrying fount, malicious glee on her face.
Gaius knelt down next to the slumped body of a man, face down, while waiting for Merlin to arrive from assisting Arthur.
Aren't you scared?
The soft sassy voice of Merlin suddenly broke through Gaius' examination causing him to jump.
Are you trying to stop my heart?
Gaius asked his niece.
No.
Merlin said sheepishly.
Then you have the answer to your own question.
Gaius said, I'm the court physician, Merlin. This is part of my job. Most of the time there's nothing to be scared of...
He had rolled the slumped man over and flies flew away from his face as he was greyish sickly pale with blue veins practically pultruding from his skin. The man's eyes were glossed over and appeared blind beyond any recognition of their former color. He was clearly dead. Gaius gave Merlin a glance finding a very worried look on her face as though she was certain this was magically caused and was eying everyone around them before he himself turned back to the body.
People mustn't see this.
Gaius said, They'll panic.
Merlin quickly grabbed something nearby to cover the corpse while people were walking by, and Gaius was looking for a wheelbarrow.
Dad, Elyan, here's your sandwiches.
Gwen said placing them down on the table.
Oh.
Tom chuckled before picking up a packaged sandwich and sniffing it, Mmm, what's in it?
It's smoked pigeon.
Liliana answered.
But I'd say there's more smoke than pigeon.
Gwen added.
You two are too good for us.
Tom said to the amusement of his wife and children.
After Liliana kissed her husband she said, And we've done some watercress soup for tonight.
Don't tell me, with more water in it than cress?
Tom joked. They all laughed. Tom hugged his daughter and kissed his wife one last time while Elyan and Gwen were saying goodbye for the day.
I'll see you later.
Gwen said heading for the door.
Okay.
Tom responded, Bye.
Merlin and Gaius were pulling a cart across the drawbridge when Gwen and Liliana came up from behind them. Each holding flowers for their royal employers.
What are you doing?
Gwen asked the two of them. Liliana however wisely kept her mouth shut and kept going.
Um, just moving something.
Merlin said moving from the front to the back of the cart after Gaius has mouthed, Get rid of her.
to her.
Looks heavy.
Gwen stated.
It isn't really all that heavy compared to making Arthur look good.
Merlin said before gesturing towards Gwen, Someone get you flowers?
Gwen had been giggling at Merlin's comment about Arthur when she recovered looking down at the bouquet of flowers in her hand, Oh, no. Would you like one? A purple one.
Merlin took the flower from Gwen and placed it in her hair.
Purple suits you.
Gwen said before amending, Not that I'm saying red doesn't suit you.
Um, thanks? Well, uh, see you.
Merlin said before turning to help push the cart with Gaius pulling from the front.
Bye.
Gwen called before realizing her mother had already left.
Gwen entered Princess Morgana's chambers with a bright smile upon her face. This pleased the princess who had suffered a terrible vision of her maid servant being terribly sick.
You look happy.
Morgana pointed out.
I picked these for you.
Gwen said as she presented the flowers to the princess.
Oh, that's so sweet.
Morgana said taking the flowers.
Something to cheer you up.
Gwen said enthusiastically, I know you're not sleeping well.
Morgana froze biting her lip. She had just had a vision in which Gwen and Liliana fell onto the grown from a new disease last night.
You cheer...
Morgana didn't get to finish as the sound of hurried footsteps belonging to none, but Arthur could be heard outside her door.
No sooner had they heard her rushing up the stairs did they see Arthur knock open the door looking inside and before Morgana could say anything she said, Council Chambers, immediately...
And she was gone before Morgana could so much as ask why.
I've never seen anything like this before.
Gaius said examining the head of the corpse they had brought back. Its unnaturally pale skin and highly visible blue veins along with the white eyes were unnerving. Merlin felt like she did see this before and that there was only one cause.
Do you think it could be some kind of plague?
Merlin asked hoping she was wrong on this being magic.
No, I fear something like this could never come from nature.
