Sam eyed the bedside clock. It was pushing six. On a normal morning they’d be up and on their run by now. Well, Steve would be back from his already. But it wasn’t a normal morning. And it was Sunday.

Summary
A solid body sank down onto the bench beside him but Steve doesn’t bother looking up at the moment. He knew it was Sam. Somehow, he was always very aware of the man’s presence. And not only because he had learned to recognize the sound of his gait. Just like he knew without looking that Sam wasn’t really looking at him either. They just sat quietly side-by-side on the bench, facing the crashing waves and the setting sun. It was comfortable. Peaceful even.

Summary
He needed a break from thinking about anything to do with leads, Hydra, fighting and deadends before his brain started melting. Steve needed a break too but it was easier to pull teeth than it was to talk him into taking a night off. That was okay though. Sam had a feeling it wouldn’t be long before the empty stool beside him was filled with a big, bulky blonde. The thought alone made him grin.

Summary
Music was playing over the speakers that Clint had given him a couple of weeks ago. They’re nice speakers. Small enough that they could be set up virtually anywhere in the house without being in the way. They’re standalone, which Steve found fascinating in a way that seemed to amuse Sam to no end. But then Sam seemed to enjoy seeing Steve’s reactions to some of the new and fascinating aspects of the 21st century. The best part about the little speakers though was that, despite their size, they could get very loud.

It stopped being typical, however, when he distractedly walked directly into a very solid wall. A wall that should not be in the middle of a train. He only belatedly realized that the wall was, in fact, a person, when strong hands caught him around the upper arms to keep him from hitting the floor.

They’d go hunting down a lead. Sometimes it was a good one where they could actually do Hydra some damage, but most often bad ones where they chased air. Steve would avoid looking or speaking to him for awhile. Until they got back to where ever they happened to be crashing for the duration. Then Steve would ask to draw him, all hesitant and tentative. Not every time. Not even most Ops ended that way. But frequent enough for a pattern to form.

Luck was on their side that much of their Hydra-Hunting was road time and recon. Which meant that Steve had more time to level out before heading into an assault that would send his hormone levels into disarray. It didn’t happen with every strike they ran, Steve dropping like this. Sam was even relieved to say it didn’t happen with most of them. But still far too frequently than he was remotely comfortable with.

It was obvious from his expression that Tony thought that Steve would back down. Bucky supposed considering the fairly conservative front that Steve tended to put up, more of a defensive measure than anything he was sure, that Tony’s assumption might be logical. Wrong.
