It takes a lot to catch Tartaglia, 11th of the Fatui Harbingers, off guard. Between surviving three months with the monsters of the Abyss at age fourteen, fighting his way up from square one through the ranks of the Fatui to his current position, and maintaining his facade as “The Greatest Toy Salesman in Snezhnaya” in the eyes of his youngest and most mischievous brother; yes, it would take a lot to find him in a truly tight spot.
Waking up in a body that existed nearly 3,700 years ago in the land that had yet to become Liyue? That would be disorienting even for a god. And speaking of gods, the only person he can turn to happens to be one. Here's hoping that the younger Zhongli is as friendly as the one Childe has grown close to.

“You both crave and love destruction and care for living beings.” Morax tuts softly, his hand is still on Childe’s cheek. “How miserable you must be.” There’s almost a sick delight in those words.As if he is pleased that there is someone more messed up in this world than he, an honest to gods war archon.
“I get by.” Childe quips lightly and Morax tilts his head, delighted. “In this future.” He hums, voice low like it emits from the earth itself, a rumble like a purring cat. “Do I…” he leans forward, tilting Childe’s face up, hand moving ever so slightly closer to his mouth. “Do I kiss you upon these bloodied lips?”

February 14th. Valentine’s day.
That was the day Childe had quietly announced to Zhongli that he’d be going back to Snezhnaya and travel all around, off to complete his Harbinger duties.
Childe goes back to Snezhnaya to complete his duties with a promise of returning, and Zhongli will wait for him for eternity if need be.

What haunts me still exists. To eventually be faced and conquered. To dispel its fearful hold on my sleeping mind, but what haunts him, I found, has already departed this world. And yet lives on in his heart and mind, torturing him with a guilt he has carried for thousands of years.

Zhongli suffers through survivor's guilt from multiple events of his past, a condition he has kept well-hidden from his friends and colleagues, but Childe discovers the depths of his suffering after establishing a relationship with the reserved god. Unable to hide it any longer, Zhongli opens himself to Childe's help.
And Childe learns what it's like to walk in the archon’s shoes.

Summary
Fucked senseless.
That's what Childe had promised to Zhongli in the heat of the night, still sheltered under the awnings of the port city. The lanterns had shone bright, and Childe felt daring.
Days later, Childe comes to the realization that maybe… maybe that was a bit too much for their first time. He can’t believe he finally gets the ex-archon into bed with him, and he manages to have the oldest living being in Teyvat crying for his dick. Sheesh. Stroke a guy’s ego, much?
But ever since that night, it’s been radio silence.
Days turn to weeks, and although Childe knows they are not joined at the hip, despite what a certain traveler may assume, he cannot help but worry.

“You’re not…” Childe’s head may have been angled like a baffled puppy, but he couldn’t help it, “Put off by all of that?”
As the disk of orange dipped below the Liyuan waters and the twilight sky remained illuminated by dusky remnants of what had been, Zhongli’s golden-edged features took on a radiance of their own. It wasn’t the lights playing tricks on him when Childe saw the man’s eyes gleam, and he craved to know what that meant.
“Perhaps I give you too much credit.” He was smiling, now, and Childe’s breath caught in his throat. That was certainly new. “Maybe you do not listen as much as I thought you do.”
Childe processes just how different Rex Lapis, God of Contracts, and Zhongli, Wangsheng Funeral Consultant, really are.
They coincide at the worst of times, and it does some truly awful things to his heart.
