“I’m just wrapping up something at the lab and then I’ll be on my way,” Bucky had said. “I can’t wait to see you.”
He had sounded a little tired, maybe, but even through the phone, Steve could tell Bucky was smiling one of crooked, sappy smiles, the kind that would send Steve’s heart into fits like he was a ninety-pound asthmatic once again. Especially when Bucky told him how much he was looking forward to their first weekend off together in months.
“I can’t wait to see you either, Buck. I love you.”
“I love you too, Stevie. See you soon.”
And that’s it. No calls, no texts, nothing for over two hours. Which is a problem, because Bucky is never late, and he never fails to call or text back.
Something is very, very wrong.-or- Bucky goes missing, and Steve will stop at nothing to get him back.

Summary
The last thing he remembers is being surrounded by Hydra agents. Steve had taken a hard hit and was down, and Bucky was struggling to get to him. Tunnel vision—Bucky had never even noticed the handler until he was right in front of him, shooting Bucky point blank with a tranquilizer gun.
Bucky groans again, moving his tongue around his mouth and grimacing at the bitter chemical aftertaste he remembers all too well. They used the same tranqs they used to use on him when he was the Winter Soldier, specially formulated for his boosted metabolism. Still, something feels a little off, a persistent feeling of weakness, more than the usual sedative hangover he was used to.

Summary
It’s astounding how quickly he’s become lost. Bucky shoulders his way through the barn door, slamming it shut behind him and sinking gratefully back against the worn planks. It’s marginally warmer here, out of the driving snow, but not by much. Bucky shivers violently, whether from cold or blood loss he isn’t sure, but he knows one thing—he needs to build a fire, fast.
-or- Lost and wounded in a snowstorm, Bucky must stay alive long enough for Steve and the Howling Commandos to find him.

Summary
Bucky waits for Tony to come back on the line, but there’s just silence. “Tony? You cut out there for a second, can you repeat that?”
“…arnes? Do y…ead me?”
“Tony?”
“B…” The rest dissolves into static.
“Tony, come in—”
The lights abruptly go out. Somewhere deep inside him, Bucky knows the emergency power just failed, but that still doesn’t stop him from frantically calling out to Tony and Nat over the comms for nearly ten full minutes before hanging up the mic and sliding down the bulkhead in shocked defeat.
They’re completely cut off. From the world, from help, from…from anything. They’re completely on their own, and time is running out.

Summary
Hands are tearing at the restraints across his legs, his waist. His chest. Bucky waits for them to tear into him as well, releasing him from this hell and delivering him to that final oblivion, but instead they pause, resting gently on his shoulders.
They’re so warm.
A face swims into view, the face of an angel. One he thought he’d never see again, one that surely couldn’t be real. Not where he is.
Still, he asks the question. “Is…is that…”
“It’s me.” His golden-haired savior is breathless, looking at him like he’s seen a ghost. “It’s Steve.”-or-Steve and Bucky escape from the Kreischberg Munitions factory

Summary
Bucky’s just staring at him in that closed-off way again, the one that gives Steve no clue as to what’s going on in his head. He seems to be waiting for something.
Steve decides to push, just a little bit.
He picks up a washcloth and kneels next to the tub. Bucky swallows thickly, but he doesn’t flinch this time. He dips it into the water, and raises it to Bucky’s chest, close but not touching. “Is it…is this okay?”
Bucky nods faintly. He’s trembling again. His eyes flutter shut as the cloth touches his skin and he exhales shakily, but he doesn’t pull away.-or- Steve cares for Bucky after the Helicarrier.

Summary
Bucky is standing there in the doorway. Leaning in the doorway. Against it, as if he barely has the strength to remain on his feet. Steve can’t see Bucky’s eyes, but he can see his shoulders heaving with labored breaths. He’s dressed in sodden jeans and a hoodie, his hair plastered to his face and neck. He’s shivering.
“B-Buck?”
“Stevie?” Bucky lifts his head, and Steve can see that his pupils are dilated, even in the light from the porch. He’s so pale. “I-I’m sorry. I don’t…I didn’t know where else to go.”
In two steps Steve is there next to him, but when he goes to pull Bucky’s arm over his shoulder, the brunette flinches away.
“Okay, okay.” Holding his hands up like he’s trying to calm a spooked horse, Steve steps aside. “Let’s just get you inside and out of that rain, okay?”-or- After the Helicarrier, Bucky shows up at Steve's house in need of help.

Summary
The Soldier cries out in rage. Not fear. Never fear, not in those dead eyes that stare blankly back at Steve. Eyes that are precisely the same color as Bucky’s, the same stormy blue that used to twinkle with mischief and melt Steve into a puddle, now cold and lifeless.
Dead eyes in his dead lover’s face.
Steve hardens his heart and twists his arm, throwing the Soldier to the ground and pulling the man’s right arm back at an impossible angle. Pulling the limb towards him and feeling the bone give against the socket as he bears down with all his weight. The Soldier struggles, but Steve is just too strong, the leverage too great.
“Drop it!” he shouts, even as the Soldier tries to swipe at him. “Drop it!”
Please don’t make me do this. Please don’t make me hurt you.-or-Steve's train of thought as he is forced to choke out Bucky on the Helicarrier

“Five minutes, Barnes!” The trainer hammers on the door.
Bucky grabs his gloves off the table. “Here—help me into these things.”
“Buck, you can’t be serious. Look at that guy.”
“It’s a mis-match. Draws the crowd.”
“You’re gonna get hurt. Bucky, he—that guy could kill you.”
“Hey.” Bucky cups Steve’s face, tilting his head up to meet his eyes. “I know you don’t want me doin’ this, but it’s the last one. I swear. Ask the fellas if you don’t believe me, I already told Eddie.”
“Then why...”
Steve's voice dies when he sees Bucky’s face. There's guilt there--yes, there's plenty of that--but there's an equal amount of determination as well. It’s a look that Steve would’ve recognized from the mirror, only it was one that was usually on his own face, instead of Bucky’s. Right before he went and did something stupid.-or- Bucky takes in one last fight

Summary
Bucky paces by the window. He’s going to kill Steve.
The little punk got into a fight again, he just knows it. It’s eight o’clock on a Friday night, Steve’s shift at the grocer ended hours ago, the temperature is plummeting, and Bucky is about two seconds from having a heart attack because Steve is still out there somewhere, probably bleeding in an alley instead of safe and warm at home with Bucky.
That jerk. That stupid, righteous asshole.-or- Bucky patches Steve up after another fight.