Gaius answered, But who has this kind of power?
How about Nimueh?
Arthur's voice came from the door.
Both Gaius and Merlin jumped before Merlin started her apology, I'm sorry, I'm late.
This was more important.
Arthur gestured to the body, Father wants you in the Council Chambers, immediately, you'll have another to look at.
Gaius gave Merlin a grim look.
We'd better hope this isn't Nimueh.
Was all he said.
Another servant with the same affliction lay on the ground, a platter with a dropped goblet of red wine lay next to him. Gaius immediately dropped down and began to examine the body.
What's happened to him?
King Uther inquired.
You don't look too surprised by his condition, Gaius.
Queen Ygraine pointed out.
Gaius?
King Uther said now suspicious that his Court Physician had withheld a report.
I Don't know, sire.
Gaius answered the king's first question, This is the second case I've seen today.
And why wasn't the first reported to me?
King Uther demanded.
I was attempting to find the cause, when I received your summons.
Gaius stated.
What did you conclude?
King Uther asked worry of the worst-case scenario in his voice that only Gaius and Ygraine could detect.
I don't think it's time to hurry to conclusions.
Gaius said trying to ease the king's mind, The scientific process is a long one.
What are you concealing from me?
King Uther asked not falling for Gaius' attempts.
Sire, I have seen nothing like it.
Gaius sighed, The victims are dying in 24 hours and it's spreading fast.
Two victims suddenly found dead with no sign of such a disease beforehand does not make it spreading fast or a 24 hour time period.
Arthur commented.
Well, I haven't been able to fully examine this yet.
Gaius said back, The bodies are dead recently, within the hour, as they are still warm. As for any signs beforehand, the coloration takes time to begin to become visible. I'll admit to the fact that two does not mean that it's spreading fast, but without knowing how it's spreading, we can't slow the process.
But what is the cause!
King Uther demanded.
I think we should say the cause, the most likely cause, is sorcery.
Gaius answered.
King Uther turned to Arthur while Ygraine (who had been standing behind her husband) moved to the very distressed Morgana who hadn't let go of Gwen the moment she had seen the body.
You must find who did this, Arthur.
King Uther said.
I doubt that.
Arthur muttered.
You must find them, Arthur.
King Uther said, Conduct door-to-door searches, increase your presence in the town. Double the guards on all gates. And Arthur, lend the physician your servant.
Father?
Arthur said surprised.
We need Gaius to find a cure.
King Uther said urgently, He needs all the help we can give him. If Gaius is right, believe me, the city will be wiped out.
Uther took a moment to look around. He led Arthur to the side for privacy.
This is the kind of magic that undermines our authority, challenges all we've done.
Uther stated, If we can't control this plague, people will turn to magic for a cure. We have to find this sorcerer quickly.
I fear this sorcerer was never even in Camelot to begin with.
Athur theorized.
Nonsense.
King Uther said dismissively, You will find them here in Camelot and then they will be made an example of.
The increased presence of the guards was felt immediately in the village surrounding the citadel. The sudden searches of homes, however, wasn't a welcome condition of the increased protection, especially since Prince Arthur personally led them. However, the elders within the village knew better and managed to keep the younger folk from making things worse.
Merlin and Gaius watched as Arthur and two knights kicked open the door to a crude building. Gaius (feeling that his niece didn't need to do anything stupid) grabbed Merlin's arm and led her back up the path to the citadel.
Of course, Merlin had to spot a man afflicted by the plague that was now spreading through the kingdom as Gaius had predicted.
Gaius.
Merlin said before rushing over to the diseased man, Gaius, he's still alive.
I'm afraid there's nothing we can do for him.
Gaius stated.
But we haven't tried.
Merlin countered.
If we don't know what the disease is then how can we cure him?
Gaius questioned.
He half expected Merlin to suggest using magic but was surprised by her answer.
You're right.
Merlin said glumly now away from the man, There's no point in curing him just to get him killed.
