Summary
Spider-Man was one of several vigilantes in the city, none of them really crossing her radar in all the years she lived there. Unlike Pepper, Michelle refused to engage with that side of her dad’s life at all - secretly terrified of what it could mean for her.
It had played a not insignificant part of why Michelle had rebelled so fiercely growing up, closing her eyes to try and chase the memories of the blur of those years - the anger and resentment that had fueled her for so long.
Michelle wasn’t that person anymore, hadn’t been in years. But as the city passed by, the car getting closer and closer to the Tower, Michelle couldn’t help but wonder what could possibly have been so important to her father today that he put himself in harm’s way.

This can’t be happening, Michelle thinks– hands extended out and balancing precariously on top of a bridge as she looks over at Peter.
“Dude!”
“I’m so sorry,” Peter says, turning back around as he hangs up the call with Ned, Michelle’s hair whipping back and forth. “Are you okay?”
“No, not really,” Michelle answers honestly, Peter glancing down and then over to where someone is calling his name.
There’s cameras, helicopters, people everywhere– Michelle looking around and seeing people staring, grabbing their phones, all pointed at them.
“We should go,” Michelle says, terrified and trying so hard not to be.

It matters in the sense that loving him was still important even if he’s gone now and it matters in the sense that everyone she loves to come will be equally important.
Michelle doesn’t know this, though.
To Michelle there is no before, to Michelle there’s just her life and all of the people worth loving in it.

Oh, now there was the understatement of the century. MJ had crumbled beneath the pressure, shattering the way a glass goblet met a brick floor. She should have known better.
MJ couldn’t do this.

“It’s so—fucking weird, dude.” She’s quiet for a moment. “My dad comes and visits them, apparently. Like, often.”
He hums, non-committal.
She frowns. “What?” she asks, defensive.
“Well, I mean. It kinda makes sense, right?” he says, slowly, like he’s thinking aloud. “He’s still got parenting things to do with your mom and James—”
“James is not my parent,” MJ interjects, but Ned keeps talking.
“And like, he’s gotta do something to work through all the—" she hears a slight rustling on the line, like Ned is waving his hands around expressively, “—and he’s basically only got two ways to do that. Either he talks to your mom, and they deal with it together, or he… ignores it. And he seems like the type to deal with his problems head on, you know. Healthy and honest, or whatever.”
The line is silent for a long moment.
“Subtle, Ned,” MJ says, tartly.

“What’s your name again?” she asks, not because she doesn’t know (she does) but because she needs another moment to puzzle out what sort of response this kid is looking for from her.
“Peter Parker,” he tells her with a smile.
“You’re kinda morbid, Peter Parker,” she deadpans.
His face immediately falls, and Michelle doesn’t need to be good at reading people in order to see the obvious guilt in his eyes. It takes her aback a little bit.
“I’m so sorry, I was just-- I didn’t mean to--”
“It’s refreshing,” she cuts him off before thinking it through, just so he’ll stop spiraling towards a conversation that she’s pretty sure neither one of them want to have. A pity party for grief-stricken children on the floor of a dance studio.

OR: For prima ballerina Michelle Jones-Watson, growing up and learning to dance are inseparable from each other. (So is falling in love. She’ll figure that one out eventually .)

Michelle can’t help it if she feels a little blindsided, having been so involved in creating her own life for herself at ESU that she really hadn’t devoted any amount of time into getting to know the people that would be her new family.
