Summary
Inspired by Demon Dean killing Sam with the First Blade in Atomic Monsters, this fic asks what if Cas was forced to kill Dean to save him from the MOC and he made a similar deal with the Shadow? Dean and Cas both believe they'll never find a moment of true happiness, so making a deal with the Empty is a win for each of them. But intervening canon events make that prospect more difficult with each passing day.
Excerpt
It’s the only way, no matter how desperately his heart wants to resist the cold, suffocating reality of it. Part of Cas wants to scream at the injustice. He wants to turn back time and somehow undo all the choices that led them here.
The road to Cas’ personal Hell was paved with good intentions, but that won’t stop them all from burning in the flames.
40 years in hell and he never turned, but Dean’s only one man. He took on the Mark to save humanity only to lose his own in the process.
If he could, Cas knows Dean would ask him to end this for him. He knows that. So he's going to stop Dean, even if he crushes his own heart in the process. Tonight is the night he kills the monster Dean Winchester has become. -

Summary
Castiel knows many things about Biggerson’s. He knows the original restaurant was a roadside diner opened in 1964. He knows that Biggerson’s is one of a handful of national restaurant chains with a location in all forty-eight continental states. He knows that the fry cook in this particular Biggerson’s is named Rob, and has a nicotine addiction. He knows that his waitress goes by Gerry, even though her full name is Geraldine, and she is angry because his coffee refills and late afternoon pancakes won’t make her as much money as the family of four seated at the next table. He knows Dean’s usual order by heart—the heart attack burger with a coke and a side of fries.
And, most importantly, Castiel knows that all of these things make a Biggerson’s restaurant an excellent place to hide.

After the crushing events of episode 12x10 "Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets", Castiel is low on grace and morale. In an attempt to restore at least one of these two, Sam and Dean take him on a hunt. Things start going wrong when Sam gets injured and Cas seemingly disappears. They get worse when Dean turns from hunter to prey for something feeling far more at home in this dark, rainy forest than he does.
