You're just trying to get home, have a peaceful trip, stay as calm as a troll like you can until you get back to your moirail. All that shit. You didn't expect to make any lasting connections on the train, especially ones that live in your area. You definitely didn't expect to meet anyone quite like Dave Strider. Apparently the universe likes to prove you wrong.
Somehow after that train ride, he fuses himself into your life. Another stubborn fucking barnacle with an uncanny ability to inconvenience you at every possible moment. Even while sleeping. But somehow, despite all the trouble, you still feel like he has the potential to make your life infuriatingly better. And you definitely can't act on it or let him know. Definitely.

“I don’t think anyone is capable of overlooking how much of an asshole you are, rest assured.” Dave begins walking. Karkat follows beside him. “It’s not complicated, man. I just saw this grumpy ass troll going to school in Houston fucking Texas – it was like seeing mothman at the local mall.”
“…. What?”
“You know. Texas. Notorious for being the brightest and hottest fucking oven in the south. It’s not exactly the zion of troll paradise. It is the zion of evangelism, though. Most people don’t give a shit about trolls these days, but if anyone still did they’d definitely live here. Or, like, Kentucky, probably.”
“… What the fuck is mothman?”

AU where troll refugees are sent to Earth to escape the turmoil of a species undergoing social reform. Karkat is one of said refugees and, tragically, that means he has to deal with human high school, which is only marginally better than being killed on his home planet.

Summary
Karkat Vantas has been a fan of indie film duo Dave Strider and Rose Lalonde for years. When he got a chance to work with them, he pounced. After auditioning for the role of the lead detective, in some sort of experimental noir film, he received news of his newfound employment with the film crew of his dreams. On top of that, it turns out many of his friends also managed to land various roles in the film. It's a wonderful start to the career of this bright-eyed, enthusiastic fan-and-actor, but he soon finds himself in some hot water.
Aside from the fact that Dave Strider is nothing like he expected, it turns out that Karkat Vantas' admiration is more akin to a crush. His best friend is sleeping with the assistant director, and his other best friend has refused to take any stance on the matter. That's three train wrecks too many for a man just starting out in acting.
