“Did someone bully you at school?”
Kagami clutched Cheng-san’s shoulders. “N-no,” she mumbled.
“Did you get a bad result?”
“I, I haven’t been registered as a student yet…”
“What made today a bad day, then?” said Cheng-san, oozing kindness and attentiveness. “Would you like to tell me?”
No. No, she wouldn’t. There was no need to tell anyone something so private only the second time she met them, but also Cheng-san’s embrace was so kind, and yes.
“My soulmate,” Kagami said, breathlessly. “I found out I can never have her.”
“Ah,” said Cheng-san. “I should have guessed when I saw the two of you… you met her at fencing, didn’t you?”
Kagami’s blood froze. She pushed herself free from the hug, stared into Sabine’s eyes. “How do you know that?”
There was something about Cheng-san’s expression that felt different from before the hug started. An undertone that made it look like she suddenly hadn’t slept enough. “She is my daughter,” she said.

Kagami closed the book halfway, with her thumb in the place she’d read from to keep the sides apart. She smiled straight at Multimouse.
“I think you’ve been cut apart,” she said. “Like you used to be one person, and now you’re alone. And you need to find your missing half.”
Multimouse merely nodded. She had no idea how to reply.
“It’s different for you, of course. But maybe you were also cut apart in the past, so you’re double-cut…”
“Being cut sounds scary.”
Kagami also nodded. “Being cut apart sounds scarier. But maybe if you find the right other person to be with, it’s less scary.”
“I’m not scared,” said Multimouse.

After Kwamibuster, one of the Multimouse clones gets lost and breaks her leg... only for Kagami to find her, and try to nurse her back to health in her dollhouse.

Summary
Kagami nodded. There were still many things she had left to learn about baking, apparently. Even so, she would learn them so she could leave Marinette in the dust. “Thank you, sensei,” she said, to increase her own politeness score compared to Marinette’s. “I’ll remember this, so I can defeat you.”
“Yes,” said Marinette, going back to her own bowl without showing her full face to Kagami. But her lips did taper downwards at the corners. Kagami shrugged and went back to beating eggs.
It was when she had just started the whisk again that Marinette spoke again. “Hey… Kagami?” she said, almost drowned out by the little motor.
“Yes?” said Kagami, more loudly to prove her superiority in voice control.
“I… um, can you turn that thing off?”

“Erm… hello, everyone!” said Adrienne’s voice. It was a lot gentler than Chloé’s. “I’m… Adrienne Agreste, daughter of Gabriel Agreste. I’ve only been homeschooled before, but this year Nathalie convinced my father to let me go to a normal school.”
The whispering and muttering only increased. But Adrienne either didn’t notice, or she was trying to ignore it.
“I, um… my father is very rich, but I don’t want you guys to treat me any different from how you’d treat anyone else. Okay? I want to just be a normal girl, just the same as any of your other classmates.”
There was a moment where nobody said anything that was audible. Then Alix spoke up to say, “The same as just one very specific classmate, I think.”
And those words were so ominous that Marinette finally dared to look up. And she saw…

“But — I’m Marinette,” Marinette protested.
“And so is she,” said Miss Bustier, nodding towards Lila.
The following “What?” was spoken by at least six people, but of them, Marinette was the loudest. Every head turned to the back again, and Lila met all their questing gazes with a calm, peaceable smile.
“But she’s Lila,” said Marinette, as the only person to speak in the following din. “I’m Marinette.”
“She just changed her name to Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Marinette,” said Bustier. She did hesitate, but she said it nonetheless; it was a joy to hear those words spoken aloud.
But it was time to speak for herself, too. “Yes,” said Lila, keeping her voice bright and airy. “I decided to change my name to honour our class president for all her hard work. She is such a wonderful person, so I wanted to follow in her footsteps in what little way I can.”
