A noise begins to bubble up around her, an indescribable, comfortable grating sound, like a church choir full of heavy smokers, or the collective yowls of hundreds of stray cats, or a thunderstorm inverting itself upwards and crashing lightning into space. Static, but abundant. It gradually becomes more and more intelligible---or perhaps she's just getting used to it--before it fully mangles itself into a coherent voice and talks to her.
"You... pilot this vessel... alone?" her hands say.
"Yes, I---I---I'm the captain."

Things are different after what happened on the island. Alan's nights are interrupted, too often, by bad dreams; he knows it's the same for Ellie and Ian. He knows it's even worse, in many ways, for Ian, because of his injuries - which were Alan's fault. If he'd warned him to stay in the car; Ian might not have been hurt. There's nothing he can do to change the past - but perhaps there's something he can do to help in the present.
Ellie, too, blames herself for what happened; if she knew more about medical treatments, his leg might have healed without complications. She, too, wants to help - and she has an idea of something she and Alan can do to help.
Ian, meanwhile, is spending most of his time waiting - for someone to bring him morphine, for his leg to stop hurting, for the dinosaurs to show up at the hospital. Almost every day, Ellie and Alan visit and distract him from less pleasant thoughts - but what will happen when they have to go back to their dig - and start working with dinosaurs again? That's the last thing Ian would want to do; he hopes it won't be so bad for them. But perhaps there's something he can do to help them, as they've been helping him. Not the same kind of help, but something he can do. -