Finally something wise comes out of you.
Gaius said. He pulled Merlin and pointed to the knights finished with their search of the building, They're suspicious of everyone. This is not the time to be using magic.
Gaius pulled Merlin along, Science will lead us to the source of this disease.
Gaius was swirling a vial of whitish liquid that had been taken from the corpse of one of the victims of the new plague over to a candle, so he could examine it.
What are you doing?
Merlin asked pausing in her cleaning of the room.
I am examining the contents of that man's stomach.
Gaius explained while rolling the vial around over the candle's flame.
Will that tell you who did it?
Merlin wondered now completely abandoned her cleaning to move over to her uncle.
No.
Gaius answered while pouring some red liquid into the vial, But it might tell us how it's spread. One thing I do know, this is magic of the darkest kind.
Merlin remained surprisingly silent while returning to her cleaning.
It was after that moment that Arthur burst through the door with guards in tow.
Over there.
Arthur said pointing to one guard while another searched the immediate area next to the door, I'm sorry, Gaius. We're searching every room in town.
What for?
Gaius called turning to face the prince.
The sorcerer.
Arthur answered with a roll of her eye at Merlin.
And why would he be here?
Gaius inquired.
I'm just doing my job.
Arthur explained exasperated.
The guards had begun looking over the books, though they didn't bother looking through them.
Well, we've nothing to hide.
Gaius said placing his hands behind his back, Go on then, search.
The guards and Arthur searched the room before the prince glanced at the stack of books, What are these books and papers?
My life's work.
Gaius explained coming over to the prince, Dedicated to the understanding of science. You are quite welcome to read through them if you wish.
Perhaps another time.
Arthur said placing the book she was holding down. As she turned, she spotted a door, What's this room up here?
It's my quarters.
Merlin answered stepping forward.
And what do you expect to find in there?
Gaius asked curiosity about the answer in his voice.
I'm looking for material or evidence suggest the use of enchantments.
Arthur answered. She was already walking up the steps before entering her maidservant's quarters.
What have you done with the magic book I gave you?
Gaius asked Merlin having leaned in and whispered the question to avoid being overheard by the guards.
Merlin, come here.
Arthur called from her room, Look what I've found.
Merlin walked up into her room wondering what it was that Arthur had found.
Arthur was just standing in the middle of it.
Well, you can at least keep your room clean.
Arthur commented on the tidy room her maidservant had, But I'm afraid I'm going to have to ruin it by searching everything.
I just got everything put away.
Merlin said to herself as Arthur rummaged through her cupboard.
You say something?
Arthur asked pretending she didn't just her Merlin's complaint.
Merlin shook her head as Arthur moved to check the bedside table's draws. Merlin began tidying up the mess Arthur was making immediately after she was done searching her room.
Everything seemed to by fine as they continued on this until Arthur knelt down to search under her bed. She merely patted around under it before pausing. Unknown to Gaius and Merlin, Arthur had excellent vision in the dark and could clearly see the concealed magic book under the bed tucked away out of sight. Arthur simply straightened up and looked at her maidservant.
Nothing here.
She said to Merlin.
The two left Merlin's room. The guards had stopped searching the physician's quarters.
How long do you think it may be before you find a cure?
Arthur asked Gaius stressing on the importance of him finding one.
Depends on how many interruptions I get.
Gaius said stressing his irritation at being disturbed from doing exactly what he was ordered to.
Of course, I'm sorry.
Arthur apologized, This will be the only time. We're finished here.
The guards followed Arthur out of the physician's quarters.
Did you know she could see in the dark?
Merlin asked Gaius.
Gaius gave her a surprised look, No, we have to hide that book better.
Maybe you shouldn't ask me about it in front of the guards.
Merlin countered.
I whispered.
Gaius reminded her.
You were lucky they were making enough noise to not be overheard.
Merlin scolded her uncle, Were you trying to out me?
I would never do that.
