He lifts Liam’s hands and presses them against either side of his own neck to warm them. The brief shock of cold coaxes an involuntary sigh from him. He closes his eyes for moment. There is no movement or sound, save for the muted bustle of the city outside the walls, and the crackle of the stove in the kitchen.
“It seems,” Liam says, hands around Sherlock’s throat tremoring, an emotion his soft voice does not betray. He’s not squeezing hard enough to restrict blood flow, but Sherlock feels the pressure slowly trickle heat into his face. “That atonement does not come so easily to me.”

Sherlock rolls over, his gaze coming to rest on William’s still-sleeping form. The blond is lying on his side, facing Sherlock, and the shirt he wears has slid up enough to reveal a sliver of skin. His eyelashes cast the faintest of shadows over his cheeks, his breath coming and going peacefully through parted lips. A moment’s glance fills Sherlock with affection enough to suffocate; swallowing, he leans forward to press a kiss to William’s hair. Certainly he wouldn’t be so bold if William were awake.

Now he began to worry. Sherlock had been at work that day. Had something happened to him? He quickly put his things down and was about to head for Billy when he heard a strange noise. It came from another part of their apartment.

William’s hand hovered over the doorknob, but he didn’t turn it. Instead, he spoke one last time, his voice low and distant. “The past has nothing to do with the future we should continue moving towards. Perhaps that’s why.”
Something about the emotionless detachment in William’s voice made Sherlock’s blood boil. Or maybe it was the finality of this moment, the goodbye woven in between William’s words.
Sherlock grit his teeth. “Bullshit.”
Sherlock doesn’t let William leave without getting some answers first.
