Chapter 9: Never bully my woman

Summary:

Eva and reader go to a bar to have some fun, when some drunks harass reader about her height. Denmark decides to speak up

Chapter Text

Eva slammed down her pint with a happy gasp, some slight foam still lingering on her lips after downing her beer. Nothing hit the spot like a fresh beer, the taste never stopped being refreshing. Remembering after battles or during a long night where she would sit along a large bench, or a old wooden bar with a large log fire and pelts, surrounded by her fellow warriors as they celebrated into the night. Though mead and wine had been part of their history too, nothing went down as smoothly as a beer. You laughed quietly, sipping your own drink, Eva had always been more extroverted than you, she loved a party and she loved having fun, often encouraging you to go on adventures with you. Though your social battery ran out a lot faster than hers did. One thing you were sure of, Eva certainly enjoyed her beer, her drinking tolerance was so strong, she could match with the likes of Germany and Japan, able to outdrink even America. She was a fun-loving troublemaker with a heart of gold, she just liked to get into mischief and make memories, but she was never someone who was intentionally cruel or hurtful. In her youth she used to be wild and stubborn but in later years toned down this attitude greatly, learning to mature and grow.

"Are you having fun, sødling?" she asked fondly, she always made sure to check in and make sure you were coping. If you needed cuddles, she would wrap you in blankets and lay with you for hours cuddling. If you felt sad, she would have a film marathon of whatever the fuck you wanted to watch. She always knew that taking care of your mental health was crucial. During your relationship she had become adapted to your quiet nature, it brought out her protective side.

(Y/N) shifted shyly, nodding at her "Ja" you mumbled, sometimes you worried of becoming selfish with how doting Eva was towards you, you kept wanting more. You had always been a naturally introverted person, but you were having fun. You could have a laugh, be carefree, make mistakes and just let your hair down, but if you ever had too much Eva would never judge you. You'd find less stressful ways to have fun for a while. Eva smiled fondly, ruffling your hair affectionately and ordering another drink, keeping you close and chatting casually with the bartender and some other customers. Grinning brightly and laughing in amusement as she shared banter. Sometimes you found it hard to believe you were dating the incarnation of Denmark, after you had announced that your relationship, the other Nordics had been stunned, Denmark was so soft, anxious and fiercely protective around you. It was a match made in heaven and you balanced each other out in the best ways, she'd become less bossy, trying to control her temper more as to not upset you. She was even less controlling, knowing how anxious it made you, often going with the flow, she just wanted to make sure you were safe.

You peered around the bar from the corner of your eye, curiously taking in the people with whom you were enjoying a drink with. Sharing the space of the establishment and simply wanting to have a memorable evening among friends. You spotted a group of people staring in your direction and giggling at you, causing a gnawing anxiety to build in your stomach. You thought maybe they may have been laughing about how much Eva was drinking, given she had a strong alcohol tolerance. But you had a bad feeling, a situation you had faced many times before. You were used to people mocking your height, you'd been tolerating it for years. "I'm going to the loo" you mumbled, you needed to wash your face a little, perk up and push these thoughts from your head.

Eva looked concerned but kissed your head affectionately before you wriggled free to excuse yourself, she trusted you to not get into trouble, she just hoped you weren't feeling sick. You wandered towards the female toilets nervously, keeping your head bowed in shame. Trying not to panic as your anxiety gnawed at the back of your mind, you were already prepared for the barrage of potential taunts, you just needed to block it out as always.

"Hey shorty, you know this place is for grown-ups"  one mocked

"You come here with your mum girly?" another jeered

You bowed your head, refusing to give them the satisfaction of a response, these people acted like they were still in high school, never having grown up and getting off on making other people's life a misery. Didn't they have anything better to do in life? You were used to this by now, you'd always been short for your age, but that didn't make you any less of a woman or an adult, you pushed open the toilet door with a sigh.

You splashed water on your face, sighing with relief as the cool water hit your cheeks, all of your previous anxiety fading away, allowing you to breathe. Gripping the sides of the porcelain bowl like a lifeline, taking slow and deep breaths, trying to relax yourself. You couldn't help but feel a little bitter at your genetics however, why couldn't puberty have made you taller? You were dating a giant, she towered over you in comparison, but she was a softy and she was your cuddly teddy bear. You had never cared about the height difference before, but sometimes it got to you. All you had wanted to do tonight was to come out to a bar and have some fun, yet there would always be that asshole who had to ruin the fun.

"Assholes" you muttered bitterly, just what was it that made them look at you as a freak of nature? You'd always been mocked for your height, you tried to ignore it but sometimes people just knew how to hit where it hurt. Isolating you and drawing out your flaws so that everyone could admire them. You dried your face and headed for the door, praying they had left and you could get out of here, escape into the night and never look back. You pushed open the toilet door, your gaze fixated at the bar where your lover stood.

Maybe you could ask Eva if you could go somewhere else, somewhere where you felt safe, you didn't want to face them, you couldn't bring yourself to.

"Hey little girl are you lost?" a voice sniggered

You growled under your breath impatiently, you couldn't take this shit anymore.

You stormed over to the bar, gripping your wine glass and necking it in one gulp, the pleasant dryness of the wine dancing on your tongue, fueling your anger and numbing your pain. It helped you forget, it made you feel strong, bigger than you were. You then stared down the bartender, pushing your wine glass across the bar "One shot of (Favourite spirit) please" you snapped sharply. You needed something stronger so you could black out their voices, so they couldn't hurt you anymore.

