Art: It wasn't the crash that made us, but the debris

Summary:

Art for 2024 ACBB by SlantedKnitting

When Arthur buys a new flat, it should mean that everything in his life is slotting into place. Instead, he can’t stop going on bad dates, his sister won’t get off his back about mental health, and the cupboard doors keep mysteriously falling open.

When the ghost who haunts the flat reveals himself, Arthur decides to help him finish whatever unresolved business he has that’s keeping him from properly passing on. Once Arthur gets rid of this ghostly Merlin figure, he can go back to getting his own life in order.

Of course Merlin has a poor memory, and as Arthur tries to dig into Merlin’s life, he gets used to having a ghost around his home.

Notes:

Once again I had the opportunity to work with the wonderful slantedknitting. She has written a wonderfully poignant story which was a joy to illustrate. There are references to the 1980s which was a glorious decade for fashion and I had fun painting the characters with big hair and bright colours and shoulder pads.
This has been a really difficult year for me I took on some challenges that did not go as planned and as a result have struggled to complete this work. I have not done as much as the piece deserves and will endeavour to add some extra if I get the chance.
Thank you to Slantedknitting for continuing to write stories that keep me in the fandom and to Tari-sue, clea2011, Polomonkey and Camelittle for all their support.

(See the end of the work for more notes and other works inspired by this one.)

Notes:

I hope you like what you have seen. I used gouache for the ghost Merlin as watercolour would not have shown up on the blue paper. It was tricky but I think it turned out ok but it was strange not being able to build layers and use the highlight of the paper. Its always fun to do dividers I chose poppies for remembrance and enjoyed depicting journals and typewriters before everything went digital, from that point of view, traditional art although imperfect seems rather fitting.
A few days ago I had someone leave some rather nasty and derogatory comments on a previous collaboration regarding the quality of my work. Just a reminder, I am human, I'm not perfect and I am an amateur, I do this in my own time, for the love of the fandom and out of respect and admiration for my wonderful writers. I do this because I enjoy it, I try my best and I want to improve.