Gaius said offended by Merlin's accusation. Merlin didn't feel reassured though.
Let's just get back to finding out the cause of this.
Merlin said as she began cleaning up the room that was in an even bigger mess than when she had started earlier today.
Nimueh watched as the afanc emerged from the water reservoir of Camelot, now fully grown. Roaring at its emergence from the waters. Its time in the water reservoir was enough that the magic of the creature left the water tainted still but now the creature itself was the true source of the enchantment upon the water. Nimueh shifted her scrying to see the many corpses littering the castle courtyard. Her smirk was highly evident.
Arthur entered the throne room where her mother and father awaited her report.
We've searched everywhere, the entire city.
Arthur explained trying to sound confident instead of worried about her father's imminent reaction to the bad news.
Nothing?
King Uther inquired seeing no sorcerer in chains nor a head missing its body.
Not a single sign.
Arthur said confidence lost.
I want you to impose a curfew.
King Uther ordered, No one is to be allowed on the streets after the great bell.
Father.
Arthur said losing all pretense of a masculine voice.
And cordon off the lower town.
King Uther continued his order.
I can't do that.
Arthur urged knowing how badly it would affect the village.
This disease is most effective in the lower town!
King Uther nearly shouted moving down on his daughter, Let's isolate it. Stop this disease from spreading.
What about the people who live there?
Queen Ygraine asked her husband.
Don't you think I haven't considered it?
King Uther said turning toward his wife, What else can I do?
He challenged both of them. Neither were anything but silent, so He continued, I have to protect the rest of the city.
Arthur merely bowed wishing she could sigh in frustration which Queen Ygraine did. Arthur then left to carry out her new orders.
What's the difference about this victim?
Gaius asked Merlin.
Um, she's a courter?
Merlin answered unsure.
Sometimes I do wonder whether your magical talents were given to the right person.
Gaius commented, Is she or is she not?
Merlin looked at the dead woman on the table once more taking note of how fine the clothing was, She is a courter.
Precisely.
Gaius said moving around the table.
But how does that help us?
Merlin asked wanting to give Gaius the chance to explain it to her.
Because it narrows down how the disease is spreading to only one possibility.
Gaius explained, Courters seldom go down to the lower town. So, what does that mean?
Because water is the only thing shared across all the people of Camelot regardless of status.
Merlin answered before saying, You think the disease is spread through water?
Merlin, you are a prodigy.
Gaius commented.
Elyan woke up surprised he wasn't woken sooner. He turned over to look for his sister in their small cottage.
Gwen, you in here...
He stopped abruptly upon seeing his sister's gravely ill body as she was struggling to take in air.
Father!
Elyan said heading towards the door frame of their parents room only to stop in it seeing his tear-stricken father holding his mother who was just as sickly as his sister.
Father, we need to take them to Gaius.
Elyan said.
That roused Tom from his tears.
Let us hope he has found a cure.
Tom said lifting his wife up and carrying her from his home followed by his son carrying his daughter.
But we need to be sure.
Gaius said going for a bucket.
Gaius!
Elyan's voice rang through the spiral stair.
A moment later and Elyan carrying Gwen burst through the door followed by Tom holding Liliana.
Gaius took one look at both before doing this best to make room.
Can you cure them?
Tom asked after setting his wife down.
Elyan looked up a small hope in his eyes.
I'm sorry, there...
Gaius started
The sound of the door been thrown open and the sudden appearance of Arthur holding Morgana in her arms startled everyone.
One look at the princess was enough and the grave expressions of Uther and Ygraine behind Arthur told them everything they needed to know.
Please tell me you've found something.
Uther said as Arthur laid Morgana down next to Gwen who the princess immediately tried clasping her friend's hand.
I was just telling Tom here that I have no cure.
Gaius said before continue, But I've found a lead.
Merlin however wasn't listening as she examined the two small puncture marks in Morgana's neck before realizing how unsteady Arthur was.
You didn't...
Merlin whispered to Arthur.
