Summary
At that point the only things that Nie Huaisang was any good at were painting, raising birds and mooning over impossibilities. There was a reason why impossibilities were impossible, he often found himself scolding his own wishes.
Face resting in the cradle of his left palm, Nie Huaisang sighed as he rolled aimlessly the inked brush with his right one. Small black dots bloomed on the sheet of paper placed on the table right in front of him, upon the tree he had been drawing.
Not even in his own thoughts he managed to have a glimmer of hope to hang on to.

“I think I’m allergic to my saber,” Nie Huaisang confessed quietly. The saber in question lay unsheathed at his feet. “I must be. Lately, it’s always like this…” He pressed the cool cup of water to his temple.
If he hadn’t just personally witnessed it, Lan Xichen might have accused Nie Huaisang of slipping back into his childhood habits. He knew how to fake all sorts of injuries and illnesses, after all. But something like this…
“Have you talked to your brother about it?” he asked carefully.
“Have I talked to my brother about a headache that only ever appears during saber practice?”

Lan Xichen is still wearing the ceremonial outfit from the coronation. He looked grand and official from a distance earlier, but now he just looks small, lost among the heavy ornamentation. His face appears calm at first glance, but it’s rigid and unmoving when Nie Huaisang inspects closer. He doesn’t say anything either, doesn’t explain why he’s here. He just stares around at Nie Huaisang’s things, not seeming to take any of it in.
“Xichen-ge,” Nie Huaisang asks. “Is everything OK?”

It was no wonder then that when a cultivation conference was to be held in Cloud Recesses, little Nie Huaisang, age seven, was allowed to join the party right after telling his father that he would have loved to see the clouds.