Eva raised an eyebrow suspiciously, sipping her second drink, trying to piece together what had changed between you and the time you were in the toilet, your body language had changed drastically. You seemed hostile, defensive, as though you were hiding something. She knew you weren't a heavy drinker and usually you were sensible about mixing drinks "You ok Honig?" she asked cautiously, she could see how upset you were. Hoping it wasn't something personal you had been trying to hide out of anxiety.

"Its nothing" you snapped, you didn't want to worry her and you didn't want to be reminded, all you wanted to think about was having some drinks and dancing the night away. You hated the fact that you felt so patronized, you weren't a child for crying out loud. You didn't want to talk about it, you didn't want to think about it, it only made you madder the longer you stewed.

Eva wasn't buying it, she'd never seen you this pissed off before, and it took a lot to do that, remembering how you nearly kicked America's ass when she wouldn't let up on the short jokes. The girl had been wary around you ever since, knowing that she needed to find new jokes. But just what had triggered you from being sweet and patient to short tempered and hostile in such a short period of time. She peered across the bar to where you had just exited from, still sipping her drink. A group of twenty somethings were sat around a table, watching you like hyena's, they kept grinning and laughing at you, the cogs slowly forming in her mind. Unless they were planning on a practical joke they would have done it by now. If it was a personal inside joke why did they keep laughing at you? Suddenly it clicked as to what was going on, oh hell no she wasn't going to stand for this.

These assholes had narrowed you out as their victim, they were mocking you for your height, why hadn't she seen it earlier? She would have chased them off in an instant, but she had been so oblivious. Nobody picked on her girlfriend if she had anything to say about it. Sure she teased you with affectionate nicknames, but out of love not malice, munchkin, princess all non demeaning names. Her icy blue eyes darkened like the dark clouds of an oncoming storm, her Nordic blood raging through her veins. Gripping her glass so hard it began to crack under her grip, the bartender wincing in the background. How dare these assholes bully you, she wouldn't allow anyone to make you feel like shit. She slowly approached their table, a menacing aura surrounding her, how she wished she had her axe right now to scare the shit out of them. But she would have to make do with her strength for now. Her heeled boots clacking on the wooden floor of the bar with a ripping echo.

"Babe?..." you trailed off timidly, they weren't worth it, you didn't want her to get into a bar fight because you were annoyed by some jerks.

Eva approached the table, raising her leg through her long red trench coat to kick the table with the heel of her boot, the group staring at her in confusion, wondering what she was doing. She then brought it down with a swift kick, the table spilling causing all the drinks to topple onto the group of people tormenting you. The sound of glass crashing and clinking on the ground loudly. The girl shrieked in panic, jolting up in an attempt to brush the drinks off her clothes. The men glared up at Eva in rage, displeased about their alcohol being wasted and spilled on them, having been embarrassed in front of a possible date or friend "Hvad Fanden?!" they snapped angrily.

Eva scoffed, so they were all talk when they were able to act in a group but when confronted by someone stronger they buckled under the pressure. "Such a big man making fun of a girl for her height, is that your calling card for getting laid" she mocked coldly nodding at the girl. They made someone else feel like shit so they could impress a pretty face, what a loser. The men panicked, shrinking under her gaze, upon being able to take in her height more closely, realising how she towered over them. Eva was very tall, at least 5'10 for a woman, her heels making her even taller, but she owned it with pride.

her blue eyes pierced them like knives, she used to be really scary during her Viking years, even causing trouble for the likes of Sweden more than once. Fearless, proud and headstrong, she wasn't the type to back down from a fight. If they wanted to mess with someone it would be her, they could leave you out of it. She grabbed the collar of the guy who had been mocking you, yanking him towards her face, watching him cower under her gaze. "You look at min pige funny again? I'll blind you" she warned, nobody bullied her girl, nobody pushed you around. He needed to be put in his place, just to make him realise how pathetic he really was.

The guy panicked, realising how much he had fucked up here, piecing together why this girl had approached them in such an angry state. he had no idea you were her girlfriend, assuming you were friends, maybe sisters. This chick was inhumanly strong and scary, something about her screamed danger "No... problem" he babbled. He would have nightmares for weeks about those steely blue eyes of hers. She dropped him on his ass with a loud clutter, to which he began to crawl away, muttering under his breath about a scary woman. She glared down at the group one last time before they began to scramble out of the bar, proving their cowardice.

Eva then sighed heavily, patting down her coat with a disinterested look, hoping she didn't get much spillage on her coat or jeans, she liked these clothes. But then sometimes things had to get messy and there was just no avoiding it. But the most important part was that the rest of the evening was peaceful and you could go back to smiling again. Turning towards you with a bright smile as if nothing had happened, watching you jump in surprise. She then approached you, nuzzling you fondly before turning to the bar tender "Another round" she asked cheerily, the bartender nodding. You softened, too stunned for words, feeling your heart flutter in your chest as if she was a goddess. Wondering how cool she must have looked back when she was a Viking. She had just strolled over and kicked their ass because they made you cry. She knew how much it hurt you when people made fun of you for your height, she knew how much self doubt you carried and how sometimes you had down days. But she was always there to bring you back up again. She loved you so much, she would take on the world just to make you happy, you nodded bravely "Hell yeah" you agreed. This was a cause for a celebration, to remind yourself of how badass your girlfriend was. Eva then leaned across to kiss you playfully, placing her arm around your shoulder protectively, making sure nobody looked at you funny again. You nuzzled against Eva, her blonde hair tickling your cheek. You never had to feel scared when she was around, for she would always protect you.