She's, my sister.
Arthur said looking down, I had to try something.
The water?
Uther's voice drew the two girls' attention back to the rest of the occupants of the physician's chambers.
I was sending Merlin off to collect some to confirm my theory but now, it is the only lead we have, your majesty.
Gaius said.
Uther turned to Arthur who did her best to appear ready to fight whatever he wanted her to.
Go down to the reservoir find whoever is behind this and get them to fix this.
He growled.
Yes, father.
Arthur said bowing. Were it not for Merlin she probably would have stumbled forward.
I'll come... to light your way.
Merlin said as though it were obvious.
Uther didn't so much as acknowledge this, but Ygraine gave her a smile as the King and Queen left.
The caves beneath the citadel were a vast network of tunnels which held multiple different entrances, the reservoir was among the higher-level caves. This allowed for restricted by public access to it.
Stumbling against the wall as the sickness was trying desperately to kill that which cannot be killed, Arthur remained standing while Merlin was giving her a side glance.
The growling from within was highly concerning.
I'm having memories pop up of Gaius and I coming down here and... An Afanc.
Merlin finished off.
So the growls have a name.
Arthur tried to lighten the mood as she lifted herself up regaining some strength.
No it's the source of the sickness.
Merlin said side eyeing Arthur.
Do you remember how to kill it?
Arthur said looking down at her sword as though it were as useless as breathing was for her.
Science.
Merlin said not elaborating further.
Arthur simply stared at her, Well, that's comforting.
They ended up reaching the water reservoir itself finding no creature along the way. Looking into it they both jumped back as a creature emerged from the water roaring. It looked like wet reddish brown clay with yellowish white teeth and claws. It was completely soaked.
Merlin reacted fast raising her torch and citing an incantation. The wind took the fire and engulfed the Afanc which perished in fire and wind leaving nothing behind.
Uther, Ygraine, Morgana, Arthur, and Merlin all watched Gaius rummage through the water before pulling up a cracked eggshell turning it over.
Nimueh's mark, that was indeed an Afanc.
Gaius said turning to Arthur and Merlin while handing the king the shell.
Despite the sickness lifted from everyone the moment the Afanc died causing joy across Camelot including the King this single bit of information seemed to ruin the mood for him far worse than the sickness itself had when Morgana had fallen ill.
Will I never be rid of her?
Uther groaned before storming out.
Ygraine did not follow.
All of Camelot owes you a great debt, Merlin.
Ygraine said to the sorceress, I wish we could repay that.
You don't owe me...
Merlin started but was interrupted by Arthur's lips pressing against her own in a gentle kiss.
Ygraine simply chuckled as she and Gaius left the girls alone.
The moment Arthur broke away from Merlin she was immediately kissed by Morgana as well who seemed to enjoy the sound of displeasure that Arthur made at her sister attempting to steal away her maidservant.
That is for saving my life.
Morgana said when they parted, And some retaliation against my sister.
Merlin felt very confused as though somehow, she had become a prize both sisters would fight over.
Rage, a mere maidservant had instantly destroyed her Afanc. Nimueh watched as her mistake and the younger half-sister of her apprentice gave such loving embraces to this... Emerys it could only be Emerys. But it did not matter if the prophesied one would protect what she had made for that monster she would have her vengeance.
Merlin, you will pay for this.
Nimueh screamed.
But rage alone was not the only thing she felt. Confusion was greater, how had Arthur who had avoided water all together fallen ill and yet remained mostly unaffected beyond mere weakness? What's more was how had Ygraine survived?
Notes:
I knew the ending feels rushed and it pretty much is but after Gwen, Liliana and Morgana getting sick there was now a time crunch on killing the Afanc, this is where the time travel bit comes into play as Morgana is vital to future events along with Gwen. I also realized I could keep the Afan contained to a single scene instead of the mess after it emerges from the water for Gaius and Merlin in the show.
Next chapter will diverge from canon massively.
